Tombstone (1993)

This is an excellent modern take of the storied wild west battle celebrated as The Gunfight at OK Corral - by the way, the movie that I just named is the very best film version of that story should you want to have another excellent choice.

However, if you can't have Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster, the second choice goes to Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer as the notorious killer Doc Holliday. Russell, of course, is the upright Wyatt Earp, the hero of the story.

Various versions have been made of this encounter, the most famous gunfight in western history, and each has a particular focus. Tombstone shows the events leading up to the battle, then the assassination and wounding of Earp's two brothers, and finally, Wyatt Earp's hunting down the cowboys and virtually exterminating them from the face of the earth.

Kurt Russell is believable as the stalwart former lawman who wants to retire and enjoy the easy pickings as gamblers crowd around the faro tables he owns a stake in.

Val Kilmer is exceptional in this, his most memorable role as the drunken dentist with the hair trigger temper. Kilmer gave the doctor an edgy persona that spewed quotable lines that have made it into the lingo, like

"I'm your huckleberry," and "You ain't no daisy, atall!"

Kilmer is endlessly entertaining as he chews the scenery, rare for him. Watch him best Johnny Ringo who puts on a display of fancy pistol twirling by simply twirling his tin whiskey cup.

The Cowboys, a gang of local toughs, known by their red sashes, are led by Powers Boothe as Curly Bill Brocious in a flamboyant performance. The actual Clantons and McLaurys are fairly in the background as Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn (Johnny Ringo) take center stage as the chief baddies.

The biggest qualm I have with Tombstone, other than the fictitiousness of the script is the length of the production, which like many films today runs about 20 minutes beyond its welcome.

The Buenavista DVD is presented in color, in 2.35:1 theatrical format, and running 130 minutes in the theatrical cut or 134 minutes in the director's cut, also available.

Good rooten tooten shooten fun!

Thank you much! He was certainly at his best as Doc Holliday. He shined like a diamond. ;>

One of my favorite westerns!!! My favorite line in the movie, as you said, "I'm your huckleberry!" I loved it!!! Kilmer's absolute best role. He made a sickly man - sexy as hell! He shined in each scene.

You might be right - whatever he said, it blew people's minds, just like Holliday's 45 blew Ringo's mind. ;>

I can watch this movie over and over again. Val Kilmer gives an incredible performance as Doc Holiday. I always thought he said " I'm here, huckleberry" Don't know that it makes much difference. Superb!

This movie is a cult classic with my mom and siblings! Mostly because of Val Kilmer's "I'm your huckleberry." Classic! :)

Agreed - MDC and Gunfight are much better. Thanks for reading and commenting, Chris!

It's okay thanks to a couple of performanced like Kurt's but My Darling Clementine and Gunfight at O.K. Corral are far far FAR better films. And there's dozens of Westerns I'd recommend before we get to this one. Nicely written review as usual, George !!!!
