The Boxee Box, an impressive media streamer

4

I was looking for a device to get my large movie collection (in a variety of formats) from my computer onto a television.  The Boxee Box fit the bill on paper, so I decided to give it a try.  The Box is designed to serve two main purposes: to play media from a variety of internet sources (YouTube, Vudu, Pandora), as well as to stream one's local media.  As an internet streamer, I found the box to be sufficient enough.  The remote has a qwerty keyboard on its opposite side, making it easy to find content online (searching for a video on YouTube, for example).  With that said, the main reason I purchased to box was to stream my own content, and the box shines at doing just that.  It can handle any format that I've been able to throw at it (and I've thrown a lot).  Everything from lossless audio tracks (FLAC) to 8 GB MKV movies played without hiccup over the wireless N connection.  Overall, I am very satisfied with the box.

Boxee Box, Great for Local Media

4

I was discussing media streamers with a friend a couple months ago, and to my surprise come Christmas time said friend purchased me a Boxee Box by D Link. The general premise is that the device connects to your television and streams media from your local library as well as the internet to your TV. I use it mainly for local media, and it supports any and every file type imaginable. This is great for streaming large files as well. The only downside is that your local source (computer) must always be on when streaming content. I have a decent network and a Wireless G network and have no problems with playback issues. Another feature of the device is internet media. While I do not use it too much for this purpose, it is great for watching a movie on Netflix or Youtube or even browsing the web on the built in web browser (with flash). The remote is also great, having a QWERT keyboard on the back that allows for easy searching of media. Overall, I am very happy with it.

Cut the cable with a Boxee Box

4

We researched for a way to cut the cable, so that we would only need internet access at our house, but still watch the few shows that we liked to follow.  For a while we had been using a laptop and sitting on the couch, watching via the major network websites.  This worked, but my laptop was used for work, so when I was out, my wife was locked to the desktop in the office at home. We looked into the google tv, and eventually came across the boxee box.  This box is quite amazing.  It does have its drawbacks, but it is still a brand new product. The box plays most videos flawlessly.  It can reach quite a few websites to watch videos easily.  It was a shame when almost all the major networks decided to block content to the boxee box.  A few were left accessible, and you can watch videos from their site via the webkit browser on the box.  The networks do need to work on a redesign of their sites to work with these types of devices though, since it is a bit cumbersome to watch a video as easily as flipping through channels on a tv. The box plays local content perfectly.  The apps for it are quite impressive, but they do need some work done yet. Overall the boxee box is a huge step in the right direction.  It does still need some work, and current content providers need to start embracing this type of device, but it has a great start so far.  The boxee box was designed well to last and keep up with things for a while.

Boxing Day...

4

So my wife went above and beyond once again for her husband at XMAS. She surprised me with a Boxee. I didn't really know much about this product by d-link. My only familarity with it was it was just announced that the NHL gamecenter had developed an app so you can stream hockey games in glorious 1080p on your tv. This was an extremely important development for a guy like me who is watching hockey on my pc in my bedroom where my 1 year daughter is trying to sleep in her crib. The potential of this app and boxee in general is mind boggling. Not only am I watching hockey on my 42" in my LR thanks to Boxee, I can stream netflix movies, watch youtube videos, sync with my facebook account and view content that my from post on their pages and watch all my favorite tv shows for free without paying pay cable premiums!!! I haven't fully immersed myself in all the apps and the potential of the boxee, but the awesome gift has left me no choice by to offically call my Christmas holiday BOXING DAY from now on!!!

Boxee has so many great features and a few bugs that need work

4

I bought the boxee for my husband so that he wouldn't have to hide out in our bedroom to watch his NHL Gamecenter on his computer. Every day we find more things that we can do with the boxee. We are even considering canceling our ridiculously expensive cable package and just using the boxee for all tv viewing. My husband loves watching his hockey on the big screen tv in our living room. The only problem that he has with it is that it looks like it should let you pause or rewind what you are watching and that feature does not yet seem available. My toddler also loves watching various Elmo videos on the YouTube App that the boxee comes with. So far we have not found any additional expenses to use the boxee- which is great! There are hundred of television shows that can be watched on boxee for free. You can also stream music from Pandora on boxee. We usually don't have any problem using a feature when it is a preloaded application. We do have a problem when we try to type in a website. It is a great thing to buy for any techie!
