HP dvd1040 with Lightscribe technology is an external drive. It is DVD multi recorder RDL. It's an RW DVD-RDL and Compact disc rewritable with ultra speed. Being an external it gives you the ability to keep it when and if you move on to another computer or if you need to do some work else where it's good for travelling. It is very quick and simple to use with plug and play reactions. you can also connect a camera to it and put the pics directly onto disc instead of midway onto your computer. Lightscribe technology is great as there is no need for labels to center onto your disc which can also cause problems into any of your machines if the papers tear or come up. After you burn your disc you would flip it and burn the title on the LIGHTSCRIBE discs. You can use any type of dvd or cd within the machine, however if you're going to use Lightscribe on the cover of the disc then it has to be a lightscribe disc or compatable. The machine comes with a stand so that it could stand up right or lay flat. I choose upright for room and convenience.
