I LOVE this can opener. It works differently than traditional can openers in that there is no sharp edge. It cuts the lid off of cans in a way that allows you to put the lid of the can back on and keep using the can because there are no sharp edges. I've used this opener for years on many different can types with no issues. I saved the empty can and lid from a few cans of tuna and now I use that empty can to keep my partial cans of cat food the fridge. This works so much better than those plastic lids for cat food. The can closes tightly and I can wash the cans out in the dishwasher. I saved the empty can and lid from tomato juice to keep under my sink for compost. This can approach minimizes any smell. I think it's likely that you'll be, for example, opening up soup cans during power outages, so I think every household should have at least one manual can opener and this is the one to have. It did take me a little time to learn how to use this can opener. I think the first time I used it, I didn't realize the lid had been cut off and I had to lift it off. Once you figure out how to use this, its easy to use.

This was a gift sent to me from my older sister who knows I love uniquely designed things , that I love to cook , I spend a lot of time in my kitchen and my kitchen appliances have a black theme going on. So I was happy to receive it and see the OXO name on it and I have been even happier since using it. It's a great can opener. Ease of Cleaning The ease of cleaning is perfect. It's parts barely come in contact with the cans that it opens and as well as the way that it's designed and the particular kind of plastic as well as it's color makes it stay brand new looking and clean. Durability The durability of this can opener is wonderful. It has not taken on any scratches or scrapes from being dropped or thrown into my kitchen drawer carelessly nor has it's mechanism diminished in any way. Design I love the look and design of this can opener , it's very unique. Aside of that, the way it opens cans is different than most can openers as it opens them from the side and neither the can or the lid has any sharp edges remaining.It also has a griper on it to remove the lid after it comes off.

Buy It! Do not get frustrated trying to learn to use it if their is no one available to show you the first time. I had to figure it out myself, but I never saw anyone I taught that required any more than one lesson. Ease of Cleaning Little to get dirty since it does not actually contact any foodstuffs during use. Love the way the cans are "resealable." Durability I bought my first quite a few years ago and have had to replace it after many a can. Design What can you say? No sharp edges and the can is virtually resealable.

OK, you think I would learn, though OXO is a good solid brand, that make a multitude of sturdy products, they just don't seem to realize, that big is not always better. I have explained about myself before, I am a partial amputee (missing parts of 5 fingers) and have limited gripping ability and small hands..OXO aims toward being a good product with easy to hold grips... that is if you have medium sized hands and know disabilities. This can opener is no exception. It really is a must have for people who want  a safe can-opening experience. The smooth edge it creates is superb. And I have no fear that this can opener's handles will ever break. It really does have a great, solid construction. But anyone who has small hands might have a hard time getting a good grip on this. What good is it if you can't use it? I find myself slipping about the countertop, just trying to chase the can around and get a good bite going and the turning process going on. I think I should have just splurged and got an electric can opener that did the same smooth edge cut. I do have to agai, give props to their solid construction, but for us small-handed/disabled brethren, this product is a no.   Design I may have trouble with it, as a partial finger amputee, but my husband's arthritic fingers like this.

We all use can openers. They are the go to item we all need in the kitchen. I need something reliable and durable. I do love that this can opener works and eliminates sharp edges...at least until it gets some wear on it. This is a weakness in this particular design. It will fail without warning, and then you are stuck with prying off a lid that is half cut and half not and...oh, what a mess. I suggest you buy two and then, if one fails, you can use the second one until you get a replacement/backup can opener. When it works, it is great. When it doesn't, it is a nightmare. I don't like the top turn feature. I like the side turn feature. I also am disappointed that OXO would not have a soft grip for this can opener. Hard plastic....really? Come on OXO..I count on you and your company to give my old hands a break in the kitchen.

I got this as a replacement for my old rusing can opener, and while I was a bit skeptical at first, the sales lady talked me in to this new type. It took a bit of getting used to, but now I really love it! It takes the lids of cans off without cutting the metal at all, which makes it much more safe for my kids to use (and myself, since I have cut myself on a fair few can lids too). I also like the fact that it has a little clamp on the side, so that I can easily grab the lid after it has been cut off and place it in the trash can. Not that it's a bit deal, but it does make it so I don't get stuff on the counters or my hands very often. The only compaint I've had so far is the fact that others who come to my house don't know how to use it, but this is usually remedied by the fact that I show them quickly and they end up loving it! In all I don't think I'll ever buy a different type of can opener again!

I had no clue smooth edge can openers existed, but I'm so glad they do! This can opener is great. I own several **oxo** products, and I picked this can opener out because of their good reputation. To be honest, I didn't even really know that it was a smooth edge can opener until I used it the first time. I was amazed at how smooth the lid was when it came off the can. Traditional can openers can leave sharp edges on the lid and the can. We keep a recycling container in our house and have small children, and the thought of one of them hurting themselves on a can is scary. I'm glad I don't have to worry about it! This can opener is a little bulky, but the grip is comfortable and I find it easy to use. My hand doesn't hurt from using the handle. I have had to replace it once, but I cook a lot, and open a lot of cans. Quite frankly, I'd buy one every three years if I had to, because I like it so much.

The OXO Smooth Edge can opener is wonderful. We've had and used ours for a year now and it is still going strong! After we used the old fashioned style can opener for years, we were fed up and decided to go a different route! We had used the smooth edge type of can openers at a family members house and were very impressed. The only part that wasn't so impressive is the cost of some of them! I guess I'm cheap! The OXO can opener was reasonably priced in my opinion and has been nothing but worth every penny we paid for it! If something ever happens to it, we will definitely purchase another as we've been quite satisfied with most of our other OXO products! The Smooth edge can opener has been a life saver, the can lid no longer falls into the can which is fantastic as you have no idea what types of germs could be all over the lid that fell into your food!! It has also saved us from cut fingers as a regular can opener can leave sharp jagged edges. I'm thrilled with it!

What I like best about the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener is that it leaves, just like the same says, a nice, smooth edge on the lid of the can. This means it's safe for kids to use, and even for adults that tend to be more accident-prone. You don't have to worry too much about the edge being safe, though, becuase you almost never have to do that annoying thing where you twist the lid off the can. That's because the can opener works well, so the lid almost always comes all the way off. This is a huge change from a regular can opener, and it's still cheap. The only thing i don't like about it is it's kind of big, and it has this hollow area that sometimes ends up dirty when it comes out of the dishwasher. Maybe if you clean it by hand, or have a better dishwasher than me, you won't ahve to worry about it. But we've been using this for a while and still love it. It's easy to use and still works great.

I purchased this OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener after my other smooth edge can opener's handle broke.  I had it for three weeks and it broke, the springs popped out and there was no fixing it.  I was greatly disappointed!  I love smooth edge can openers, especially having young children who help in the kitchen.  We do use a can opener quite often, but during these three weeks we were not using it excessively.  I did find it more difficult to use than my other can opener.  It is on the bulkier side, taking up a lot of room in my utensil drawer.  The handle was difficult to turn, I don't feel that it is near as well made as other OXO products I have used in the past.  Definately save your money and do more research if you are looking for a smooth edge can opener.  There are others out there that last longer and do exactly what a smooth edge can opener should do.  These are on the more expensive side also.
