We grew up with Bengay. If something hurt, it got rubbed. To a point. If you ever get this on sensitive areas - let's just go with rubbing it too close your eyes - then you will quickly learn that this product is one to apply carefully. It's also important to wash your hands after applications.

Bengay is for muscle aches and pains. It's cream that you rub directly on the areas giving problems. I like that. I'd rather use a topical ointment than take internal medications. The impact is also faster with a topical.

When you rub this on a sore calf muscle or something, then it feels hot. The muscle begins to relax and then feels better.

If you take a hot shower first, then this can be overpowering. Your pores open up and ut-oh. It is really hard to rub it off if you do that. I would not recommend a hot shower prior to application.

I really swear by Bengay. It did me right when I worked sheet metal. That's some pretty heavy work. I'd often have strains and just general aches. I do, however, respect this cream and know not to put it close to any body part that might be termed delicate and also do not lather up after a soothing hot shower. I can only stand so much heat and on so many body parts.

I tried the normal Bengay without much success, so I gave the Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream a try. Both products have a wintergreen scent, which I really would prefer not to be so strong. It does seem to dissipate a bit when the cream is absorbed.

Relative to how it works, I find that it does not provide a nice icy cooling sensation prior to the warming sensation as does other products like Icy Hot. I do prefer that initial icy like pain deadening sensation.

According to the instructions, there is a limit to the amount of times you can apply this product. So, I waited until my pain was at its full strength before I applied it, so as to permit me to apply it in a way that would provide intervals of relief. For me those intervals were only about thirty minutes for almost elimination of the pain. Then I wait for the next spaced interval to reapply. Using this strategy makes the product's efficacy seem higher for my pain symptoms.

The cream is very thick, which makes it somewhat difficult to apply.

Overall, it's not my ideal pain relief.

Bengay ultra strength

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

Bengay ultra strength actually works well at relieving pain from muscle issues, arthritis and any other deep tissue pain you might be experiencing. It is very strong though so use sparingly. I have bad neck and back pain and like to massage in pain creams to help on my bad days. This product is warm, well hot really, after you start rubbing it in. The heat is what I feel helps the most at relieving my muscle aches, it sort of releases the tension in my muscles that causes my pain. If I use to much the heat is more of a burn and it does not feel good! It says on the box not to use with a heating pad and I can see why they put that warning on there. Adding heat to already existing heat will cause you to burn. It has a very strong smell and if you use it close to your eyes they start to water and sting a little. I have to use medical gloves when I apply this because I fear I won't be able to wash it all off and I will touch my eyes. Overall though it does what it claims.

Maybe for some, not for me.

By

from Rome,GA

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

I have tried many different types of pain relief creams, Bengay Ultra Strength was one of the first due to it's long time name brand standing. I bought it and tried it but I can't feel any improvement. It seems the only real effect I got from this product was a burning sensation on my skin. I must admit I didn't much like the sensation and it seemed to keep on stinging even after repeated attempts to wash it off. I won't be using this product anymore myself as it seems to have some component that doesn't play well with my body's system. I have had others tell me the praises of Bengay Ultra Strength many times and they don't have this reaction. This could be a good product for some but not for me. I could understand how the warming effect could help pain relief efforts, but just not in my personal case. My other family members have used it without any bad effects or redness, but on me it stings terribly and raises the skin in red welts wherever it is applied. If you try this product use it first on a small area to see if you are sensitive to it. I was a little disappointed by such a well known product to being so harsh without any real warning that it could be..

Helps relieve my lower back pain!

By

from Orange County, Ca

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

I sprained my tail bone about 15 years ago, a swing broke while I was in mid-air! You can say "Ouch"!! I develop back pain when I'm sitting for long periods of time. I always have BenGay Ultra Strength in my medicine cabinets. Last week, my family were driving for 3 hours for a camping trip. I apparently slept on my back for long period of time. My lower back was achy as well as my neck. I told my family that I'm going to use Bengay on myself. They hate the strong smell, however, I don't mind the smell at all!! Bengay's cream has a light texture, not heavy in my opinion. It can seam greasy but it's so easy to apply on your skin. I used a generous amount on my lower back and neck last week. I didn't want my annoying pain to ruin my family's camping trip. In less than one hour on the road, my lower back and neck were fine! I enjoyed my family camping trip for four days, pain free! I prefer to use bengay for my lower back over a pain medicine. I have tried pain meds but they are not as effective. Don't let the size fool you, it lasts for a long time! Ben Gay Ultra Strength is economically easy on your budget!

Cures pain at the cost of your nose.

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

I've used this on several occasions, and there are two major points. First, pain goes away pretty darn quick. My lower back pain after bending over and icing several hundred cupcakes for an entire afternoon was gone almost instantly after applying the cream.
Second point - it smells NASTY. Like, almost offensive. I work in a kitchen, and we always know when a certain person is working because the entire breakroom smells like Bengay cream. It overtakes the scent of burgers and fries, which is something my Bath and Body Works stuff has trouble doing.
In my opinion, its worth it, because it just works so darn good. You just think that with science creating self-driving cars and ovens that can boil water instantly that Bengay could improve the smell of their cream to be at least upgraded to 'mildly offensive'. I guess when you have muscle and joint pain you really don't care how you smell, you just want to feel better.

