Viewpoints Launch Party in Chicago —

I don't hop on a plane and head off for a party just every weekend. In fact, I don't guess I've ever done that.

Initially I sent my regrets and said that the Viewpoints Launch Party sounded like great fun and that I hoped everyone would have a great time. I would be looking forward to reading all about it back here in North Carolina.

Jolie asked if I might consider attending if they could round up a plane ticket.

Hum.

The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to go. It would take a little juggling, but there really wasn't any reason I couldn't take off for a couple of days.

Folks here in town were very excited when they heard about this great opportunity. My employer, Catawba College, got some key chains and pencils for me to share in Chicago. Roush Racing sent ball caps and lug nuts that had actually been on cars in NASCAR races. I packed up four 12-packs of Cheerwine and mailed those. The senior ladies at the Visitor's Center stayed up late to pack some travel bags. I grabbed a couple of bags of pork rinds too.

My boys complained a little bit - not much. They were glad I was getting to do something exciting even though they weren't thrilled about the family cook being gone for two days. I left them some frozen pizzas and corn dogs. They know how to cook those. I think they miss me for more than my cooking though. My youngest son even surprised me by cleaning up the garage and the house. Maybe I should go party more often.

I got up at 5 a.m. on Friday morning and drove to Charlotte to catch my plane. Have I ever mentioned that I am not a morning person? Be glad you did not have to ride with me! Then I jumped the subway at O'Hare over to the Sheraton Towers right on the water.

I took a quick nap and then followed the map to the Cabaret. I wasn't sure how long those city blocks would be. I remember they were really long blocks in Las Vegas. They were more like normal blocks in Chicago, so I was the first to arrive. When they say to, "Be sure to be on time in Chicago," they mean fashionably a few minutes late I think, but I had time to take some photos and also to chat with folks before the party got rolling.

The Viewpoints folks recognized me when I walked in the door, so I must look pretty much like my user picture in the tire swing. My son took a bunch of pictures, and wouldn't you know it - that one turned out the best. So, I am "Tarzan Momma" from North Carolina.

I sat down to chat with Meredith and her friend Austen. Meredith is the Viewpoints intern. She is such a cute young woman as is her buddy. Meredith is getting ready to head off to Spain next week. How exciting. We had a great time talking. The girls were from North Carolina too which was certainly a surprise.

The crew at Viewpoints is mostly male. There's Jolie, of course. She fabulous. She is every bit as nice as she is on the site - and even more so. And, Meredith has been holding down the fort (on the female end), but the rest of the employees are guys. I'm used to being around guys, and these fellows are all terrific.

I did have to hunt up Kyle. Jolie told me he likes my reviews, and that's one sure way to a writer's heart. He uses a South Park Kyle photo, so that makes it a bit hard to pick him out. I can tell you that he's a cutie and very funny too. I'm thinking I might adopt him.

I watched as folks came in, and I did recognize our Viewpoints writers. You never know when it's online. I can assure you that what you see is what you get here.

I sat with Buggheart and her husband and Rosewriter.

Buggheart is fun, lively and definitely an artist with her make up. She looked quite stunning. Mr. Buggheart was a sweetie. He was a great sport about our girl talk, and he grabbed us some drinks and turned in our game cards. He also drew an adorable bug on his name card. Cute touch.

Rosewriter was quiet but really easy to talk to. Her boys are lucky to have such a truly sweet mom. We walked home together afterwards, and I'm glad we got a chance to talk one-on-one. I did get us lost, of course. I'm ADHD on directions. Someone told us how to get back to the Sheraton but said to be careful with it so late. I told the kind young lady that we were actually gang members. We all laughed about that, because I can assure you that the two of us aren't and definitely don't look like it either.

Saxguy and his wife and I had lots to talk about both at the party and at the dinner. They are a very gracious couple with loads of interests.

