I have always had vivid dreams. I often wake up with a very clear memory of the dreams but then it all fades away. Now and then, a dream will really get to me and will stick with me. I will think about it all day long. I will remember it for ages. I sometimes can get an idea of how a dream came about but usually, I have NO idea why I dreamed what I did.

Do you think dreams are our brain's way of saying things or getting out thoughts that we don't think about when awake or are they just random crazy things that mean absolutely nothing? I know I have had some dreams that seemed to mean things but then again, it could have been a coincidence.

So what do you think? Do dreams mean anything or are they just mental gibberish going through our minds?

Nope I don't think they mean anything.  Years ago my sister had dream books and we used to look up the meaning of things in our dreams, but I've since learned I can really make my dream anything I want it to be.

Usually I actually can get an idea of where the dream came from, even though sometimes it was just something minor that happened during the day.  Sometimes it's brought on by something I was worried about.  But I have overall learned to control my dreams and often think about things before bed so that I can dream about them.  It usually works :)

Anyway - back to the Dream Dictionary.  The explanations behind most things made no sense to my life most of the time.  Once I dreamed about falling out teeth and looked it up and it said something like "you are dealing with something stressful".  But in reality, I dreamed about it because I was going to the dentist the next day and worried about my teeth being clean!

Oh and if you want to remember your dreams, get a notebook and pen by your bed.  Every morning before you are fully awake, write it down as much as you can remember.  When I did this I sometimes didn't even turn the lights on b/c I could see the paper enough to know where I was writing.

Another tip - when you wake up - just stay still for 5 minutes and try to repeat the dream in your head.  That way you are more likely to remember it.

I was taking an antidepressant for a while, and I didn't realize how it had stolen my dreams; I rarely remember having any. When I stopped taking it, I was amazed that I could remember several long, detailed dreams every night.

I think dreams are usually just random thoughts popping up with strange connections. But I've also had some dreams that were very meaningful, usually accompanied by that aha feeling. You can just tell the difference!

When I was working as a computer programmer, I would often spend hours working on a problem, getting no solution. Then the next morning, I would solve the problem in five minutes! I think that, even though the body is sleeping, the mind is still going subconsciously (maybe with the crazy stuff of dreams) and can provide answers that we consciously overlook.

Dreaming is a way for the mind to release and relieve stress. Though some dreams can be disturbing, I'm not sure they have a particular meaning, they're usually a cumulative effect from things that happen to us over time that we tend to repress.  It's good to dream !

Yes, I do think my dreams reflect what's going on in my life.  For the most part, anyway. Sometimes I have a really wacky dream and have no idea what caused them, but most of the time I can pin it down to a source or stress, worry, fear, or joy in my life.

I used to dream almost nightly that my teeth would crack and fall out. I heard all kinds of theories but it turns out that I was clenching my teeth at night due to TMJ. I must have felt that and incorporated it into my dreams. I got a retainer (which my dog chewed up a a few weeks later) and stopped grinding and clenching. I haven't had many of those dreams lately.

I often dream of my father and that's pretty obvious. He died in 2006 and we had a strange relationship with no closure. I'm sure he's on my mind all of the time and, when I sleep, those thoughts are released.

Oddly, I rarely have nightmares. I haven't had a scary dream in ages. The only one I had a lot was that I was trying to cross a busy street and couldn't seem to move as cars whizzed by me, getting really close to hitting me. I would slap my leg in the dream to get myself going and, in reality, I was slapping my leg to wake myself up. I always woke up before a car hit me. So weird.

I think dreams do mean something. They come from somewhere. But I don't think they foretell the future or anything although I HAVE dreamed of things and then similar things have happened. That is always freaky.

Dreams have whatever meaning one chooses to attach to it.

When I took a psychology class in college we had a discussion about dreams. The professor said that dreams are like a movie in which you are the director, producer, screenplay writer, and you choose all the actors and their lines - kind of scary huuh?. Yes, they have meaning because your mind is assembling everything and trying to work through something. But I have to admit they often make no sense whatsoever once I am awake.

Here's hoping I have one of those computer programming problem solving dreams tonight!  I have something I just can't seem to work out.  But I do agree, often time I wake up with a new sense of energy and motivation to work on something that I had a hard time with the day before.  Part of it I think is clearing my head, but maybe you are right that my brain is "working"

This is another reason I used to keep a notebook by my bed.  There were many times I woke up in the middle of the night and thought of a good idea for work or home or whatever.  I scribbled it down and hoped to be able to read it in the morning :)  Sometimes though I woke up and read it and it was the dumbest idea haha.

Yep it's like when I dream I have to go to the bathroom really bad (but can't find a bathroom for some reason).  Then I wake up and realize... oh I really do have to go to the bathroom :-D  So I can see why clenching your teeth did that too.

I never had what I would call nightmares - i.e. I never woke up screaming or upset.  I've had weird dreams but years ago I read into this more and learned how you can change/control your dreams.  So whenever I would have a dream that was turning bad, somehow in my brain I told myself it was just a dream and turned it around!  I rarely have any kind of disturbing dream anymore :)  Unless you count not being able to find a matching pair of socks disturbing!  Those are the kind of dreams I have when I'm worried about being late.

That makes sense and fits with what I read about being able to control your dreams.  I would start trying to train myself to think about things before bed so I'd have pleasant dreams regarding those things or people - such as being on a beach in the bahamas!

But if you do start writing them down, it's funny to read them later and see how weird they are.

BTW - I had read a superstition that if you had a bad dream, it wouldn't come true if you told someone.  So I still to this day will tell my husband any weird dream I have... just in case :)

My son once dreamed of a phone number he was given and it stuck with him so he called it and a girl answered. He didn't know what to say so he hung up but he said in his dream a girl gave him the number. Pretty funny.

I go in spurts. I will have wacky dreams for a week or two and then seemingly none for a while. I haven't had a dream I can remember in a while now. I have written down my dreams and I laugh when I read them back because they are so insane. But some clearly show stress like when I am in a maze or a fun house unable to get out or when I can't move and traffic is going to hit me. I really think my brain is stressed and I feel like I am in a maze and it comes out in that way.

Then again, I sometimes dream of people I never met, don't know, and don't even know if they are real. The dreams mean absolutely nothing to me. They're boring actually. I rarely have a "juicy" dream and I always wake up before it gets good anyway. Darn it. ;)

My sister was once on an antidepressant and she had such vivid action dreams that she had to stop the medication. All night long, she dreamed of fast moving action type things where she was running or speeding away in a car or whatever and she woke up exhausted. When she stopped taking the medicine, they went away. That shows you that medicines definitely affect the brain!

I'm not really sure if the "meanings" that are in the dictionaries are right or not... sometimes they fit what's going on in my life and sometimes not.  Most of the time my dreams are somehow connected to what's going on in my life.  They definitely get stranger with the more stress going on in my life.  And I tell you what... pregnancy dreams have to be the most vivid and wierd dreams EVER.  there was a chunk of time a few weeks back where I had stress and a bad head infection going on... on top of the hormones and I was having some way wacky dreams.  They also get really odd if I've watched too many CSI type shows in a row.  For a while I had to cut myself off even though I love them cause I couldn't sleep at night from the dreams.

The other thing that can sometimes happen with my dreams is I will dream while half asleep... which equates to sleep talking and possibly walking depending on the dream.  I have learned to control these once they happen which is only a few times per year... usually when I'm sleep deprived and really stressed.  My husband usually doesn't appreciate these (sometimes he does depending on the dream;).
