Beware

3

We have had Citizen's Homeowners insurance for about 2 years now and up until recently thought we had made a great choice. However I guess we should have read the fine print a little closer. We recently had our home broken into and the thieves made off with approximately $15,000 in personal property ranging from tools to antiques. They broke a window and our front door. We were just glad that no one was home and that the stolen items could be replaced and the damage repaired. So I began the process to file a claim. I took out my policy to see what the value was for our personal property to be replaced but I am definately not the insurance knowledgeable type person so I decided to just call our agent and let her help me with the process. That is when I found out much to my surprise that their policy does not cover theft. She did tell me that it would cover the damage which was covered under mischief but it would be cheaper for us to fix it ourselves than to pay for the deductible. I would definately be aware of what your policy will cover before you make your final decision to purchase homeowners insurance from Citizen or you could find yourself in the same position we did.

Citizens: Unfortunately the only option in Florida

1

I've been with Citizens insurance for over ten years because every other insurer pulled out of Florida and Citizens has to take everyone so it's my only choice. I've never had a claim, but I am now facing a mold issue. My policy covers up to $10,000 for mold removal but only if caught early. In Florida it is impossible to catch a mold problem early. I only found out about it when I had a leaking pipe fixed in my bathroom shower. Citizens won't cover it because they say I didn't catch it early enough. I don't have the money to fix it so I dumped a bunch of bleach down into the shower wall and sealed it all back up. If that isn't bad enough, Citizens was turned down by the state for a raise in premiums. So they hired a bunch of "contractors" to inspect our homes for wind mitigation. Even though my front door is clearly a hurricane door, because it no longer has the sticker on it saying so, Citizens won't count it. They also denied all my other wind deductions because they weren't marked as such. It raised my premium by 40%. Although the front door is clearly a hurricane door, the sticker could have fallen off, it could have been painted over, or both. It does not make it any less a hurricane door! If Citizens is not going to cover any damages that are clearly stated in my policy, I might as well drop my homeowner's insurance. Why pay $3,000+/yr when they aren't going to cover anything anyway? If I put that money into a fund, it would likely pay for anything I needed fixed barring hurricane damage. Unfortunately, those are my only choices right now.

I have been with Citizens for about 20 plus years and have been in good hands with them. My rates have always been fair and the best rates available, whether I've had one or multiple vehicles. I also have my home owners insurance through them with the same fair and good rates. My experience with filing claims has always been simple and handled in a timely manner and felt my settlements with them over the several years to be fair and honest. My agent is always a phone call or email away and my questions or inquiries are always addressed and/or answered within 24 hours or better. I've had excellent customer service over the 20 plus years and i really don't bother to shop around anymore because I always end up finding the deal I'm getting with Citizens is the best for me. I would recommend to anyone to check your rates against Citizens. They offer good discounts and I have found them to be the best out there.

Very Happy with Citizens Insurance Company

I have held Citizens Car insurance for years now, and more recently, have had their home owners insurance for the last year since we purchased the home we are in now. I have found, even after checking around, that they have the best rates. We cover two cars for both me and my husband and our home. After comparing rates and checking with family and friends, I am convinced that our agent got us the best rate possible. In addition, earlier this year we had water and sewer damage in our basement from a storm. I was very concerned as I have never had to file an insurance claim before. They were extremely helpful and prompt; an appraiser was at my house the next day and we had his report the following day. We got our insurance money right away and was so pleased with the service.

We have had Citizens Insurance for about 10 years. Our home and cars are insured through them. We have always been fairly lucky as far as claims go. Over the years we have never had to file a homeowners claim but there have been two fender benders and one very recent total loss to our automobile. I was driving on a remote expressway and hit a deer, or the deer hit me lol. I lost control of the vehicle and veered off of the road. The car was a total loss. I contacted Citizens, they looked at the vehicle (this was 100's of miles from my home) and had an answer for me within two days. The were very generous in the amount of money we were given. I had no problems filing the claim by phone, I had an answer quickly and I received payment quickly. They made it clear that I had the the oportunity to ask any questions or dispute the amount of money they were offering. They were generous and i was happy. They will continue to be my insurance company for many years to come.

Citizens, the last resort insurance company.

Citizen Insurance, you either love them, or hate them. Well I really hated them at one time, because our condo association, and Len is on the board, not only put our condo fees up, but assessed us $100 to cover the Citizens increase. That really hurt some of the people where we live, and the association allowed them to pay it over a 6 month period, along with the regular fees. Since then Citizens are still our insurance company, and they have only been putting the premium up, about the same as other companies. So now I have no complaints with them. However, I am very concerned that if we get a major disaster in the area, they will do it again. I am thankful that we have insurance for our townhouse, and hope that they continue to service our condo association. Customer Service My husband had dealings with them as he is on the board of directors. Available Plans They have one for condo associations.

I've always had good response from my agent and from the adjustors Citizens sends out.  Ditto with their company representative that I have to call to file a claim.  The adjustor responds very quickly and I've always thought they were very fair in their assessment of my claim.  I have had two claims on my homeowners policy (wind blew down my fence and I had a crack in my pool line) and 4 claims on my auto policy.  They even reopened a claim that I had once I got additional infomation regarding the cause of the damage to my pool.  With my auto insurance, they respond quickly and take care of everything with the body shop so it's no hassle to me (I have hit 3 deer in the past 5 years and they have covered all the damage).  Now, even with all of this, they are far and away the lowest priced insurance I have found (sorry Progressive, Geico, State Farm, Allstate and others!).  And though I have a clean driving record now, when they first picked me up I had multiple speeding tickets.

We currently carrying Citizens Auto Insurance for our 3 vehicles.  We recently had a payoff for one for one of the vehicles, and were owed money from the policy as we pay 6 months at a time.  It took over 6 weeks before we got our money.  I contacted the agent several times, and the check was sent and then sent back twice, for whatever reason.  If we waited that long to pay our bill, we would hear from them everyday.

they suck in claims

I recenly had to file a claim with Citizens, It has taken me almost 2 weeks to just file the claim. I can never seem to get ahold of the claims adjuster. I leave her a message and she will contact me 24-48 hrs later. As soon as my claim is settled I will be moving my insurance to a compay with a better AM rating.  I will never go back to Citizens again.   ON top of that.  The captive agent that I go though wouldn't take care of my claim.  They made me do all the work. I thought that they get paid money to take care of that for me? Every time I try to contact that company I get a voice mail recording.  I don't think that I will stay with either company.   As for my claim. I wanted to have this taken care of quickly.  I work in an insurance agency and all the companies that I work and write for has a quick turn around tiem for their claims. I work for an agency that wont consider writing insurance for Citizens considering they are part of the AM Best rating of a B to a B-.  I can't belive it is going on two weeks and no one wil figure this out for me.  Thanks for the help guys...NOT
