I have used TurboTax for several years in order to prepare my taxes, and I have always found it extremely helpful. The program is developed by reliable tax professionals who know how to deal with many of the different issues that come up with taxes. Because of my job situation, we have some unique tax situations that are rather uncommon. Even some professional accountants have struggled with helping with these types of situations simply because they are very uncommon and the accountants have not dealt with them before. But TurboTax has included this specific situations in the program, and it is very good at walking through everything on my taxes, including these difficult situations. The amount refunded (or owed) is always very clear, and they give helpful hints along the way to know what the best think to use can be (such as using standard deduction or itemizing). The two downsides that I have are more inconveniences than major problems. First, e-filing is free for federal taxes, but costs extra money for state taxes. It would be nice if both of these were free. Second, the live chat for questions is helpful, but the wait times can be extremely long, even early in the tax season.
