A few years ago I recieved my Singer Protege as a gift from a friends mother.  I had been using an older machine that was really heavy and didn't work too well either.  I love my singer, and since recieving in have begun sewing much more often than I used to, in fact, I sew all of the time now!   It is lightweight and so very easy to move around from one place to another, so I don't feel like I have to leave it in one place all of the time.  It has several functions and works very well.  The only time I have ever had any problems, I just had to give it some oil, clean out the lint and it once again worked perfectly.  The instruction manual makes it very easy to figure out how to use everything, if you have never sewn before, then this would be a great machine to learn on.  It has an extra spool pin, so you do not have to take out your thread just to refill your bobin.  Just keep it where it is, and have a backup spool to use for bobin threading.  I love my singer and would highly recommend it to anyone who just needs a good sewing machine.
