If you're ever in NC, traveling on 95, take the Red Oak Exit just north of Rocky Mount to the small town of Dortches and find Smith's Red and White Grocery.  Stop any stranger on the street and they'll direct you there.... believe me, they're used to folks asking. Even if you're not near  the area, make this a desination trip.  I usually do 90% of my Christmas shopping at this legendary country grocery store.  Its draw? The  world's best link sausage seasoned with sage and red pepper - you can order it mild or hot -  made from only the choicest cuts   right there on the premesis.  Sausage sales (30,000 lbs/week during holiday season!) bring folks from all over the US.  I went for the first time about 5 years ago for the sausage, but now am just as impressed with its quality foods and its unassuming good ol' country store ambience, and the friendliest employees you'll ever find.  So, what else to stock up on there? Many varieties of home canned vegetables and fruits, pickles, preserves, yummy baked goods, homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese, and corned hams.  And yes, since this is a regular grocery store, you can get your normal everyday fare there, too, including fresh produce from local gardens. I'll put this modest little family owned store in the middle of nowhere  up against a fancy  shiny uber-grocery anywhere.  Now, if only Snappy's Diner with its famed pork chop sandwiches would move from Mt. Airy to Dortches, I'd move there too.  As it is, I live halfway between the two, and am content with my day trips there.

I know what you mean...While at my cousins last year for the 4th of July we had the most awesome breakfast, that included this sausage that he drove 2.5 hours each way to get from NC...On the way to Florida on I-95 he gave us directions to bring enough for his family and we did the same for the Christmas holidays...needless to say, both groups were salivating over this sausage (even my son who is not a big pork eater). Between both groups we fed about 30 people. I'm about 1.5 hours away from me, and I now have breakfast request with "THAT sausage" from family for the Labor Day weekend. :o What am I going to do!?! Trying to find someone going to NC for a family reunion and hop off and go to Smith's! It surely is worth the ride! I came back thru there before closing on Saturday after christmas an the cupboards were almost bare, when we went that Tuesday before...there were so many goodies and basket filling items It was like wonderland and full of travelers. We were still able to get the sausage links and a hunk of cloth cheese, YUMM-MEEE! Love that store!

The sausage is awesome -- but the last time we were there they only made it fresh a couple of days a week. We bought some of what they had, but were dissappointed that it wasn't fresh, fresh.

From Garysburg, NC but resides in Fort Washington, MD and whenever we are in the NC area, we try to get there since it is just approx. 35 miles down the road as they say in the country. More truth when it is said that they have a very good variety of other things that just wants you to take a truck and just load up with food, etc. At Xmas, I especially like the single dipped chocolate covered peanuts. I like the meatskins. I like their BBQ; the brunswick stew and yes, I go for the sausage - go early. Store hours are M-F 8a-7p and Sat 8a-6p. Could go on and on but ...
