Dangerous product, - poor customer service!!!

1

After 4 yrs of operations this unit started to trigger the GFI every 10 min.... I tested & replaced the GFI, the unit continued to trigger the GFI. I plugged it into a non-GFI box and blew my circuit breaker. Basically the unit started to short out... the noise and smell should have convinced me! *LOL* I assumed that these days of disposable appliances that it was time to purchase a new one, which I did. Fast forward 3 weeks, Frigidaire announces a recall of "limited" units. Fortunately, I still have the old unit in my garage (waiting for to be taken to the dump). I call Frigidaire with the required information, and they tell me that my "serial" number is NOT part of the recall... even though I have operational proof that this appliance is not only faulty, but dangerous! I eagerly offered to ship it back to them so they can learn and be "pro-active" with their dangerous products... but they told me "we have had no complaints on that particular serial number... that I know about". "that they know about"... Unfortunately, this is typical of poor customer 'no service'... in reality, the design, parts sourcing, failure rate are all similar... the recall should cover every serial number assembled of a particular design... ESPECIALLY when you have a customer with a faulty unit. BUT, Frigidaire/Electrolux isn't willing to stand by their faulty product. Frigidaire/Electrolux may have some great products, but because of their poor defensive reactionary incomplete time wasting customer service... I will NEVER buy any product they are associated with. Works OK, hard to empty, controls not intuitive

The Frigidaire FDL50S1 does what it's supposed to do, but getting the bin out of the machine is a major challenge that requires strength and dexterity to get rid of the water.  SInce I can't find the instruction manual for this thing, I am just running it hit or miss, the method of setting the humidity level is not intuitive, so I'm just guessing as to how to get it to operate properly.

Makes a big difference in our home

We purchased this dehumidifier to assist in pulling the moisture out of the indoor air.  Living in Florida, the humidity is so high that it causes the home to feel hot even when the thermostat tells me otherwise. I am very pleased with the results of using this product.  The air is drier and it definitely feels cooler.  It has 50 pint capacity and two fan speeds.  The dimensions are 15" wide by 13" deep and 23-1/2" high. I don't know much about dehumidifiers, but this one works like a charm and I am very pleased with it.  I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a name brand manufacturer, and the price was low enough to entice me to purchase.

Faulty Controls?? Or Not Very Efficient!!!

1

I've gone thru THREE of these new units (Fridgidaire FDL50)  in the past month.  My units (all of them) turn on and run for 30 seconds to 3 minutes (after the humidity was reduced to the set point..45%). From that point on, I could here it turn on and run for a minute or so.. turn off for 3-5 minutes, turn back on for 20 seconds, turn off..  The same thing happening over and over.  I took the first unit back to the store and received a new one..  It did the exact same thing, so replaced again after talking to Fridgidaire.  The THIRD one is now doing the same thing.  Either there's a bad batch of them, or they are incredibly inefficient!! If you buy one, be sure to monitor what it's doing after a few days when the humidy is stabilized in your basement.  And another BIG negative is that they are NOT repairable. I found this out after talking with Fridgidaire. "The are too expensive to repair, so we just replace them"..  Wow.. Talk about NOT a GREEN company!!!   What a waste of new units!! Landfills, lookout.. I'm taking my money and running.. Additionally, it seems no matter what review one looks at, most brands of dehumidiers are NOT built to last.  It seems the newer ones last only 2-3 years..  :(

Frigidaire FDL50S1 - Very good dehumidifier

5

Frigidaire FDL50S1 really made a difference in our basement. True, it is not  quietest of all dehumidifiers out there but the noise does not bother me that much. What does matter is that it removes a lot of moisture and it is doing it fast. On our firs day of operation it filled the bucket (2.12 gallon) in 3 hours in 80% humidity at 75F The controls are very well designed and easy to use. The unit is also capable of maintin specific humidity level which is a plus.  The humidity sensor is very accurate. The unit is diplaying very similar humidity level to my analog unit with a margin of difference of 5 which is the actual increment the unit is designed to show As long as it will operate correctly it is a very good dehumidifier.

