High qaulity alternative to pork

3

My four year old son really likes sausage.  He would eat it everyday if I let him. I had some concerns about this aspect of his diet as sausage is high in fat and choleterol.  I was looking for a healthier alternative to serve him and I tried several brands of turkey sausages.  Jenny O was, by far, the best of the choices that I tried.  It has a slightly different texture than pork sausage but it wasn't so far off that it made in unappealing.  The flavor of the sausages is good.  They taste very simillar to a more traditional pork sausage.  After cooking traditional sausages I had to drain the grease from the pan and there would usually be a substantial amount.  With the Jenny O turkey sausages there was very little grease from cooking as they are much lower in fat.  My son didnt' seem to notice a difference which was nice. I can offer him a healthier alternative without denying him what he likes.

Bad news for turkeys, good news for us!

Yes, these are dark days for turkeys.  I cannot imagine the scope of the turkey massacre going on out there to create all these healthier alternatives to old favorites but here's another one ... *Jennie-O Turkey Store Mild Breakfast Sausage Links*.  For those of you who have sworn you would never touch any kind of sausage with turkey in it, this might be a good chance to reconsider! Two links are considered to be *what I consider to be* a rather paltry serving which contains 140 calories with 100 calories from fat.  There are 11 grams total fat, three grams saturated fat, 45 mg. cholesterol, 360 mg. sodium, one gram total carbs, nine grams protein ... as well as 2% (D.V.) Vitamin A and 4% iron.  (You might as well just double these counts up because only the strongest among you are going to be able to stop with just two links!  That's okay, you can sacrifice on something else later in the day to make up for it!)  When it comes to healthy breakfast saugages, I'm pretty sure that you could worse. **TASTE TIP:** Any sausage which contains turkey meat should be cooked properly both for taste and safety.  I follow the directions for cooking these links, then turn off the oven but leave the pan of sausages inside until they are a little overdone, golden brown, and nice and chewy.
