Hi there everyone.  My husband and I have been talking about 3 years now in regards to moving from Rhode Island and moving to Oklahoma.  My husband desperatly wants a horse ranch, and the 6 of us hate the weather in RI and the people are rude and we have lived her our entire lives.  I was wondering if anyone who lives in Oklahoma can give me some information or their take on living in OK.  We do understand they they get tornados.  We did find a gorgeous executive ranch estate 3 years ago that is still on the market and we are even more tempted the more the weather in RI stinks.  Any help appreciated thank you.-MCM

Run away from Rhode Island, run away! I left in 1996 (grew up there). I don't know about OK, personally. I live in Iowa now. I have lived in UT, CO and TX also. So far, the midwest is absolutely beautiful. I am really attached to central IA, so I hope when my husband graduates college we can stay. People have the wrong idea about plains states. I made a slide show of IA near me to show my family the lakes, rivers, and woodsy nature trails, camping areas, and yes - the beautiful fields green with corn and soy. Some of the pictures look just like New England and the fall colors are going to be great. People have been so nice and helpful here. I heard the weather forecast last night: "Three H's" all RI-ers know that means "Hazy, Hot, and Humid." OK, Iowans don't really know the meaning of those three words. Three H's near an ocean is horrible and oppressive. Midwest Three H's are very bearable.

Hearing tornado sirens the first few times is scary. (I heard them all the time in TX). I just have a plan and don't worry too much about it. What can you do?

Even if I got sucked up in a tornado or floated away in a flood, I would be glad my last days weren't spent around affronted rude people and socialist politics.

Besides, I think you will be very pleasantly surprised... Rhode Island is a really expensive place to live in. You'll get more bang for your buck in the midwest.

I know this wasn't OK-specific info. Just wanted to give you a slant on an ex-RI-er living in the midwest.

Thank you so much for responding.  Oh I sooooooooo agree with you all the way around about RI and all your reasons are the same reasons we want out and badly.  My husband is a CFP and he read a statistic that RI was in the top 5 most expensive states to live in.  Where else but here do you pay $14,000 a year in taxes on your home never mind vehicles are another few thousand $'s.  They are raising our Drivers license fees from $30 to $150 this year.  I think we would be happy mid-west period.  The mid-west is also centrally located in the US for my husband to travel to see his clients in the US.  Like yourself anyone I know who moved from here is much happeier elsewhere.  Thanks again.

Oklahoma is the only state in the contiguous 48 that I have not visited. I have heard mixed sentiments about the state, with some liking it for its reasonable cost of living and others criticizing it for lack of scenery and entertainment. Still, it would likely make a better choice then Rhode Island. Yes, the taxes are much lower in Oklahoma and most goods are cheaper, too.

I read a news article a month ago about people moving from California to Oklahoma. The cost of living in OK is almost half of CA and new residents are finding there are activities they can enjoy. What's ironic is that many Oklahomans moved to CA in the 1930s, and now some of their ancestors are moving back. I'll see if I can find a link to that news article, but it may be gone....

Thank you so much for the gr* information.  I think that is wild about the ancestors moving back to OK.  Our expenses would be cut in half by moving from RI as well.  RI'ers don't get the pay Cali's do but the expenses are quite close in costs of living.  We want more sunshine 2

Thank you fellow traveler.  We too have traveled to quite a few states but not to OK just yet.  My husband feels drawn to their lands.  Thank you for your input I appreciate it.

OK gave us Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Brad Pitt, Will Rogers, Mikey Mantle, Ron Howard, Chuck Norris, and Carrie Underwood.  They're doing something right out there!!!

I have to chime in that I live in MA. My son in law is from Cos Cob and the kids now live in Stamford. Wow E. Greenwich to OK - that's quite a change but there is something so exciting about moving to a place very different from where you've lived.

Hi Jo,

You get pretty much the same weather we get here.  Cos Cob where is that?  I agree with you there is something so exciting about moving to a place very different from where you've lived. My husband wants a horse ranch there.  -Joanne aka Jo

Cos Cob is in Connecticut, near Stamford. Very upscale.

Thank you for clarifying that for me.  I am familiar with Greenwich Villiage and Danbury (Fairfield) county and that is about it.   My husband worked in an office in Danbury years ago.

I guess you have to live in that area to know what's what. Greenwich Village is in New York City... it's a neighborhood in Manhattan. Greenwich is a city in Connecticut, also not far from Stamford. Both are pronounced GREN-itch.

Oh yes you are correct.  I visited with a friend in Greenwich near Stamford back in the late 80's.  Went to the Stamford mall and then we went to the Javits (sp?) center in NY City for a hair show.  -Joanne who lives in East Greenwich, RI also pronounced GREN-itch.
