Twitter and Tweeting

I know a lot of ViewPointers have taken to Twitter in a big way.  How does Tweeting affect your participation on community sites, e-mail correspondence, etc.  How does it affect your timelines in other activities?

There are some nice things about Twittering but it can also seduce one into wasting a great amount of time.  (For more of my eagerly-awaited and highly regarded (SMILE!) opinion, see my review about Twitter.)  Like playing online games, one has to sternly discipline oneself as to the time spent on this past-time.

I have noticed since a lot of us got involved with Tweeting, that the comment flow seems to have slowed down on ViewPoints.  On the other hand, as a free lance writer I am grateful for the Tweets that help to promote my Associated Content material, such as it is.  Incidentally, thanks to all who have encouraged me on AC.

I have a Twitter account. I think microblogging is useless. Sometimes people have links to their TwitPics that are funny. It seems like most people Tweet just to see their (insipid) thoughts in writing. All of my Tweets are obscure song lyrics. I find it amusing to see if people can figure it out. It's nice that your material can be promoted though. I'm glad it's a useful tool for someone.

If it's your thing...go for it.  I spend too much time on the PC the way it is now.  A "tweet" to me is something a bird does.

A little tweet-tweet now and then is great but a whole day spent on Twitter is a little sad, me thinks!

My "comment flow" is down too.  Is it Summer?  Twitter?  Payment on Associated Content?  Or have I lost my touch?

Do others of you notice a change in what Anna calls "comment flow"?

I vote that comments are down because of Twitter.

As far as Associated Content is concerned, it is always nice to diversify and go for new challenges but -- unless earning 15 cents for 100 page views excites you -- the prospect of being paid by AC is not enough to seduce me into abandoning ViewPoints.

I agree. I havent gotten into the Twitter thing either. I also spend way too much time on the computer and don't think it would help my time management to be on there too.

The good thing about Associated Content, though, is that once you write something there (and have a verified account), you will still earn some money on a monthly basis without having to rely on one-time payments.

As for Twitter...I'm there but in need of followers.  I only have two right now.

As a relatively new AC associate, I can already see the potential there.  I guess the problem with Twitter for me is that it just doesn't seem to foster creativity.  With Twitter, the only thing that acquires value is the Tweet-Value thing but that doesn't mean anything unless you are willing to sell your account to someone.  BTW, my code name on Twitter if "AnnieWhere".  Even though I'm not there much, welcome to the "flock!"

Hi Anna, Welcome to AC. I've been on AC since April. I like AC because I can publish my poems and earn a little money at it too. It's not much, but it is fun! :-)

Thanks, Krista -- I really enjoy your poems.

AC is nice because they tend to give writers a chance that sometimes other places don't.  After all these years, I finally got someone to take a chance on my story about "The Mule Faced Woman."  For that alone, I'm grateful.

Take care and I hope you are feeling not too bad tonight and having a nice weekend!

See you on AC or Twitter or here again -- wherever!

I checked out Twitter. I was a time suck and dull. I may or may not check it once a week now and less as time goes on.

I use Twitter mainly to promote my writing.  I keep in touch w/ my Viewpoints friends too, but to be honest, I have so many people I follow (and followers) that I miss a lot of personal "shout outs".   I really don't know if I'd use it stricly for personal use.  I use Facebook to keep in touch with people mainly.

I could have sworn I was following you, Mike!  Old clueless wonder, me.

I agree with you about Associated Content -- it's not a lot of money but that's not the POINT -- it is just a real hoot to have a little share of the "royalties" and be more of a partner.  I love going into my report in the morning and checking on what I've got for performance payments, even if it is only a few cents.

I'm beginning to get some comments from new people too, so that is encouraging.  ViewPoints is great in a lot of ways but it also pays to diversify!

Take care, Mike!

I actually know some writers that it IS quite a bit of money where they make over 1000 a month with their writing, up front offers and page views bonus.  It take a lot of work, and I prefer to diversify my writing and stretch my wings.  It's nice to see some familar faces there - like Krista Lynn, Jo, Awlafon, Anna, Fardreamer, The Bard and Jen and many others.  I have been there two yrs and enjoy seeing my numbers, pay and bonuses keep growing. Funny, I just did a review tonight of AC !

I think it doesn't seem like much money when you've just been into it a week or two but it is the excitement of having a "stake" in something.  Usually a writer is just paid off and that's that or at least that has been my experience in the past.  So it is fun to be able to go in and look at the report in the morning and see what progress has been made.  I think like most things, AC is pretty much what you make it.

Thanks for your help, Lisa, and your loyal support.  I'll check out your review of AC now.

I have to be honest. I tweet and use TwitPic, but I really don't know the right way to use it. I don't get what all the @ are for. Can you send a message to someone that doesn't follow you? I don't know. I look on the help, but it seems cryptic to me. They are using terms I do not know in the answer to the question. I don't want to use @reply or @mention. what if it's wrong and I accidentally anger someone? Also, I don't get when people use the @ in their tweets. I think it's really confusing and I would use it more (and maybe invite others) if I could figure it out.

I am a pro at Twitter, I think.  Yes, you can send @ replies to people not following you; except for 2 groups.  Those who have a locked account and those who have chosen to block you.

The @ in a tweet is making reference to another Twitter members screen name.  If you don't put the @ in front of the name then other readers cannot use it as a link.  For example: my screen name on Twitter is LittleGigiGirl.  Feel free to follow me, check me out or whatever.  If you were to write about me in a reply and only put LittleGigiGirl no one else would be able to link to me.  But if you were to put @LittleGigiGirl it would become a link.

I believe I have slowed down at Viewpoints because of Twitter because I have been able to connect with real friends at Twitter.  I try to allot so much time to read Viewpoints reviews.  For a while I was trying to read everyone's reviews and comments but then I realized that was unrealistic and I couldn't keep up with it all once my dance season began in February.

And with Twitter everything happens in real time while you are at your PC.  With Viewpoints you are constantly bouncing between reviews, blogs, discussion boards and so forth to see if anyone has responded to a comment that you may have just posted.