I knew The Bard. We've written together for years now I think. His wife looked so familiar. I felt like I knew her. Well, I did. She is Love is Joy. I love her articles. I didn't make the connection until right at the end, and I sure wish I'd had time to catch them and talk more. I thought they'd be at dinner. My bad. I'll have to remember to corner them next time.

Libby and Russ both match their photos and reviews. Libby was a little shorter than I expected and Russ a lot taller. Both have great smiles and smile a lot. Russ is one of those regular guys that you'd ask why your lawnmower is puddling. Oh, by the way Russ. It is. My son showed me when I got home.

Somehow I missed Elysabeth. Bummer. I didn't see her until she won the iPhone. Go Elysabeth! I didn't get a chance to give her a high five. I can tell you that's she a real looker, and my pictures did her way wrong.

Bob didn't make it. He had an emergency. I hated that. He's helped me on photos, though I doubt he will want credit for some of them on the new camera this weekend. I'm still learning the settings and what works and doesn't.

One highlight of the party was meeting and talking to Matt Moog. He's the founder of Viewpoints. He is a super nice guy. He told me that he came up with the idea when his grandfather needed cancer treatment. He thought he would be able to find information about the various doctors and hospitals. It's not out there. He decided to create a space where everyone could share and not limited to just a few topics. Matt is quite passionate about Viewpoints and interested in all of us and what we need and want from a consumer review space. I think he and the rest of the crew are doing a terrific job, and they are working on even more new features.

While I was at the party, a man from FOX news called me to the back to interview. I majored in radio/TV, but I have on-camera phobia. The first thing I did was forget my last name. Then I spoke to the camera, but I don't know how that turned out. I think I get my camera skills from Nixon. I don't sweat or have five o clock shadow (thank goodness), but I do look scared. Hopefully I outgrew that. We'll see I guess. Or not. If it's really bad, we can all hope they "can" the footage.

One interesting thing at the party was that when you went to the bathroom (which I had to do immediately after talking to the camera), a lady turned on the water and squirted the soap for you. That's a good idea I think. You know everyone washes his or her hands that way which is good for world health - right? I don't know if the guys had a hand wash helper, although I almost went in the wrong door. I'm not sure they had those labeled. I suspect I should start wearing those glasses the doctor told me I need.

We had loads of snacks at the party, and then we went out to eat. They do know the way to my heart at Viewpoints. I have already prepared the bill for more fat clothes. Seriously, the food was heavenly. I can't even say what was best, since it was all yummy. I even liked the martini. It was fruity, so I didn't know it was a martini. I just pointed at something I'd not seen before. I'm like that.

Jolie was explaining this restaurant we were going to after the Cabaret party, and I misheard one part. She was telling us basically that it was home style, but the word she used sounded like "topless" with all that music and talking. I was thinking, "Well I guess that must be the new hot trend in the city - topless Italian." I thought I probably ought not take pictures. I also thought my mom would not want to know about the topless dinner. We had a waiter anyway, but everyone had their shirts on. I was actually glad I must confess.

We all got Viewpoints t-shirts before we headed off for Italian. It was Jolie's mom's birthday, but she was hanging out with her friends. Mothers. You just can't keep up with them. I sent her some pecan apple butter. Fortunately United Airways did not bust that when they threw my bag on. I had visions of smelling like something to spread on biscuits, but I got lucky. The gift bag was a little wrinked but OK otherwise.

It was late when we wrapped up the night - and later still for me with the time shift. I was about too excited to sleep. Did I mention I tend to be a bit hyper? Well, the party folks will probably tell you that's true. I did fall asleep and then got up and wandered all over Chicago - seriously all over. I missed the part about some of those subways (like the red line I planned on) not running on weekends, so I went places I'm sure I could not find again if I tried. Some of them I think I would not want to look up again either.

Since I lost myself, I missed my plane. They squeezed me on a later flight and flagged me for a search. The grandfather man who hooked me up said that he hoped that I would be there and no later than 8 p.m., so I was there at 7:30. A big bouncer looking guy got to look through my bag. He told me I should have bought more popcorn to take home. I think he thought I looked more terrorized than terrorist after a couple of hours lost on the subways and then a couple of hours to catch the last plane out to Charlotte. I told him that next time I'd bring him some popcorn too.

