This printer is great. It can be wireless too if you need that. Its quick easier to install, easy cartridge installation too. The printer came with a toner cartridge that didn't last long, but because I registered the printer, Brother sent me an additional cartridge as they knew the ones with the printer didn't last long. The new cartridge they sent last me 8 months and I do a lot of printing. This is small enough to fit on your workstation area too. The boring grey color is a okay as it doesn't show the dust that collects on it so easily from the static. It sits in wait mode as to not use a lot of electricity too, overall this is a great home/office desktop printer that I would recommend to anyone in the market for an inexpensive printer Performance ITs a great printer for the price and well worth the money. I don't think the toner cartridges last as long as my HP toners but they are a bit lower in price. I can't complain about this unit. Wireless, low power mode. My friend purchased this printer over 1 year ago. He was so happ. y with the ease of setup and value that he convinced me to purchase one as well. It comes with a toner cart which does not last too long (about 200 pages) but I did find a trick on line in which you can tape over a small sensor on the toner and it lasts about another 120 pages. The setup was not as easy as my friend described (and I am tech savy) I had to use the included CD and make some small changes on my network, but I got it to work. Now all of the wireless and 1 wired computer on my network have access to this printer. The print quality is decent (not too dark) but not light either just the right tone for me. It is also quite easy to remove and replace the toner as well. Brother toner is a bit expensive, but if you search you can find generic toner which works quite well for 1/2 the cost. I recommend this printer and would buy it again.

This Brother HL-2170W printer is a real workhorse. It is meant as a home use or small office printer and it definitely delivers the goods. I have printed thousands of pages on this printer with only a few easy to clear jams. The text quality for laser printers cannot be beat and this one is no exception. Each page it prints has crisp, clear text. Because it is a laser and thus uses toner instead of ink, the printing is impervious to water damage. Unfortunately it only prints black and white but at this price point that is to be expected. This printer does what is asked of it and exceeds expectations. I would definitely recommend it to family members and anyone looking for a small workgroup printer for their small or home office. The toner is cheap and the printer is virtually maintenance free. As long as you use high quality paper you shouldn't see many paper jams. Don't waste your money on HP, go Brother!

i got this printer after being tired of my inkjet cartridges drying out. i live in a dry house and don't print that often, so it seemed the laser printer was the best way to go. the worst thing about this printer is setting it up. i use it in wireless mode and the included software and instructions weren't too helpful. after looking around online i eventually found people with similar problems and was able to figure it out (the printer was in wired network mode and had to be switched to wireless). after setup and adding the printer to all the computers in the house, the thing has been working great for the most part and always prints when asked. a small problem is that apparently the ink cartridge it comes with is "programmed" to stop after some amount of pages, though there's still ink left. i found a recommended fix of covering a sensor with tape, and that lasted me another couple months before i finally got a new cartridge. despite my complaints, the printer is quite nice and the wireless is awesome once you get it setup. probably the best printer i've owned.

Before I got my Brother I had used a variety of HP and Epson inkjet printers, but I was mainly printing papers for school and some occasional coupons.  As you can imagine, this ate tons of ink and was really starting to burn through my wallet, despite having bought my inkjets pretty cheaply on clearance.  I've had my Brother for a couple of years now and it has saved me tons of money.  I use it for most of my day to day printing and only resort to my inkjet when I absolutely have to print something in color.  The toner cartridge that comes with the unit lasted a good while and after taping over the window on the side kept going and going.  Coming from an inkjet, its phenomenally fast and since its wireless it was pretty easy to set up all the computers in the house to print to it.  Of course it only prints black and white, but if you print a lot of text pages for your records or whatever, its still a great investment to own in addition to a color printer.

I am an avid couponer and a great amount of coupons are now available only online. This makes for very easy access but it was not cost efficient with my inkjet printer. I was buying ink cartridge refills bi-weekly and they were not cheap! I did some research and decided I was going to give a monochrome laser printer a try for my coupon needs and I am so glad I did! My inkjet would run out of ink after printing about 50 pages. The toner for this printer lasts through about 1000 pages, more if you turn on toner saver. It's amazing! For a slightly higher cost you can get a high yield toner cartridge which will print more than double that amount for less than double the price. It's quiet, efficient, wireless, sleek, super fast, easy to use and it really wasn't that expensive. I found mine on sale for less than I would have paid for an inkjet. I kept my inkjet since it prints in color but I haven't used it since I bought the Brother and I don't intend on ever using it again unless I have a real need for color printing.

I've ordered quite a few of these Brother printers over the past few years for users I support.  Historically, I've been an HP guy but was disappointed by a few of their most recent laser printers and heard some great things about Brother printers from a fellow IT colleague.  Let me say that I've been greatly impressed by the printer.  It's quite a breeze to setup and I've had any configuration problems with Windows or Macs.  The best part of the printer is its overall cost which is probably due to the low markup from Brother.  In fact, the consumables regularly go on sale and I've found them to be far less in price versus HP, Samsung, Canon, and the other big players in the field.  Drivers are routinely updated on the Brother website as well to address potential problems.  Overall, I've been a very satisfied Brother owner and hope they release larger sized models in the not to distant future.

I just bought this printer like two weeks ago and I adore it already.  It is mountain loads better than the previous printers I've bought which is the samsung and an hp printer--both were useless and broke in a month.  This one seems more sturdy (plus I bought two years warranty!).  It is very very easy to set up--usb, wired, wireless--I did it without any help.  Actually the wireless might be a little trouble for those who isn't familiar with routers and network, but there is a manual on the brothers website so you can follow the steps if you need to.  The printer is very fast, I've only had one laser printer before and that was the samsung which was full of fail and I think this one is faster than that one.  I've printed a lot already and I just checked the status of my toner and drum and I still have plenty to go!  This is awesome!  Also I checked out the prices of toners and they are very cheap so I don't have to worry about replacing either.  I heard that each toner can last you at least a year even through heavy usage (might have to check out the tape trick).  And I also love printing wirelessly from my laptop too, I never had that before.  Highly recommended!!!

When we upgraded all our desktop PC's to Windows 7 64-bit we could no longer print to our aging Minolta printer. After searching in vain for drivers we finally decided it was time to purchase a new printer.  After reading several reviews on the Brother HL-2170W I figured that this one would fit the bill.  Installation was very straight forward.  Plug the unit into a open port on your router and then run the supplied install disk on each computer.  That's it.  The problems we had with our old printer are now a thing of the past.  Our new Brother printer prints every time without paper jams or error and with nice clear sharp quality text.  I also learned a trick you can use to extend the life of the toner cartridges.  Place a piece of black tape over one of the holes at either end of the toner.  This tricks the sensor into thinking there is still enough toner and allows you to get the maximum number of prints out of them.

In the past the majority of network laser printers have been both too heavy and too expensive as they were intended for heavy-duty office use, but this printer changed everything.
