Blue Cross / Blue Shield Review Summary

Health insurance is a must for most families and individuals and Blue Cross/Blue Shield ranks among the most popular health insurance providers in the United States. Reviews of Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, however, are varied and there is an almost equal number of positive and negative points ranging from comments like “The Best Medical Insurance Company Around” to “A Lot of Problems”. Blue Cross/Blue Shield has one positive quality that most can agree: It is a widely accepted health insurance provider, and this is an important consideration for anyone who has health concerns. But on the negative side, Blue Cross/Blue Shield offers weak customer service and inefficient claims processing. Blue Cross/Blue Shield is a very large health insurance operation, but consumers should consider other Insurance Companies before making a final decision.

To those that are in a tough spot with health care; blue cross has been an excellent provider for the cost.  My company recently switched from offering Kaiser, to only offering Blue Cross.  At first I thought this was horrible because my family had a good standing with the Kaiser… read full review »

I have had Blue Cross for years, but never really got sick. Well, this year I have been to many doctors and multiple claims have been a nightmare. My provider was told x-rays would be covered at 60% and then they covered nothing saying the x-rays were taken on an office visit and their limit for a… read full review »

I have had Blue Cross less than a year, however I was pregnant when my husband got the coverage. I went through a pregnancy with all the doctor visits, a c-section, and being re-admitted for CHF and I paid $300 of a $30,000 hospital bill!  That is it!  It is cheaper for family coverage than the insurance my employer offers. Also, while I was off on maternity leave, they called ever couple of weeks to see if I needed anything.  They really made me feel like they cared about ME not our money!  They have a nurse line available 24 hours a day and sent me information on it so I… read full review »

I have gone alomst through all isurances but was always recomended to look for Blue Cross programs, i am a mother and a wife who has like everyone elses extremly strick bugets that can only sonetines go as far as feeding my family.Blue Cross though talks much about programs and plans for families like ours who make a little more than the requirements for help but when the time comes to the actual aid i am very dissappointed to find out how truly expensive they really are.I mean they were my last hope. They also make putting in an application extremly comlicated and you dont hear from anyone… read full review »

Blue Cross/Blue Shield seems to be a really nice insurance company.  Once you start to go to the doctor for illnesses or anything else, they seem to not want to pay what they should.  They have too many conditions on everything.  Prior illnesses have a waiting period that can be up to two years long.  I guess that it is called pre-existing conditons. What happens if someone is bi-polar and really needs to the medication?  How can they make someone wait just because it was there before?  It is not right!!  Some people can't go without going to the doctor and… read full review »

This si one insurance company that I have worked for as well as had their policy from several other employeers. Overall they do often a very large universal network practically including every health care provider known to man kind. They do however have a unique way in establishing policy and often more than not they are made to solely benefit the company. Not to often are acceptions made and even if you would like ot make one it takes jumpting through hoops or knowing someone. The companies structure is often very who you know even in regard to employment and advancement. They put on a… read full review »

In April 2007, the company I work for switched to Blue Cross/Blue Shield for medical insurance. I was skeptical of medical insurance companies as a whole due to less than productive experiences with the company we were using at the time. However, a couple of weeks after signing up with BCBS, my husband had a major medical emergency. The customer service representatives for BCBS were very helpful when the claims began rolling in. They took their time answering my questions and helped straighten out billing errors. To date, my experiences with BCBS have been very positive, and I would highly… read full review »

I have had better insurance strait from blue cross.  But since this is the closest that I can get through Fed ins its great for my husband and son.  The only problem with the insurance and the main reason we wanted it was for my back.  I need a breast reducton and cannot get the procedure because of the claims saying that they refuse to pay for cosmetic issues...though my doctor has explained to them numerous times that this is not cosmetic...it is medically necessary.  Now I will have to put out over 10000 dollars if I want to get better.… read full review »

Blue Cross Blue Shield is a great insurance company. You have the freedom to choose the doctors, hospitals, labs, etc of your choice. You are not limited to certain doctors, do not need referrals, and coverage is country wide. This is especially helpful if you travel alot or have children away at school. Blue Cross is also widely recognized. Some insurance companies are obscure and doctors offices and hospitals have to look up if you are covered. I have been covered by Blue Cross for over 6 years and I would not… read full review »

I have dealt with B/C & B/S through my place of work. I have to get prior authorization for medications and procedures. These approvals waste time for the patient and the physicians. Most of the time it is the patient who pays as they either have to wait for an approval from the insurance review team, do a different procedure that the review team feels is adequate or try medications that they feel is the best choice. This takes away from the doctors expertise. Thanks for listening, jillern57@yahoo.com… read full review »

My husband has Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance but I am typically the one who makes all the appointments and phone calls. The customer service is excellent! I often call to see what doctors are available in my area or even to see which doctor it is that he needs and they are so helpful and courteous. In anything that I have ever had a question on, they have never made me feel like it was a dumb question. Have never had problems with claims and for the services you receive, the cost is… read full review »

This company is bad and the people that work for them are bad.  My family and I all had blue cross and they always find a way not to pay the claim.  —   I feel this is  a waste of money.  The company is not about service it is about taking your money.  I had a sore throat and they would not pay because I told the doctor that it has hurt on and off on a mild basis for around a year so the company denied the claim and the hospital is now billing me. — … read full review »

Blue shield has come up with one loophole after another not to cover things covered in our plan. When I call even the customer service reps can't figure out why things aren't being covered and have to hunt for close to an hour and talk to two other people to figure out why things that have been previously covered are now suddenly not covered. Buyer beware they will constantly raise your premiums and make you fight tooth and nail for coverage especially if you require a lot of prescription medications.… read full review »

When doctors prescribes a particular drug, who are insurance companies to accept or deny the doctors advice?  "This will work almost as well and it's much cheaper."  More importantly; who the hell are insurance companies to tell patients when they should go home from the hospital, and what procedures they are allowed.  — Personal opinion: Insurance personell are rejects from medical school. — And that's the way it is.... —… read full review »