I'll be, of course, writing reviews on some of the things I saw and did in Chicago. The highlight was meeting the Viewpoints team and some of the writers. It was a fabulous party and a really fun weekend.

Cindy, it was great to meet you at the party. I am also shorter than I thought I would be! ha ha I concur, the party was terrific, Matt was terrific and engaging, Jolie is a ball of energy, Kyle is hilarious and lots of fun, Russ and Leon are TALL and sweet, The Bard is sweet, and on and on. The fact that Matt's idea was borne of passion gives it extra oomph and some powerful karma. (Hey, we already have 100,000 people per month and we just launched! ) I look forward to hanging out with everyone at the 5th anniversary party. (And Cindy, you and I should share a cab to the airport - I took 3 trains and got there with only 10 minutes to spare!) But Chicago is grrrrrreat and I hope to be there again soon. Thanks, Viewpoints !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Chicago can be very confusing. LOL Dont feel bad, your not the only one that gets lost. I got lost and I used to live there. LOL

Hi George - Glad you found Viewpoints. I write lots of places. That's just what I do. Write. This space makes me smile, because it really is friendly, and I love being able to add photos to the reviews.

Hi StarSoldier and Bryan - Wish you'd both been there. I know you guys! But, I've never met ya'll in person. I didn't think it really mattered. Online is great. But, I very much enjoyed seeing some of my online peers in person. It's definately an interesting experience, and it adds another level to the whole thing. No matter how expressively someone writes, it's just different face to face. I apprecaite, even more, those that spend time and effort posting.

Sounds like a great event. I just found the site and registered. Nice job on your review, Cyndi!

I wanted to attend this event, but a new job and other factors prevented me from showing up. It sounds like it was a fun event!

Damn, sorry I missed it.

Hi Bob - I've always hoped to meet you. You do such great high tech reviews. I always understand what you're saying. Sorry about making demon eyes on the photos. I guess my next project is to learn how to fix those.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 3, 2007 at 4:20PM

I sure wish we'd had a chance to hear you play the sax. I always smile when I hear a sax, since my dad played one as we talked about. I haven't had a chance to hunt it down. It may live with my brother who played it in the band. I will ask around.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 3, 2007 at 4:18PM

Hi Jolie's Mom! I guess you'll have a name now (-: I was tickled to see your page. I don't know if I could ever get my mom to sign up anywhere. I think she uses the Internet only for the email, but she enjoys that. So, that's good. You raised a wonderful daughter too I would add.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 3, 2007 at 4:17PM

Oh Jazzy - it was really fun. I hardly ever meet writers. Well, I meet them online which is terrific. But face to face? Very rare. It was just one of those wild hair things that I'm glad I did and will always remember. I'd loved to have met you. I like your reviews about the shelter animals. That's what we do too.

Great write-up! I'm really sorry I missed the party and hope I get a chance to meet you and the rest of the gang at the next one.

Hy Cyndi. Jolie just passed along the sweet gift that you sent for my birthday. (I had to take it from her) What a great treat. Thank you so much for thinking of me. I only wish I could have been there to meet you in person. I hear you are wonderful. Thank you again-- Linda.

Wow that sounds great. I must have been a great experience to meet all these great writers and contributors in person.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 2, 2007 at 2:42PM

You and Patty would have had great fun and would have added a lot to the fun. I hope we all end up the same place at the same time one of these days.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 2, 2007 at 2:41PM

Hi weaselmomma - Yeah. I only carried a credit card. I've heard people take your money in cities (-: I think someone got her a t-shirt. The guys were talking about it. They thought small. I told them that women of our certain ages liked them looser - so medium almost surely. Then, I asked her. She said M - or even L was good.