Surprisingly effective workhorse - running for 2 months straight

We bought the Frigidaire FDL50S1 dehumidifier after our sump pump failed and brought in 3 inches of water into the basement. My woodshop occupies the basement, so I had to get it dried pretty quick. We picked this unit based on the amount of airflow it could push, the digital controls, and the option to connect a hose pipe to expel water directly into a drain. The unit worked great right out of the box - no disappointments or regrets. Initially I had to empty the bucket every 2-3 days, and after a month I was down to emptying it once a week. The controls are not only intuitive, but simple and clear. The bucket holds quite a bit of water, and the attached float switch shuts down the unit at the right level, to allow you to remove the bucket and take it upstairs without sloshing out onto the floor. I haven't used the hose connection yet, although I'm about to. The airflow is considerable - I use it at the high setting for maximum effect. Incidentally, the "noise" that other reviewers complain about is directly proportional to the amount of air flow. The lower setting reduces the noise. I should point out a couple of the subtler features: - The unit warms the outgoing air, so that you don't end up with a cold room. - The bucket has a shield on top, which minimizes water from sloshing around while transporting it. - Any leakage from the hose connection, (if imperfectly connected), drips into the bucket, which in turn will stop the unit once it's full anyway. - The unit is Energy Star certified.   All told, I'm glad I bought this unit over the others.

Turns off even when it is not full

1

I also own the Frigidare Dehumidifier FLD50S1 and to be honest it is awful.  The thing shuts off even when it is not full and  I am quite frequently emptying it.  Our basement stays moist almost all the time and this just does not dry it up not even a little. The cost was in the middle of the price range as I did not want to buy the cheapest nor could I afford the most expensive.  The air filter fills quickly and is hard to clean and expensive to replace, so I wash it off with the garden hose in the summer and in the shower in the winter. It is raining right now in Ohio and I went down to check just before rating this and as usual it was not on and the basement felt damp. I emptied the half full tank and I had to jiggle it around in it's compartment to get it to turn on. The only good thing I can say about it is that it is white in color.  If I had researched this dehumidifier better I would have never bought it.

functional and easy to use

We purchased this dehumidifier to help with moisture in the basement.  Not only does it work like a champ, it is so easy to use.  The digital board is easy to navigate and the light display letting you know when it is full is super convenient.  We have not had any problems with longevity and would recommend this dehumidifier to friends.

Frigidaire Dehumidifier FDL5051 didn't last very long.

2

I purchased the Frigidaire Model FDL5051 on September 27, 2008 and it stopped working on October 21, 2009. It made it just past the one year warranty period. It still has the remaining four years on the sealed refrigeration system. The cost to ship this item to a repair facility cost about have the price or replacing it. So much for a five year warranty. This unit worked good until it started making cracking and popping sounds. After that it would work for about 20 minutes then it would stop removing water from the air. This is the second dehumidifier we have owned (1st was not a frigidaire unit) in the last three years, at least the 1st one lasted two years on a one year warranty. I think I will try to find a different brand and hope it will last longer than the last two lasted.

Gets the job done - but could be better.

A dehumidifier works great at keeping some of the excess moisture out of your house and holds mold growth at bay - which is why I went shopping for one! The Frigidaire had a good price, and so we picked it up. There are a lot of great things about this dehumidifier. It's pretty easy to move around and it really holds a lot of water. It gets the job done. The water tank is easy to empty and you never have to change the filter. It's pretty easy to work the controls and tell the machine what level of humidity you want in the room, but that's really about where the positives end in my book.  The digital controls aren't very accurate about the humidity levels in the room, and the unit really puts out a lot of hot air. After a couple of hours of running the dehumidifier, the room is so sweltering hot you have to turn it off or turn up the air conditioner, plus the machine is rather loud. But other than that, it's not a bad machine at all. It did help with my allergies, I just have to consider what times to turn it on.
