OXO Good Grips Jar Opener: Another better & smarter OXO tool

5

Having always been the man of the house, difficult jars have always been passed in my direction for opening. No complaints here, but being left handed and suffering irreversible nerve damage that affects my fine motor skills of my left hand, I find that I have to struggle at a task that was once so simple for me. The **OXO Good Grips Jar Opener** provides me with the ideal tool to open virtually any bottle or jar since by its design, no fine motor skills are needed. Ease of Cleaning The **OXO Good Grips Jar Opener** seldom needs cleaning, but when it does it can be easily rinsed or when really messy be safely washed in the dishwasher. Durability The simple design of the **OXO Good Grips Jar Opener** and the typical OXO quality of construction make this an extremely durable gadget. And, in the event that you can find a way to destroy it, the **OXO Good Grips Jar Opener** is covered by OXO's Lifetime Warranty. Design Like most OXO cooking tools, the **OXO Good Grips Jar Opener** is exquisite in its simplicity. This 8.5" opener features the usual comfort grip that connects to the graduated toothed "V" that grips jar lids up to about 4" in diameter. Once gripped, all that's needed is a bit of hand torque in a counter clockwise direction. I find that as long as my right hand (the one holding the jar) is dry, I can easily open any jar with a minimum of effort. Even better, I've convinced my wife and daughter that they can too!

Actually works, easy to use, & no counter space need

I got this as a gift and wasn't sure I'd ever use it, but we do. IT gets the lids off if you can't and it doesn't take up much room. No bulky product on your counter top. Never had any problems using it. I was suprised how much I actually like this product. Great gift

I wish I could count on this more.

I love OXO products and own many of them.  I bought this to help with my aging hands and the difficulties I have been having getting jars opened.  Unfortunately, it has not worked as I'd hoped.  I find it slips frequently, and jamming it onto the lid to get it to catch in the first place is a hit-or-miss proposition.  When it works -- when everything gets lined up and it catches without slipping -- it's excellent.  But it slips often enough that I just don't rely on it as I'd hoped to be able to.  Mixed reaction.

great for opening most bottles and jars--a necessity

4

There are always some jars and bottles that are just impossible to open. I have banged jars upside down on the floor over the years and never broken a jar. However, this is not the best method. I also had a jar opener that was great, but it was hard to hold the handles together and turn at the same time. It was impossible for children or handicapped persons to use. This design works much better and with much less effort and less needed dexterity. There are however, a few very large jars that it is hard or impossible to open with this tool. But certainly for ninety percent of jars and bottles--some juice drinks especially--this is a fantastic tool. It is easy to use as well. This gets more workout than any tool in my kitchen.

Works....sometimes....durability issues aplenty: OXO Jar Opener

3

Slipping the jaws of this opener into a jar sometimes can be tricky, especially on narrow lids, or odd-sized lids.  The design of the opener is fine, however there needs to be some revamp/overhaul on this design to accomodate the aforementioned lid sizes. I have been using this opener for the past 2 years and guess what?  I had to already go through 1, because of the lack of durability in the plastic.  My first one cracked and luckily OXO sent me a replacement (for which I give an extra point to their customer service for being outstanding).  However, the replacement is nearly identical, if not identical to the one that broke, so I can foresee having to replace this one in the near future. That being said, if you are willing to use this daintily, I am sure that this tool will serve you well for a long time.  It is much better than other solutions and does not require as much force (saving your wrists/hands if you have arthritis!) as other openers.

Good for the kitchen and under the car hood

I love this tool.  I have really weak wrists and not much arm body strength. The OXO Good Grips Jar Opener is easy to slide over a lid and opens it with good ease. It takes a little strength but not too much. It is great for kids, the elderly, those with arthritis.  I also found it "does the trick" to get caps off under the hood of your car. So if you need to change the antifreeze, add washer fluid, or have a stubborn lid when you need to add oil, this tool will easily open.  The bad part is....these are hard to find.  I have seen these in very few stores, so you may want to order it online. Stores that I have found this in have usually been smaller specialty stores, such as kitchen stores, small department stores like Bealls, and some hardware stores. Rather than waste your gas and time, just pick up the phone and call to find a store close to you that carries OXO kitchen tool products. You definintely will like this tool.

Can't live without it!

This is one product that has really been a life saver in the kitchen.  I live alone and have difficulty opening jars due to arthritis.  This has been so helpful I've even given it as a gift to several of my friends and family as part of a "I can't live without this" gift bag.  Most of the items I include are OXO brand.  If it is from OXO I will always splurge and get it, I've never been disappointed.

Best jar opener I've ever tried

I use this jar opener nearly every day and have had it for years - more than five. It works well on bottle tops as well and even young children can work it. The handle is large and easy to grasp making it an excellent tool for people with weak or arthritic hands.