LaurieM wrote on Oct 2, 2007 at 10:02AM

Cyndi-thank you so much for sharing your experience at the party. I so wanted to be there and you made me feel like I was after reading this review. Glad that everyone had a great time.

weaselmomma wrote on Oct 2, 2007 at 8:28AM

It was a pleasure to meet you and so many others at the party. And what a party it was. A good time seemed to be had by all. Your review is fantastic and funny. The bathroom attendant is a nice perk, but I felt guilty everytime I went in there because I didn't have any tip money in my pocket. LOL, I had a great time too.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:32PM

LOL LoveisJoy - I can just see me trying to get that tire through the subway turnstile.

When I said "hi," I thought, I feel like I know her. Then, I decided you just look like someone else I know. Don't why I never made the connection that you are the Bard were a pair. You make a very nice one.

And, you have the greatest smile ever!

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:29PM

Hiya Saxguy! I tried to get your pic up yesterday, but I errored out. Got it today. Tell the Mrs. hi for me. I'm glad I had a seat with ya'll at dinner. Lots of fun talk.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:27PM

Vytas - I would have known you anywhere. Seriously. You have a lively look that comes out in your photos. You will never be a wall flower or a mystery shopper (-: You're too unique. Wish we'd had more gab time. That's the only down side to great parties. Just hard to get to really talk to everyone you want to.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:24PM

Hi Kyle - The boys had to have home cooked after a weekend of near starvation. Just kidding. There was plenty of food here. I did make them pork chops, gravy and mashed potatoes though. They were thrilled with the t-shirts too (wink).

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:23PM

lbeckley - You are definately someone I'd love to meet. We have so much in common. I have not had chittlins. I would though if I'm ever around when someone is making them (-:

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:15PM

Oh Bard, you and LoveisJoy will like NC. I'll have to find out what you guys care about most as far as where you're living. There are so many different areas ranging from beach to mtns and cities to very small towns.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:14PM

Jolie - Hope your mom enjoys the pecan apple butter. My boys went nuts for it. They weren't sure they wanted to share, but since it was for a mom person . . . OK. They thought we should.

I will do a review on the subways and about weekends. I'll bet someone else needs to know that too. They also should not not to shove a suitcase through. The clicker then thinks you've gone in and won't let you go. The station attendant will come and let you through if they think you are just confused and not cheating the subway out of tickets.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:11PM

LauraBelle - You sure should have come. You'd have had a super time. I'd love to meet you. Your reviews are always fun to read.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:09PM

LOL Kristy - Yes. I saw Matt's red eyes. I have not learned to use the red eye fixer. Maybe Bob can fix that. Matt has very kind eyes. I sure hate I gave him demon eyes.

CyndiA wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 2:08PM

Hi Nicole - I said we could have it in my town next time. Only problem. Not motels. Everyone would have to sleep in the living room. And, I'm sure I'd have to let the gas station to buy extra chicken to fry, since I doubt they stock very much (-:

LoveisJoy wrote on Oct 1, 2007 at 11:41AM

Cyndi, your review of the party is a blast! We had such a nice time. Everyone was just so warm and friendly and it was such a pleasure meeting you. I almost didn't recognize you without your swing--next time you might have to bring it along! :)

We had a really good time, too. I'm very happy I got to meet you in person.

I have to agree - the party was fun - but this review is great! Your southern charm shines. It was great to meet you in person. Thanks for all of you contributions. I look forward to your next review.

Great review. It sounds like a lot of fun. I love cheerwine and porkrinds too. I grew up on them as well as chittlins. You brought back some childhood memories for me. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Keep writing.

