The Eureka Powerline 2905A Upright Vacuum is a real workhorse.  It has a very strong 12 amp motor that has kept my carpeting looking like new.  It even vacuums pet hair relatively easily once you've figured out what carpet height setting to use for your particular carpet or flooring.  There are some useful attachments, like the crevice tool for getting at the baseboards and around the refrigerator.  Occasionally, I find that pet hair won't vacuum up from my linoleum tile floors due to static cling, so I use the attachments instead to get at the corners. The bag is easy to replace and easy to find at major stores.  The cord is about 30 feet long, so it'll get you around several rooms before you need to plug into a different outlet.  It also has a HEPA filter to catch dust, pet dander and allergens. The only drawback is that the vacuum is a bit heavy at almost fifteen pounds, so it can be a bit of an annoyance to carry up and down stairs.
