Smashbox Photo Finish Eye Primer

5

I've tried a few eye primers now and this one is easily my favorite thus far. After wearing it under my eye shadow all day, the color remained completely un-creased and showed no signs of fading. I should point out here that I have exceptionally oily skin, including on my eyelids, so typically, without primer, my shadow is creased within an hour or two and by mid-day it is pretty much gone. SB's primer is a bit different from most others in that it's thicker and is not clear. It comes with a sponge applicator, much like you might find in a concealer or even a lip gloss. It pats on easily and, although it does have a dark yellow-y beige color, I found that this color did nor show up at all under the light colors of shadow I used over it. It initially looked and felt like it would feel heavy on my lids, but I found this to be completely untrue. I forgot I was wearing it - until I looked in the mirror several hours later and saw my eye shadow looking as though I had just applied it! I even like SB's packaging. I appreciate their clean, almost clinical lines. Awesome stuff. It's not cheap, but I don't think any of the cheap brands make such a product anyway.

Works just as promised (but pricey).

I absolutely love Smashbox products because they really deliver as promised--and this lid primer is no exception. I only tried it because I got a free sample (Smashbox includes decent sized samples with every order)--I would never, ever have spent money on a lid primer otherwise, as they always seemed like a waste of money to me. Once I used it a few times, however, then went back to NOT using it, I could really see a difference in my eye makeup. First, the primer makes for a smoother base, resulting in more even coverage. It also unifies the lid color, so even when I'm sleep deprived the shadow looks the same all across my lid. And, it really does keep shadow from creasing. A few cons: the little sponge brush tends to pull at the eyelid, which can be uncomfortable. The color (it only comes in one) was a little dark for my fair skin, so I had to be careful to only apply it exactly where it would be covered by eyeshadow. Also, its pricey.

Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer in Golden Nude

4

Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer's new color is Golden Nude. I like the Smashbox lid primer because it is a nude color not clear like other primers. The reason I like this is because sometimes I like to wear it alone, without any accompanying eyeshadow. My skin is very fair so sometimes my eyelids look a bit red, so I can dab a little of this on and I'm ready to go, it looks very natural. It comes in a tube and the top screws off to reveal a small sponge on the end for application. I don't generally use this, I have a concealer brush that I use to appy the primer on my lids, that way I have more control over how much goes on and that it is spread evenly. The new golden color is very nice, kind of a nude shimmer, but very light on the shimmer. I've found that this primer does help my eyeshadow go on nice and even, and stay on. And even if my shadow were to come off, my lids aren't "naked".  My only complaint is the amount of product in the tube. It almost feels empty as soon as you get it.

Is This Supposed to be a Primer or a Concealer?

I think that this product and I had a little misunderstanding.  When I received the sample, I was under the impression that the **Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer **was going to be similar to the transparent, lightweight feel of [DHC Velvet Skin Coat][1]  primer (which I absolutely adore).  In fact, when I opened the sample and saw the peachy-beige contents, I thought I had opened a concealer or liquid foundation by mistake.  But no--Smashbox eyelid primer really does have the texture and consistency of foundation. Unlike the elegant, glide-across-your-skin feel of [DHC Velvet Skin Coat][2] , I found that the Smashbox primer had a tacky texture that tugged at my skin a little.  Nothing major, but not anything I would want to deal with on a frequent basis. Once I applied the primer, I looked in the mirror and laughed because it looked as though I had purposely applied the wrong-color foundation to my lids.  I did wipe some off before putting on the eyeshadow.  However, I had to be careful to cover up every bit of primer with the shadow. On the plus side, the Smashbox Eyelid Primer really did keep my eyeshadow crease-free and smudge-proof all day.  So much so, that it took a little bit of extra wiping to get it all off at the end of the night.  I think that it's possible that this primer could be a good option if your skin tone matches the color of the primer.  Maybe the pigments help to conceal dark shadows or redness, or something.  But for me, **Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer **just left me feeling confused.
