Never be lost again

4

We have been using this GPS for about a year now and it hasn't steered us wrong yet. The screen is big enough to see when driving without affecting your driving. The screen shows what the lane and signs will look like, which is great for me, I'm a very visual person. The voice, we call her Betty, uses street names a big plus. I am much more confident going to strange cities with this by my side, I know that if I'm forced to exit. cause I got into one of those exit only lanes, Betty will be able to get me back on track. We just recently had to purchase a new charger cable, the old one broke at the jack, probably our fault since we do not use the mount.

Very useful

I've used this GPS many times and love it. It's very simple to use and has saved me many times. I've used other GPS devices before but never owned one so I've never gotten very familiar with other devices. My favorite things about the Road Mate 1470 are the easy to use touch screen and the simple navigation through the menus. It has easy to understand titles like "go to" or "points of interest" My husband, on the other hand, has tried to use this many times and cannot navigate the menus at all. My three main complaints: 1. Horrible signal in certain cities. I've mainly used this in Ohio and Pennsylvania and the reception in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Erie and everywhere in between was great. Philadelphia was bad. Pittsburgh was even worse. Once I hit the city there was no signal to be found anywhere. Defeats the purpose. In NYC, it actually worked really well but there would be a few moments when it would lose us. Coming out of Lincoln Tunnel it took nearly 2 minutes to regain signal which is forever when you need to know immediately. Suggestion: write down the turn-by-turn directions! 2. The audio is useless. It's perfectly clear until they pronounce street names. US or state highways with road names as well as numbers become a minute-long jumble of noise. It's best to rely on reading the screen. 3. This GPS will not take no for an answer when it comes to toll roads. There is a turnpike near my house and as a result, I can't use my home address. I have to use a nearby city to get directions home. Aggravating, but what is more aggravating is that when I finally get the GPS to skip the turnpike, it takes me an hour out of the way on a country road and THEN takes me back to the same turnpike. The GPS works great, just don't rely on it anywhere with a lot of tunnels. And be ready for all the tolls!

Love my GPS

I first got the 1420 model but later switched to the 1470.  I love the ease of use of this GPS and it's great to have thousands of Points of Interest (gas stations, stores, government buildings, etc) on hand.  I saw my friend using her Tom Tom and she kept having to wait for a satellite connection in order to get positioning and route planning.  Not as much hassle with the Magellan.  It gives lots of route options as well as easy to change/add/delete detours.  The only thing I find a bit annoying is the Lane Assist, I'm used to the typical arrows in each lane showing which lanes exit or not.  However, the Magellan uses a freeway sign looking symbol with arrows on them showing how many lanes go straight and a separate freeway sign looking symbol with arrows showing how many lanes exit.  Aside from that I love this GPS.  The One Touch is handy and my friend (same one with the Tom Tom) was amazed that my GPS stayed stuck to the dash mount, hers kept falling off so she has to stick hers to the window.

excellent GPS that helps you in the strangest of places

We were given this GPS as a gift after our Tom Tom was stolen when our car was broken into. I was disappointed (a little) because I was used to the Tom Tom. But the Magellan soon changed my mind. It had a bigger screen, better details of the street maps, a nicer sounding voice for the trip directions and was easier to use,  Entering a location was easy and helped fill in street and city names at the touch of a few letters.  When we were travelling to a location way off the beaten path in the desert, I didnt think that it would be able to give us directions but it did. Not only did it direct us correctly, but it gave us warnings ahead of time when to turn off the highway, when to turn left, and what side of the "street" our destination was on.  As we are a bit older, the larger fonts also help and easy to touch on the screen. The windshield holder attaches itself securely and doesn't slip.  Even off roading doesn't detach the GPS from the windshield.  The Magellan 1470 is a gem!

Perfect, portable GPS system for average traveler

5

We're an older couple and the Magellan Road Mate 1470 is the perfect GPS system for us.  It has a 4.5" screen and the voice directions are modulated and not ear-piercing.  We are also taken with the ability to instantly adhere the system to our windshield and just as quickly remove it for security purposes.  This is not a cheaper system nor is it the most expensive out there but it is well worth the price.  This Road Mate has so many features, many we haven't even discovered yet.  It is extremely easy to program and will calculate different routes to/from your destination, just in case you want to take the scenic route rather than the shortest distance.  We waited a long time to buy a GPS system but we're travelling more to other states now and we felt we needed to get something that would get us to our destinations without our having to use step-by-step maps.  We are extremely pleased with this purchase and our son (the one who can't find his way out of a paper bag!) is now buying one as well!