A good product for pain relief

By

from Oakwood Village, OH

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

I use this on occasion when my arthritis flares up or when I'm sore from exercise as I always have a tube of this on hand in my linen closet. Although I often try other topical pain relieving products Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream is one of my household standbys that I keep in the rotation. It also gives a pretty good amount of soothing warmth to my sore spots that I apply it to, but it won't burn my skin unless I already have skin irritation. It's not oily and absorbs in my skin fast. It soothes my aches and pains in my sides, waist, neck and achy joints. I have used this product for years and it's a good product that does what it claims. They have also improved the smell and it's much much better as it's not nearly as strong as it use to be, but I have found that the smell and whether it's very strong in this product or a lesser amount as it is now, doesn't matter in it's effectiveness.. I have also used Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream for menstrual cramps as well in the past and it also brought relief for that.

Does not seem to work like it used to!

By

from chicago Illinois

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

At one time, this product was a stand by in my home growing up and even in my own home when I became an adult and experienced joint and muscle pains. Of course, the main thing I remembered about this product was the smell and and tingle it made once it was applied to the skin. It still has the overpowering smell that reminds you that it is Ben-Gay, however it does not seem to be as effective as it was when I was growing up. It seemed that I had to use it a bit more regularly at the time in order to get a lasting affect. Nonetheless, it somewhat did ease the joint pain. I gave it an 8 because regardless of the relief I may or may not get from this product, I still have a high level of regard for a product that has been around for a good number of years and is still doing a decent job of relieving pain for active people. I still recommend this product for mild to moderately severe pain, as I don't think joint pain ever fully goes away no matter what you use for it or on it.

This Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream works great!

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

I keep this Bengay cream on hand in my house all the time! My Husband works in construction and he often has back pain and sore muscles often! I always put this cream on his back to relieve his muscle pain. It cools and relieves the muscle pain. It does not help much if the back is out of place but if it's just sore muscles this works wonderfully! It has a strong smell, but I don't mind the smell! Just be very careful to not get this cream in your eyes or other sensitive areas! Be very careful it is strong and burns if gotten in the eyes ect. This is a popular item with the rest of my family as well! We use it all the time! Last time my brother in law visiting he pulled a muscle in his back and asked for Bengay! It is a wonderful product for a great price and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from frequent back pain, and sore muscles! It's a great product to have in the cabinet for emergencies and to help you relax your muscles!

It helps ease muscle aches and pains but the smell is strong.

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

I like the effect of this cream because it does help relieve muscle aches and pains. I have used this multiple times on muscle aches and sprained ankles. I've even used it just on sore spots that needed a little bit of relief after my car accident. The main draw back for me of this product is the smell. I don't usually mind the menthol smell because it kind of smells like peppermint but out of a dozen or so products I've used in this category, this one is by far the strongest smelling.

The Bengay cream works and that's the best thing about it but the smell is just a bit louder than other products. I wish there was a way to calm the smell down.

I like that this comes in a resealable tube. You can also buy it in a smaller variety or a larger variety depending on your needs. The tube is travel size and I've throw this in my bag on my way to work on many occasions because you do need to reapply a few times throughout the day.

The pain relief lasts for a couple of hours but it gradually decreases after application. It immediately goes to work tingling and soothing but after the first twenty minutes to a half hours, it starts to wan quickly over the next couple of hours. This does take the edge off of most aches, pains, bruises, and sprains. It works best if you relax and let it do its job. I don't recommend trying to use this and then going and putting strain on the injured area. It isn't a cure all and it just takes the edge off of the irritated area.

A Classic for a Reason

By

from Hartford, CT

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

There are two major brands of effective pain relieving cream and Bengay is one of them. They've been around forever since they just plain work. They have some unfortunate things that go with their effectiveness but they work.

The classic Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream has the traditional menthol stink about it. There's just no getting away from it. It's just part of the experience. So be prepared to apply the product only when you will be at home and won't subject others to it.

Thankfully the manufacturers have improved their formula over the years and it is now more of a cream than an ointment which means that it does not stain your clothing, bedding, or sofa. It absorbs quickly and easily and does not leave any greasiness behind.

I've found the cream to be particularly effective for strained, achy muscles. If my shoulders get achy this comes to the rescue quickly and easily. I use it mostly in the summer months when it's just too darn hot to use a heat patch.

Just be sure to wash your hands after applying it, or wear gloves, or you may experience its numbing effects in your hands as well which probably won't be welcome.

Nice relief for achy joints and heels

By

from Eastlake, OH

Comments about Bengay Ultra Strength Pain Relieving Cream:

A very active spring has made my legs and feet miserable. I have severe heel pain and by the end of the day I am barley able to stand or walk around my house. Taking too many pain relievers makes my stomach feel upset and so I was looking for a topical cream that would help to dull the pain. This cream went on very easily and within a few minutes I felt a warmth and tingling going to the area on my heels. I was able to walk around without pain and I had a full range of mobility through my feet and ankles. I was able to take only one dose of ibuprofen and the feeling of comfort lasted throughout the next day. I experienced no redness or irritation although the area was very warm to the touch. It left no residue on my hosiery which was nice and the smell which was very strong on application did lessen about an hour later. I always wear a pair of gloves when I rub the cream in as my fingers are very sensitive.
