twinskies —

In the site's own words, twinskies is an MMO/Virtual World/Casual Game site currently under development and getting closer to initial release.  Currently you can choose your first character and name him/her/it, play several flash games, earn Meteorites and Achievements, download backgrounds and music, and chat with the uber-friendly staff and players on the forum.  Yes, that's right, various members of the staff show up and post on the forum every day, listening to the players, asking for feedback, and implementing suggestions from the players as well.  When I add that twinskies is the brainchild of Adam Powell and Donna Williams of Neopets fame, and that several staff members are some of the best that once worked for Neopets (including the awesomely talented game creator Ollie), you know the delightfully "Douglas Adams" sense of warped and tilted humor is in full bloom everywhere on twinskies.  There are now over 3,500 members, including a huge number of the best formerly-dedicated longtime Neopets players who have happily moved on to twinskies, although the two sites do not have the same content and are not competitors.  Twinskies is for those who enjoy roleplaying games or want to learn how to play them on a very user-friendly site.  Many members, like me, have never been part of the online roleplaying community before or ever thought we would want to, but the wonderful cameraderie among the members is contageous and will quickly help bring the less experienced members up to speed. I love the experience of being part of the site creation and growth process too.  The latest update of the News Archive notes that twinskies is planning the release of "Twin Skies Tower Defence' on social networking platforms such as Facebook and MySpace as a preliminary Beta introduction of the game. At the moment it is free to join, although there are plans to charge a modest monthly fee later in order to avoid advertising, which can be quite distracting on these types of sites.

UPDATE: Due to the economic downturn, the site plans were revised temporarily (until the economy improves), and the team has created a superb 2D game called VPNwars which you can reach through their website at www.meteorgames.com At only a couple months old, VPNwars already has thousands of happy players. The twinskies forum was transferred intact over to the new game, and players are still very active and friendly on it. VPN is Vikings, Pirates and Ninjas. You can choose up to 3 characters to play - all the same or one of each or two of one and one of another, whatever you want. Each character moves through the game by performing quests which lead to items of clothing, food, armour, and achievements as well as coins that can be spent in shops or at the auction house. The level of humor is laugh out loud superb.
The game is played much differently than most online games in that you receive a certain amount of energy to play with, and each quest takes part of that energy. As you increase your level through questing, you will have more energy to use. There is a 15 minute timer between energy regeneration, with 1/2 energy at 15 minutes and full energy at 30 minutes. So if you are a busy person with only a few moments here and there to pop into a game to relax with a quick bit of fantasy play, VPNwars is ideal for you.
The team is working on a vampire-theme 2D game that will be called Bitten, and hints on the forum make it sound like it will be every bit as excellent as VPNwars.
