It is still effective

Chlorpromazine is the oldest typical antipsychotic out there.  I started out with 150 mg a day and was taking it concurrently with Zyprexa for over a month.  It took a month for my voices and delusions to completely go away (I suffer from schizoaffective disorder).  I gained a lot of weight (15 pounds) and was not happy about that.  Even after I discontinued the Zyprexa I could not lose the weight even while exercising for 1.5 to 2 hours at least 3 days a week.  When my doctor started lowering my dosage I finally saw pounds drop off.  I liked the medication because it was cheap, something I cannot say for the newer atypical antipsychotics like Abilify and Geodon.  It was also effective at high dosages.  When my doctor wanted to take me completely off of it and just have me on a mood stabilizer she lowered the dosage from 150 mg to 100 mg to 50 mg to finally 35 mg.  This was not enough and I went into a psychotic state because my personal threshold had been breached.  At a high dosage, others noticed that my jaw would uncontrollably move, a sign of extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia, and I experienced other jerking sensations.  In addition, it can cause a longer QT interval, and regular EKGs should be used to monitor the heart.  It is also recommended to monitor the eyes too.  It just doesn't seem worth it to use this drug anymore.
