Our reviewers have mixed reviews for the Dollar Rent-a-Car service. Some found the cars to be very "budget-conscious" and that they had "cheap daily rates (cheaper than competitors)". Others were not as please with the Dollar rentals, as some of the reserved cars were not in stock, the customer service was a little rocky, and "requests were not granted." The price point is what attracted the most renters, finding that Dollar car rental often had really good deals where the car would also come with unlimited miles. Bottom-Line: For the price, I would reluctantly do business with Dollar again; I am unwilling to let just one experience sour me to the entire company.
I traveled back east a few months ago and chose Dollar Rent-a-Car to rent my car from because it fit my rather tight criteria. However, my experience with Dollar Rent-a-Car was a mixed bag. On one hand the car I eventually rented for two days was what I wanted: a clear, powerful, but reasonably fuel efficient car that was fun the drive. But getting the car I wanted took some doing.

Dollar has never been my first choice in car rental companies, but I'd be a fool not to consider them when scouting out car rentals because every now and then, they really do save me money. Not every trip. Not every market. Not every car class. But their web site is very good about highlighting their specials, and if you're able to take advantage of them, they often are really good deals.
In most of the U.S. destinations I've visted recently, it's been either Enterprise or Thrifty who usually save me the most money. Not always though. On one trip into Minneapolis, it would have ended up costing...

Planning our vacation and looking at rental car options, when the option for a Dodge Charger came up at Dollar Rent A Car, we chose this for a couple of reasons. One was because the price was good for the full size car we were needing as a family of four, and the other was that as a car lover, my husband really wanted the Charger. And it wasn't just him. My son couldn't wait to feast his eyes on it either. I've rented from Dollar Rent a Car many times, mainly because they are WAY cheaper than other rental agencies. I suppose it is true that you get what you pay for...and you need to be on your game when dealing with the agents sometimes.
There is no rhyme or reason to the car you're going to get. It's a crapshoot, so don't go in there with your heart set on a particular car, because you probably won't get it.
After several uneventful rentals with Dollar, I recently rented a mid-sized vehicle for a long weekend trip to Tennessee. The reservation indicated a "Chrysler Sebring or similar". ...

If you value your time, I strongly suggest you do not use Dollar car rental, at least in San Diego. When we showed up, they were serving people who had been waiting in line for 2 hours. Everyone already had a reservation, and was just trying to pick up a car. It took us 1 ½ hours to get to the counter. When we returned our car, we talked to people in the line, and they had been waiting over an hour. You can walk to other car rental places, and their wait time was about 10 minutes. The others were out of cars. Part of the delay is that people kept coming back because the trouble...

Poor and not to rely on
I am from Copenhagen Denmark, and has rented the car in the Las Vegas airport from 9 June 2009 to 24 June 2009
But when we retrieved the car, I was charged 128 dollars for road safe with the message that it was not included in the rental, it was a big lie and I then contacted U.S. dollars rent a car which will not pay that amount back, so I would recommend that rent from the major car leasing companies that I have never been cheated of.
I would add that the car was defective, could not switch off air conditioning and cruise control did not work

For a 3 weeks trip through California and Nevada in a party of 4 persons we rent a dollar car already before the start from Germany. We wanted to take over a 4WD jeep in San Franciso downtown - ok, it was not that we wnted but similar, and not ok: we had to wait in a row for more than one hour, at times only one of four ppl behind the counter. My friends and I rented 2 cars from DOLLAR in Panama, February 2008 (a van and additional car -- the Dollar van was big enough for our party but not our luggage so we rented the additional car for the day). We had an arrangment with the Dollar rental agent that for $25 a Dollar employee would come and pick up the car. Just when I thought I could save a couple of bucks. It back-fired. Worse rental car experience ever. I should have googled reviews about them before renting.
Dollar Car Rental in San Diego on Pacific Highway. Yep, it's the only there, right by the airport.
Waited over 2 hours in line in to get to the counter. The agent told me that it was not typical. Well, when I returned the car I saw a long line.

Dollar charged me an early return fee of $15 because I brought the car back 3 hours before the due date on the contract. There is no possible cost to Dollar that would justify the fee. I'm sure they had the car back on the road within the hour!
The rental office at the Denver airport is also understaffed ( I waited over 30 minutes to get to a rep) and then they told me that no car of the class I had rented was available and made me wait an additional 30 minutes for one to "become available."
