I needed a refrigerator with a bottom freezer. As we age, my husband and I have a lot of difficulty seeing to the back of the bottom shelf of our old refrigerator, and the produce drawers were hard to open and close. The vegetables and fruits quickly spoiled, and leftovers were always getting lost in the back to turn green and fuzzy. We found a great deal on this Maytag with a bottom freezer and French doors. It came with an icemaker which we removed because we did not want the expense of plumbing it. My husband had real reservations about the French doors because he felt we would lose storage space in the doors. We did lose some. However, it saves so much clearance space in the kitchen that more than makes up for that. It is really so much less bulky than the big solid door! The produce drawers are easy to operate, and the ventilation controls really work well. The produce stays fresh a long time. There is a long shallow meat drawer at the bottom that is very attractive, and keeps meat and cheese very well. There is no egg storage in this one to waste space, which is good becase you're suppose to keep eggs in the carton for proper storage. There is a wire shelf hanging below one of the glass shelves that is meant for beverage cans. We don't use this for cans, and started to remove it, but found it is wonderful for deli boxes and small containers of leftovers and really saves shelf space. The bottom freezer drawer means that everything in the fridge is at a visible level. The freezer has a double wire drawer system that keeps everything accessible. I am constantly astonished at how much longer food stays fresh, how quiet the motor runs, and how infrequently it runs even in this very hot summer weather. This Maytag refrigerator is Energy Star rated. I'm looking forward to seeing what changes are on our next electric bill.
