What Happened to the Discussion Boards

I almost hate to begin another discussion thread because there are so many already.

I am not sure exactly what has happened but something has drastically changed with the boards.  Suddenly, the list of threads is 98 pages long and seems to grow by a page a day.  If you figure about 20 threads listed per page, well .. you do the math.  It's not unrealistic to bet that in another three months we will have to plow through more than 3,000 discussion threads to find the one we are looking for.  Already, it is difficult to do so, even using the "search" function.

Without pointing a finger or singling anyone out, I must add that the tone and content of some of these discussions has been disappointing.  Everybody has the right to say what they want but I have to say that I would be embarrassed if someone I invited to join ViewPoints saw some of these posts.  It doesn't matter that such discussions have been in the minority, that's not the point.

The most important thing here is that -- unless something is blatantly pornographic, racist or intolerant, there really is no legal way that a single word of these discussions can be weeded out or discarded without somebody complaining about censorship or citing "freedom of the press."  They would actually be correct to complain if they had been invited or encouraged to say whatever they wanted -- and as much as they wanted -- in this forum.  The fact that whatever has been said here connotes publication means that it will be forever with us.

Anyway, it's something to think about.  What do you all think?

The last threads that you posted in should be linked on your profile page if that helps out at all.

It helps me find my own posts but not a thread I haven't looked at for a couple weeks which may not have had my posts in it.

But thanks for reminding us about the link on the profile page.

I think it's the linking of reviews to the discussion board maybe it was there before and we are just noticing it but either way that is when I saw a HUGE influx of comments on the boards.  I too have found it hard to go back after a few days to find one I want to do and the one I miss the most is the GUESTBOOK so I can meet new members.

I wish there was a better way of categorizing the discussion board like a side blog of categories (discussions on products, websites, etc) I would also like to see specific ones like guestbook, getting started PINNED so that they are always the first thing that you seen when you visit the boards.

just my wish list, but I agree Anna, it's a little rough around the edges on the board now.  Hopefully the new DB monitors will help keep it friendly.

Anna, et.al.

As the community grows so grows the Discussion Boards.  I share your exasperation about the trying to find topics of discussions herein, but there are category's...but listing a post under a specific category is not compulsory.  So, most topics tend to get listed under the "General" category.

We can certainly bring your concerns to the Staff and see if there is an aging process that can be put in place so that discussions are not kept in perpetuity.

I think that limiting the number of discussion threads one can start [like one per day] would be helpful.

I don't know that I would limit to one and one would think that such a limitation shouldn't be necessary.  It is simply good manners to be mindful of not monopolizing these message boards.

I've got to say I think the "Moderator" post was a great idea and they seem to be doing a great job.  Thanks for your input, Lisa!

I hope you read the nice things I just said about the Moderators.  You guys are doing a great job and I'm sure it isn't always easy.

You are right- I was over exaggerating to try to make a point. [Sorry, I guess I wasn't very successful.]

Anna, I agree.  Too many threads and too hard to find the ones I want to talk in.  I suggested to Meredith that they add a "My Discussions" link so we can find the ones we are in (and I suggested that a few times on this board but it's probably buried by now)

I honestly have been talking less here because there are just too many and I can never remember which threads I was in.  I would encourage people NOT to start a new thread 10 times a day.  A few new threads a day, sure, but if you really want to start 30 threads a day, please check out Mylot.com where you can chat all day and even get paid for it.

Perhaps the points for starting threads was a bad idea.

As far as the disappointing parts - I haven't seen them because I've been backing off and just trying to find the threads I was in before.  So I hope that gets straightened out as well.  Perhaps you can forward those ones on to the Moderators whenever you see them.

TheBard brings up a great point and I have been going to a category specific board lately to try and narrow down the threads.  It certainly makes it easier to find things.

TheBard - perhaps you can suggest (if you agree) that having a main board that shows EVERYTHING is overwhelming.  Maybe it's best to force people to pick a board upon entry to the discussion boards.  I hate to reference this site but.... Epinions has the category boards and it is a bit more organized since everything is not all mixed together.

Perhaps points for discussions should be stopped since it seems like there are a few out there who are discussing just for the sake of discussing.  i like to come here and chat, yes, but I don't do it for points.  I would be curious to see how the behavior of the boards change if points are no longer awarded for using it.  Perhaps then they would slow down and those of us who like to visit would be able to keep up!

Remember when there used to be no new posts for a few hours every day?  I miss that now.
