16 years ago when my fist grand child was born - I bought a Brother XL2022 sewing machine. This has proven to be a great investment, though it was relatively inexpensive. Not only did I make curtains for the nursery, but have made other things & am still using it for mending, hemming & minor repairs. I have not had any problems with this sewing machine, it has been easy to do the maintenance  on it myself & not given me the problems my former brand of sewing machine gave me. I would highly recommend a Broter Sewing Machine to anyone wanting an beginner's to moderate sewing machine.
