Great concept but this can opener is too bulky to be effective

3

I am a huge fan of OXO products so I thought I would try their can opener when my old one broke. The concept behind the design of this can opener is a great one. It is important to have a good grip on both the handle portion and the mechanism to turn the blade when using a can opener. The OXO Good Grips Can Opener is designed with both of these features in mind. The problem that I encountered when trying to use this can opener is that the material on the handles and the turning mechanism is very bulky and it makes the can opener very difficult to use. I find that it is hard to keep a steady grip on the handles and even harder to turn the mechanism to make the blade move around the top of the can. As a result, the can opener often slips and I find that I have to reposition the blade several times just to open one can. Once I can get the blade to run the whole way around the can, I am impressed that the can opener does not leave sharp edges. This is a very important feature. I like the concept of this can opener and its performance when I can get it to work. I just wish it was less bulky!

OXO Good Grips Can Opener

This is a very durable can opener with easy to handle comfortable grips. OXO Good Grips Can Opener makes opening up cans hassle free. The sharp teeth and beveled blade cuts into can lids with ease. The large knobs and comfortable non slip grips prevent my hands from cramping up and causing injury to my wrist. The design of this can opener is attractive and goes well with my other kitchen utensils. The only complaint I have is I notice that the screws are starting to rust. Overall I am pleased with this product and it does work very well.

can opener material too soft

1

can opener pulling gear too soft, wears out quickly . The rolling pressure design is very good compared to a cutter blade that drags into the metal, causing metal shavings to get into the food. The drive that turns the can is of poor quality as the teeth on the drive gear slips and wears out on the first few times used.

Great can opener for every day use.

I used to have one of the automatic can openers but I didn't like it at all, so I decided to revert back to a traditional one. The main feature I was looking for was handles that were comfortable to allow a good grip. This can opener definitely had that feature. Not only are the handles comfortable, the turning knob is also big and convenient. I definitely prefer a traditional can opener over an automatic one and I don't think I'll ever go back to the automatic ones. I think you have much more control over opening a can with a traditional opener. Ease of Cleaning It's so much easier to clean a traditional can opener versus a big, bulky, automatic one. Durability I use this OXO can opener at least a few times a day, and it's still working perfectly fine after a year. Design The handles offer both comfortability and a good grip. The turning knob is nice and big so that it's easy to turn. The round wheel that is used to puncture a hole in the can also works great. Overall, the design is very efficient.

Handy can opener

I have owned and used my share of crappy can openers--you know the kind: the skinny handles, the unpadded turning wheel. The kind that always skips little parts of the top of the can and you have to go around the edges more than once, and it gets rusty, and it's nearly impossible to turn... but I digress. This can opener, the OXO good grips model, is not one of those. It has thick, ergonomic handles with a turning wheel on the side that turns smoothly and cuts through the can lid with relative ease. The edges of the lid are somewhat sharp, so mind that your fingers don't get caught between the lid and the can. My husband and I have had this can opener for about four years, and it is still going strong. We have several OXO products, and, for the most part, they are high quality, ergonomic, easy to use, and long-lasting. It is a brand I have come to trust, and I was not disappointed in regards to this can opener.

It's going to break if you use it heavily...

So I move into my new house and I find that I need a new can opener. I run out and grab this one. For a few months, my can opener and I get along famously. It helps me open cans of beans and tomatoes for chili. It was there to open cans of evaporated milk for fudge. It saw me through tomato paste cans for soup. Then it happened, the thing broke on me after only a few months. It punched holes in the cans like morse code, but wouldn't open them. Then it didn't even do that. I threw it away and thought it might just be that one. I bought another of the same kind, and after a lovely spring together, the same thing happened. I don't know what this can opener is made of or why it keeps breaking on me, but I won't buy a third one. It's not even like I'm some can opening monster. I use a can opener about 4 times a week. Looking at it after it broke, the gears seem to have stopped working with each other. I don't know why. This is the first can opener that's done this to me.

It's a little bulky

This product does what is supposed to do, but I have a tendency to use my other can opener. Although this is very smoothly opens the cans, I struggle with the size of the turner. I have smaller hands and the turner feels a little too big and awkward for me. Ease of Cleaning This is dishwasher safe, so it is very easy to toss in the silverware holder if it needs cleaning. Durability The can opener seems very solid. So far I have had no difficulty with the product. Design I appreciate the black coloring so it matches the rest of my kitchenware.

Smooth opening

Just received this for christmas and I love it. The design is very nice. It will only open as far as you need to put it on the can to open. That means no more flopping around. It is very easy to start the opening of the can and it just moves very smoothly. The handle is very comfortable. If you are in the market for a new can opener then this is one that I suggest. This also has a bottle opener at the top of the can opener. Ease of Cleaning I just quickly hand wash this and let it try to maintain the integrity of the gears. Design Looks nice and feels great.

Easy to use and comfortable in my hand

Once again, OXO has made an easy to use kitchen product. Ease of Cleaning I clean this every time I use it with soap and water. While any manual can opener is had to get behind the blade, this one is just as hard. One good thing is it can be placed in the dishwasher when need be. Durability I've had this for about a year and it still looks and works like new. Design I like the design of this OXO Good Grips Can Opener. It is easy to use and fits very comfortably in my hand. It locks down during use and the lock down button is easy to release, and it holds in place and does not slip while opening a can. It is smooth while turning and is quite easy to turn as well.
