good device

In fact, I did not use the device before but on the basis of what I saw from the specifications, it is a good device to use.

Great computer-very durable

5

I bought my Dell D830 lattitude laptop computer almost three years ago and have never had to have it serviced.  It runs quick and has alot of storage space and works perfectly for my professional and personal use.  I have been told that laptops do not last as long as desktop computers but I carry it back and forth to work everyday in a laptop backpack and it has held up very well.  My husband has had different brand laptops and his never seem to last quite as long as my dell lattitudes.  I like the professional lattitudes better than the non-professional Dells because I think they are built to be a little bit tougher.  My last Dell lattitude lasted 5 years which is long for a laptop and it was the keyboard that gave out not the hard drive or anything like that.  I probably could have had it fixed but it was time for an upgrade and I have not been disappointed.  The keys are very quiet to type on and easy to find.  I don't like laptops that have keyboards that are too small or you have to bang to type out words.

Latitude D820 is a powerhorse

I have been a fan of Dell laptops for several years, the Lattitude D820 has won my vote again. I love the machine and have had no real problems with it.  My next machine will have a smaller screen.  I don't like that many times the entire landscape is not used and the font size is too small. I do enjoy the performance, can run multiple apps without noticing degrade in performance. I have had to replace the battery, they are expensive and only have an estimated 1 year life.

Adequate, but Not Ideal

3

This laptop is issued to me by my employer, and I am glad I didn't have to spend money on it. It is generally adequate for business purposes, because it has a large enough hard drive, and it usually runs smoothly on a normal day. However, there have been multiple issues with it. The first problem was that the USB ports don't work. They do not recognize simple plug-and-play devices like a dumb mouse or a USB thumb drive. The technical support guys re-imaged the machine (and I had to reinstall all my programs) and the USB ports only recognize 3 specific USB devices (the original mouse, a small capacity thumb drive, and my SD card reader). I cannot use a USB webcam, a USB printer, or anything else USB. This laptop is relatively new to me (under 2 years) but the processor already hypes up to 100% and locks up the laptop from time to time. This is a work machine and I hardly have any personal program, play any game, or download any internet plug-ins. So I cannot understand what's eating the memory. There are numerous times when I just killed it by holding down the power button because I had been waiting for too long for the programs to come back. In terms of battery life, D830 gives me about 6 hours, which is pretty decent when I have to work off site for the entire day. However, the older Dell models actually have longer battery life (7 hours), so this is still a step-down for me. I would not recommend this for personal use, especially if you have to spend your own money on it. Even for businesses, I would not recommend you to issue this laptop to your employees.

D830: A true gamble

2

My company recently upgraded all it's employees to new Dell PCs. I recieved a D830 laptop. Initially I was very happy, the new PC was very fast and useful; However that soon passed. Merely 1-2 weeks after revieving the laptop, my hard drive would constantly fail to post (load system). I discovered that this only happened when the system was cold (if I'd brought it home in my car). The solution was to let it reach room temperature before starting it. (totally unacceptable). Even after it was warm, the drive would still click away, likely a damaged head. Furthermore, my network connections (exchange server, VPN, etc...) have been terrible. My old PC was able to hold network connections like a champ, but this new one drops them all the time. (this may be partially our tech guys) Several of my co-workers have had similar issues, along with crappy ram (blue screens).   This laptop is a gamble, 6 out of 8 people on my team had major issues with this laptop, pretty crappy odds. :(

A user freindly unit

I use this laptop daliy for my work.  It is a good home base and so far I have had no problems with it crashing. If I had a negitive towards this unit I would say that it needs more USB ports. But that Is just me.. In my line of work I am doing design work and so I need to add an external mouse, but that is just for drawings. When I have used this laptop without the mouse it has worked ok, but it is too sensitive when you are doing detailed drawings, even with it set to its least sensitive.  The battery life is good,nearly 4 hours of continuous use, alot better than the last laptop I used, which would only give you 1.5 hours of you were lucky.  Overall  I am happy with the Dell Latitude D830, and would recommend it to anyone.

Solid performer -- middle of the pack laptop

4

This laptop is one that was provided for me at work.  It does the job well and although it isn't the fastest or lightest around, it works well and is easy work on.  I have the Centrino powered machine, which I know the Core Duo version is much faster, but I don't have any complaints about speed and power. The battery life is execellent as I often get 4 hours of usage from one charge!Screen is nice size, and the resolution can be "cranked up" to 1680x1050!  There are plenty of ports on this laptop including a IEEE 1394 (firewire) and four USB connections, but only a PCMCIA slot (single height).Mine included a DVD writer, which I'm not sure if it is standard with this model, but I know most new laptops include one anyway. If you need a decent performing laptop for a fair price, I think you can't go wrong with Dell's Latitude lineup, and particularly, the D830 is a good deal.

Good hard working machine

The Dell latitude is a well rounded machine that bigs you a decent amount of bang for your buck.  The machine is smooth running but slightly bulkier than other models I have used.  Also, some of the hardware doesn't work quite as well as expected, but still has the power to accomplish most of my tasks without difficulty.  The biggest problem I have is when doing any sort of graphic design which slows the computer considerably.  Overall, it's a sturdy machine.

One of the top laptops in this class

4

When choosing a laptop you must make certain trade offs, the Latitude D830 maximizes those trade offs to offer a powerful and fast laptop with excellent battery life and a large, easy to use display.  The laptop is bigger than some, and probably close to 8 lbs with the battery, but for a laptop with this size of screen, that is pretty much to be expected.Battery life has consistently been over 5 hours with a full charge.  Dell support sucks, but you should know that going in and I'm reviewing the actual laptop here, not Dell support.  Luckily, with this laptop, I have not yet needed Dell tech support or warranty support.

Sturdy, seemingly OK

4

I purchased this laptop last week and so far, so good.  I like the big screen and it feels quite sturdy.  I had a DELL Latitude previously and it was a lemon, I had to put a new mother board in it and a new screen.  Both were covered by DELL and the service was quite good to have it repaired each time.  I got to someone quickly and I was able to resolve the issue in little time.  The only downside of this laptop is that it is large and a bit cumbersome.  I carry my laptop with me everywhere, so it tends to be a shoulder killer.  I knew this going in to the purchase because I like a big screen.  One has to decide which is more important, the big screen or the light weight.  This is my first Intel Core 2 Duo computer and it is lightning fast. I also dislike very much that Dell has decided to sell their product through WalMart.  I imagine that things will get worse for this company because of this.  I certainly hope DELL is able to maintain its high quality service in partnership with WalMart.
