Acer Aspire great bet for the buck.
This is my second Acer Aspire laptop. The first lasted a good 4 years with little to no problems. This machine appears to be even better with the Windows 7 package. There are many pros to the updated version of this machine. First, I love the even bigger screen that has great clarity. The other thing I love is the built-in number pad. That has been one of my biggest complaints with laptops. I am very data/number driven and always felt lost on my previous laptop. This machine has a set of floating keys on the keyboard that the jury is still out on. They are comfortable and easy to type on, however I am concerned about dust and debris getting under the keys. I have already had to work on repairing one of the keys that came loose. There is very little information out there on how to repair this new style of laptop keyboard. It does offer a Mult-Gesture touchpad that allows the use of two fingers to do the following: enlarge or shrink the screen, shift the screen left or right, shift the screen up or down and refresh the screen. I do not know if it is due to the new operating system (Windows 7) or this machine itself, but I love the fact that you can close the top of the laptop and move to another location, then simply open the top and hit any button and it brings windows right back up where you left off. No silly reboot/log on type screens to mess with. This machine also comes with some nice intro packages to MS Office. There seems to be no pressure to purchase, but a genuine offer to evaluate the program. I like the new windows media player and game arcade. They are both easy to use and quick to learn. There are 3 USB ports on the left side of the machine and one on the right side. There is an ethernet port on the right as well. This is also the location of the DVD drive. There is some port on the left, in addition to the USBs that I do not recognize. The machine offers a built-in webcam by Crystal Eye which has worked well. It is perfect for those needing to skype. The Acer Aspire 7736Z offers decent battery life for heavy-use programs. I am generally getting a solid 2 hours on the battery before having to plug back in. Although this is not the best, it is much better than the 30 minutes I was getting before. I believe that Acer continues to offer a good product for a great price. There was nothing else that compared with the amount of memory and storage for the price.
