We live in the high desert of Utah, and if we did not water our yards, then nothing would grow. But high desert also means that spring and early summer have hot days and cold nights. We can get freezes late into the spring. So even though we have built in sprinklers, we usually do not begin using them until we are pretty sure that it will not freeze hard enough to break the lines. So for a month or two, we will water our yard with a hose, and this John Deere traveling sprinkler is the best one I have used. Most sprinklers simply sit in one spot and need to be moved every ten or fifteen minutes. But this one moves up the line of the hose, allowing it to cover a much larger area at once. It can be adjusted to move at a different rate, depending how long you want an area to receive water. The spinning piece that actually spreads water has occasionally gotten out of line, but I was able to fix it pretty easily. It will only follow the line of the hose, so you can't just set it and forget it while it does the entire yard. But it does require far less movement than a regular hose sprinkler, and it is my favorite to use.
