One of the most conterversial lenses offered by Canon. I have owned three copies of this lens over the period of 5 years and each of them performed perfectly. Producing sharp image even wide open. I have test my current copy with the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L lens and the two lenses produced images that were similar in sharpness and contrast. I duely sold my 400mm prime lens. This lens along with the 17-40 and 24-105 complete the entire zoom range required for any normal travel photography with out breaking your back and fits nicely into any medium sized camera bag.

I have owned the Canon EF 100-400 IS USM lens for a couple years now, and it is a great lens for zooming in real close, especially for wildlife. I started out with a 70-300 IS zoom lens, and there is just no comparing this lens to the 100-400 lens. I photograph quite a bit of wildlife, and have even travelled to do so. With this lens, it really brings the animals in close. And it takes tack sharp photos, even zoomed all the way out. The Canon EF 100-400 lens is a L series lens, and that means you can pair it with the Extender EF 1.4 or the Extender EF 2x, and make the zoom even longer. It is a professional telephoto lens, and with the image stabilization, you don't always have to use it with a tripod. I've hand held this camera/lens pair and achieved some awesome photos of different wildlife, including bald eagles and humpback whales. It can also take great photos of backyard creatures like songbirds and deer.

What an awesome lens! I have been extremely pleased with the quality and sharpness of the Canon EF 100-400 USM IS. That image stabalizer has allowed me to shoot in lower light situations than with my old lenses. I have wanted this lens since it originally came out and finally purchased it a few months ago. There are only 2 things I can think of that I really don't like about the lens, though. 1. It's heavy. I mean really heavy. Especially after carrying it around all day. Tip: it comes with a lens case. Discard the strap that comes with it and go spend a few bucks on a wider strap that will be more comfortable. 2. Canon really needs to come out with a handle that screws into the lens' tripod mount. It would make it easier to stabalize when carrying a tripod or monopod is not convenient.
