I'm curious about how much people are spending for gas in different locations. I am paying about $3.95 per gallon, but if I drive 20 miles to the south or west, it is only $3.69. I still do not understand why there are such big fluctuations in price.

Well it's been about $4.16 lately but I haven't seen a 3 in a long time here in MI! AHHHH

I think I can make you feel a little better about the $4.17. My sister from Staten Island, NY called me today, her local station hit $4.51 today!!!!! OUCH!!!! $4.57 in Chicago is nuts!! I would sell my car and use the train!

The problem for some of us is that our states/cities don't have a really good public transportation system. If I lived in/near downtown Chicago, I'd use the train but keep my car for longer trips. But here in MI, buses are a pain and there are no subways or trains :(

I have the same problem....kind of rural here and only one bus that doesn't really go anywhere....if that makes sense. My husband took it one day to Manhattan and it cost him $37.00 and he had to stand for almost 3 hours...there were no seats left when he got on. He was able to get a seat on the return trip though. The bus runs from Manhattan down to Cape May but makes only limited stops. It's kind of useless.

From the Kansas City-metro (KS side)I am proud to say that I paid just under $4.00 at $3.99. Compared to the station 1/2 mile away that was charing $4.16, I am thrilled!!
City driving I don't do so well - I average around 18 mpg. Highway driving rocks - try around 28 mpg. I'm not a speed demon nor floor it once the light turns green, so it's a bit interesting. The mechanic we spoke to blamed the heat. We'll see.

That is the advantage of living in a large city...public transportation. I miss that. Where I am now, we have nothing. You need to drive at least 30 minutes to the nearest train station. At that point, it's just not worth it.

I just paid $3.89 at a Costco gas station in Winchester, VA, today. After filling up, I saw another nearby gas station that had regular for $3.85. That's the lowest I've seen in a while.
If the big drop in the price of crude oil this week sticks around, we can expect to see gasoline drop about 45 cents per gallon. It will take at least a couple weeks for that drop to show up, although I'm all for a 45-cent drop in the price of gas!

I just found a gas station near my house that is charging $3.69 in Mahwah, NJ. This is, of course, if you pay in cash. It's $3.85 with credit card. However, just a few feet away is another gas station that is charging $3.75 for both cash AND credit card. Otherwise, the average seems to be $3.85 for now.

That's about the same here... we hit a low of $3.64 the other day and then everyone jumped .20 before the weekend. Stations haven't started the extra charges for credit cards yet here but I hear many places are going that direction.

In the Costco in Winchester, VA, on August 2, regular gasoline was $3.66. That's the cheapest I've seen it in a long time, if you can call $3.66 cheap.

Bob - - $3.66 is cheap we went down to $3.83. Today gas dropped over $3.00 a barrel. Why does it take so long for us to see the decreases at the pumps?
