Being from the south I've had a long term love affair with food. I use to tell my friends, "I never met a biscuit and gravy bowl I didn't like!" As the years [and weight] began to creep up on me I noticed that stairs and steps became the enemy. Why . . . my weight had insidiously become a silent problem causing me to rely on elevators, knee braces, etc. On my forty eighth birthday, my sister who had just turned fifty five decided to join Weight Watchers because she too had a major crush on waffles and hash browns and was severely over-weight. She asked me to come with her as a support buddy. I chuckled thinking, "heck, I'm just a little over-weight; I don't need anyone to tell me that!" But I love my sister so one Saturday morning off we went to our first Weight Watchers meeting.
As we walked from the parking lot to the office, we were out of breath and then horror; the office was on the second floor with NO elevator! My enemy, my own! We took each step slowly and by the time we got to the registration desk we needed to sit down. The comforting sight of other newbies also out of breath gave me a temporary sense of relief. The facilitator was a beautiful thin woman, who I had an instant hatred for, thinking, "Oh yeah, what's the matter honey, didn't get to do your 100 stomach crunches after you had your bowl of air for breakfast!" I held my judgment and listened to her story. She use to be obese more than 110 pounds over-weight and attributed Weight Watchers in saving her life. She further described how the Weight Watchers plan worked and how it changes your views on food and eating. We left with our starter packets and our first assignment, to read food labels before eating.
That was eight years ago and I'm proud to say that my sister and I reached our goal weights and have kept most of it off. The difference with this program and a diet is you KNOW exactly why you've regained the weight and you KNOW how to restart your personalized Weight Watchers program to lose it again, if you so choose. I've since loss the small amount of weight I gained back and I'm proud to say I did it on my own! I now know that I need not deprive myself to lose weight but to live life with food as a support system and not a main focus. I've even had the occasional biscuits with gravy as my flex points treat!
Overall, Weight Watchers has stood the test of time and in my opinion it's a great way to change eating habits and begin a healthier lifestyle. Stairs are no long my enemy but a wonderful ally in my exercise program.