Cyndi-- awesome review... and YOU are so great. Everything from the cheer wine to the lug nuts and the pork rinds. But, the sweetest was the apple butter for my mom. How nice of you!! :) I am thrilled you are one of our top reviewers. We are so lucky to have you. I only wished we could have been together the whole night!! And, I am sooo sorry about your flight. I didnt know the red line didnt run all weekend at its normal schedule. :(

LauraBelle wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 10:18PM

Cyndi, I agree with whoever said it 10,000 comments down the list there, that VP should frame this review. This is absolutely perfect and so makes me wish I would have been able to make it ... and I live in town here! (Well, the 'burbs, but at least a flight wouldn't have been required for me to get there ...) Your "down home charm" really came through here. And, I also am up late at night, too excited to sleep after stuff like this, and not not a morning person. Next time. :-)

Kristy wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 9:56PM

Oh Cyndi that sounds like such a time - would have been fun to be there and gotten lost with you LOL
I am thinking they should have a party on the West Coast or at least Disneyworld or a cruise - hey I am sure I could find a great deal! How fun would that be?
And how cool are Matt's red eyes - spooky!!!

Nicole wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 8:14PM

Sounds phenomenal! I second Jo - there should definitely be another party in the future so that all of us no-shows can meet everybody, too! Fantastic writing on this one, Cyndi. You had me in stitches!

roserighter wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 7:50PM

Cindi,
I give you more credit for flying in and taking the subway on your own. I guess that makes us big grils now, huh? lol We can call ourselves the hometown gang! LOL Sorry to hear your got lost and missed your flight though.

You were great to meet in person. I enjoyed your company and I'm sure the interview went fine, as well.

I'm also glad we had the chance to chat a bit as we toured the Chicago city in the wee hours of the night. I'm too shy in big groups of people, I'm much better in the written format or in one-on-one conversations.

CyndiA wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 7:40PM

You were definately missed Patty! I was thinking how much fun we would have had. You've given me so many tips. Hope I got them right!

CyndiA wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 7:38PM

Hi Bugg - one more question for John. Was the hand wash person male or female? I'm still pondering on that. I can't imagine a hand wash guy, but I also can't imagine a lady having to help the guys with hand washing.

CyndiA wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 7:37PM

Oh yes Jo. They told me that you'd been by and got to see the great work out center there. I don't know why they didn't drop me off there (-: I guess they thought the finger foods and dinner were more up my alley. I think they were right!

PattyTherre wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 5:49PM

I was there with you all in spirit. I was on again/off again until the end. I really hope I get a chance to meet people from VP soon. I feel like I know so many already.

Great, and very detailed, review, Cyndi! It was so great to finally meet you and all of the other Viewpoints writers, investors, and staff. It was such a good time and I hope we can do it again one day.

p.s. I checked with John and he said there was a handsoap assistant in the men's room as well. :)

Cyndi - this is your best review ever. I mean you're funny anyway but this is a classic. Viewpoints should frame it. I can't believe (well I guess I'm getting to know you better so maybe I can) that you lost yourself and missed your plane. What a riot - well not for you but for the reader. It sounded great. The only consolation I have is that I did meet Matt, Jolie and a couple of the guys but it's not the same. I hope they do it again in my lifetime:) Jo

Hi Tracy - I was majorly impressed that you drove in. I'm not sure I'd have taken that on. I think that makes you the gang leader (-: I saw the museum but didn't have enough time to go in. I went up above to Grant Park. I have party photos that I'm putting up on Kodak. I'll get the link, so everyone can see the shots. It was great meeting you. You are definately someone I would pick for a hometown friend. We have so much in common. I was nervous about my boys too - though they really are old enough to stay here. I doubt we'll ever outgrow that.

roserighter wrote on Sep 30, 2007 at 3:09PM

Great review, Cyndi! It was so nice to meet you in person. I told me family about being initiated as a "gang member" too:) I'm glad we at least had each other to walk with, gang members or not! LOL

I do agree though, I was SO glad I went and felt welcomed by everyone we met, from staff and incestors to friends and fellow writers.

Jolie has been great all along so I couldn't wait to meet her in person. It was great to meet Matt and the rest of the staff, as well.

I was nervous to leave my boys for the weekend and take my first trip by myself, but I was not disappointed. I even took in the Chicago Institute of Art and some of Millenium Park before rentering the crazy traffic to head back to MI on Sat.
