I can't remember life before Tivo, and Humax makes Tivo better
I have become a Tivo devotee and evangelist. Everybody I've tried to talk into getting Tivo and who have ultimately adopted it have raved about Tivo too. My Humax Tivo recorder has been my best TV friend for about 3 years now, and I have no plans to replace "him." My Humax Tivo recorder gives me the option of setting and forgetting all my TV watching. Tivo makes it easy to find and automatically record all my favorite shows, and it even alerts me to conflicts (like Monday nights, when I have 3 favorite shows at the same hour!). I can arrange and rearrange my favorites to my heart's content. The Humax has a ton of storage space, as long as you don't record in the highest quality. You need that high quality for action-packed shows like sports (football and basketball, Nascar; baseball, not so much) or anything with a lot of movement. The lesser quality recordings take up less space but also are noticeably glitchier, more like video tape. My favorite feature of the Humax Tivo is the DVD recorder. I can easily tape a whole season of cooking shows and record them to a DVD, especially since I don't need the best quality for a cooking show. I can fit at least 12 half-hour cooking shows on one DVD at decent quality, which is about the equivalent of a six-hour videotape at slowest speed. I don't know what I'll do when my Humax gives up the ghost and I can't get another, because I don't know if they make the new ones with DVD recorders. It's so handy, I love it. I would probably look for a used, refurbished one. Humax also has excellent customer service for those times when I had a question, or the rare times when I had a problem. I will stick with Humax for my Tivo needs. The only drawback to my Humax is the inability to record two shows at once. For that, you'll need two Tivo recorders or one DirecTV Tivo recorder. (I have one of those as well, and it works great, just can't save the shows to DVD.)
