I am a girl who, when my hair is allowed to air dry, has incredibly frizzy hair that doesn't qualify as a curl, a pretty wave, or straight.  It's more of just a poof!  Therefore, I straighten my hair every single day.  Naturally, as I was rushing to meet my friends, my straightener died.  In a panic I called my friend who said I could go to her house to use her Chi Straightener.  I went, & of course I was pleased with the results.  The next day I started my online search to see where I can get the best deal on a Chi of my own. Upon searching, I stumbled upon the **GVP Black Ceramic Flat Iron **from Sally's Beauty Supply store and I started reading the reviews.  Out of the 33 reviews that were listed, this straightener earned over 4 out of 5 stars.  The negative reviews were about the stiff cord it comes with - if you set it down & the swivel cord isn't positioned right, it tips over at first.  Now that I've had this for a bit, I have noticed it is loosening up & isn't that much of an issue anymore.  I bought it since it was MUCH cheaper than the Chi & figured I could always return it if I didn't get the results I desired.  I've been using it every day now & I must say that once this one dies I will be replacing it with the same exact product.  I am very happy with this & I highly recommend it to anyone.  It has a range of heat settings,  a 1 inch plate (which gets nice & close to the head, but doesn't take any longer to do your hair) & a guard so it is nearly impossible to burn yourself.    UPDATE: It has now been almost a year since I've written this review & I have come back to increase my star rating from a 4 to a 5. I've used this straightener between 5 - 7 days each week & it has never failed me & continues to go strong!  When it does eventually stop working, I WILL be buying the same product!  I hope this helps!! UPDATE: It has now been 2 & 1/2 years with the same straightener!! Still going strong & still works just as good as when I first got it (despite being dropped a billion times)! I've used this product for years! It last years! I've used more than of this brands products and have not been let down! It's one of my holy grails! Effectiveness I have very course wavy, thick, hair. This straightener does the job by far! It also enhances the shine and softness! Durability Haha I've dropped this flat iron so many times! Fortunely, all of it stays in tact!

I'm a professional hair stylist and when it comes down to it clients do not want to spend hundreds on irons to create what I do behind the chair. This iron finishes the hair the same as the CHI and in my opinion is better because of the fact that you can change the temp setting. Now for coarse thick hair you've heard "you need the CHI" but this iron does the same thing because of how hot it gets. Keep in mind you can use a low setting for fine thin hair and it will work for you too! Unlike the CHI that is just one heat setting. Perfect for a family household of different hair types!

I actually had this product and to be honest it does flatten out your hair but to stay flat for more than two days you have to re do it or to buy a hair product with it. Also it works best for those that their hair is not thick since the GVP product is very thin and the voltage is not that high so it will take few times to actually get it how you want it.

I love this flat iron and I have been using my pink one for about five years with no problems. I have really thick curly hair that is a burden to flat iron and I think I had tried just about every product on the market to manage it before I bought this one. My hair used to be really long and it would take hours to wash/dry and then I would have to flat iron it. Fortunately this product made my job easier because I didn't have to keep going over my hair to get it straight. One swipe and it was straight. The one inch is good to have because now that my hair is short I can still use it. The only problem is my niece kept taking my flat iron because it works so well, so I had to buy her one of her own for Christmas.

Love, love , love this iron! It heats up quickly and to a very high heat. It doesn't take very long to flat iron my hair. I have had it a long time. I have dropped it many times, had stuff melt on it and it's still going strong. I've never had a problem either with getting my hair caught in it.

After going to a beauty shop to have my hair restyled almost 2 years ago it was suggested by my hair stylist to try a flat iron. My hair has always been naturally curly to the extent that it gets frizzy, wavy and just generally bushy looking. My new hair stylist gave me a style which in the past without a flat iron I could never have worn. It was a Bob. In other words my hair was cut all one length. I was told to go to Sally's Beauty shop and purchase their generic brand called GVP which stands for Generic Value Product. On arriving at Sally's Beauty Shop (this is a franchise) I asked about there Generic Value Product flat iron. The girl at Sally's explained that this flat iron is very comparable to the Chi brand flat iron. Well, of course I had never used the Chi brand but I knew it was a pricey line.  I purchased this flat iron for about a third of what a Chi brand would have cost me. I couldn't be happier with the results. The directions tell you to use on the lowest tempature that is effective on your type of hair. I find that using it on 370 is perfect for me. The numbers start at 140 and then go to 230, 300, 370, and the last setting is 410. The best thing to do is to experiment with it to get the right tempature for your type of hair. My hair is best described as naturally curly with tendency to get very wavy, frizzy and bushy when in humid wheather. Although the conditions don't have to be humid to cause my hair to have any of those fine features. As a young girl growing up I would put towels on my head just to pretend my hair was straight. Getting back to this flat iron I must say that it is very effective in controlling all of the wavy, bushy and frizziness. I have let my hair air dry and then used the flat iron or brushed it with a big round brush first and then used the flat iron. I have found both methods to work but the big round brush first works the best.

    OK... so I was doing a little research trying to find a flat iron. My husband caught on and decided to get me one as a gift...but in doing so decided to make the decision of which one to purchase. Guys don't have a clue as to what is a "good" brand. But boy, I do have to say he did a job well done.     After some deliberation he decided on the GVP hair straightener from Sally Beauty Supply. On the box it says "compare to CHI". If you are a flat iron owner or even a female you all know about CHI and the hefty price tag.     This does as it said and exceeded my expectations while costing less than half the cost of it's competitor.My sister-in-law has this pricey twin but does not sing it's praise.    The GVP heats up very quickly and stays that way. And boy, does it get hot. Despite the high heat level this flat iron does not dry out your hair. It leaves it shiny and healthy-looking.

I wasn't sure about spending the money on this flat iron as it was a little pricey. My mom and sisters had one so I tried it out..........then ran right out and bought my own. I tried the CHi and thought that the GVP did a better job! I have naturally curly hair and it does a fantastic job! I don't know what I would do without it.
