While reading a survey about gas prices, a contributor mentioned gas must be pumped by attendants in NJ.  Made me curious about other states.  Here in NE we pump our own.  What's the norm in your state?

It is against the law for people to pump their own gas in NJ.  Fine with me.... I stay in the car and let the attendants do the work!

It used to be that way in Oregon when I lived there 17 years ago.  Don't know if it still is or not.  I sure do miss it when the weather's bad!

I have not had an attendant pump my fuel in forever! The last state I was in where it was even an option, tacked at least $.10/gal onto the price to have someone else pump it! It would be nice, but not nice enough to pay extra for. Is the gas priced higher in NJ, or do the stations just build it into other products/services? I always wondered that...

Interestingly NJ gasoline prices are about the lowest on the East Coast.  I've never been able to get a straight answer on why there is no self-serve in that state.

I understand that it's against the law to have self-serve in New Jersey. The politicians finally did something right!

We went on vacation to Oregon this year, and they still pump the gas for you there too.

When we lived in IN there was one man that had his own gas station.  He got people to pump the gas and the car's were all lined up.  He also droped the gas a penny from all the others ones.  He couldn't keep up with all the car's that came.  He knew what he was doing.

I agree with you, onwaytozion.  If they can provide more jobs without jacking up the price, it sounds like a win/win situation.

I grew up in NJ and liked having the attendent pump the gas. When I go back to visit I almost get out of the car to do it myself since almost every other state is self serve (unless you pay an extra $1/gallon).

Texans do things for themselves. There are a few gas stations that will pump for you, but the premium price you pay for this service (another $1.50 per gallon) is outrageous and few use it.

Here in PA, there are self-pump stations, and some with bays where it is pumped for you.  Usually the self-service is a least 0.10/gallon less.  Recently regular gas was at 2.55/g  for self.

An additional $1.50/gallon to have an attendant pump your gas?  yikes!

In ct, we pump our own but there are also full service stations every now and then.

I've never seen a full service station outside of the movies.  I didn't even know they still existed!  Well, I'm impatient.  I think i'd rather do it myself then have to wait for someone to do it :)

NJ is all about full service. My wife has lived here all her life and doesn't even know how to pump her own gas. I was shocked when I first learned that I couldn't pump my own gas since I did it all the time back in Vancouver (though RIchmond, where I lived, is all full service).

But just a couple of weekends ago, we were in PA and needed to fill up gas. Of course it's a self service station and my wife looked at me and said "What do we do?" The answer was easy... pump my own gas. As I proceeded doing it, she looked at me and said "You know how to do that?" It was priceless!

I can't even remember the last time someone else pumped my gas, except for my husband...lol...It's been alooooooooong time. They first started with full-service & self service. Now it's all self service in the states we have traveled or lived in Ohio, Illinois, and Michigan. Indiana only know the turnpike is self-serve. Those days are long gone for full-service. My husband when he was a  teenager worked at a gas station, pumped gas, cleaned the windshield, and they would even check your oil....Those were the days my friends!

Wow elvis, that's talent ;)  Haha.

Darlyn, my husband gets my gas most of the time b/c he insist on going to speedway to get his speedy points.  But sometimes I have to get it b/c it's running low at a bad time, and it does take me a second to remember what to do sometimes :-D

Now you're lucky if the guy at the gas station speaks english....
