The team here at Viewpoints just moved into our new offices.  There is a big blank wall in our entrance area where we are planning to feature the profile pages of some of our most active (and interesting!) writers.   I am also thinking about painting a quote on the wall that will reflect and convey our passionate belief in the power of online communities and their role in helping people make smarter decisions.

To that end I would love to hear from all of you what your favorite quotes are in general and what specific quotes you think might best reflect our core mission of buidling communiteis to help people make smarter decisions.

Thanks in advance for your help on this!

My favorite quite is "It's not how many times you fall, but how many times you get up." I have fallen many times from health issues, financial issues, and all kinds of things but I have gotten up again and kept going. That quote reminds me that not everything goes smoothly and you have to get up and keep going!

In wrestling, it's not how many times you lose the belt, it's how many times you win it back. Believe it or not, that inspires me in a kind of weird fantasy way. You don't need to be ashamed that you lost the belt, you need to go win that thing back! lol, OK no more wrestling references! ;)

I like "Real people make a real difference." when it comes to this community. We're real. We're not professional critics. We're like everyone else and we relate to everyone else as real people. I really believe the realness of this community makes it special. people from every walk of life can write here and have their say. They don't have to be scholars or writers, just real people with real opinions.

More to come!

My favorite quote in general is:

From the outside looking in, it's impossible to understand. From the inside looking out, it's impossible to explain.

I need to think about a specific one.

Wow, I have many favorites. But lately I like:

"Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing."

My all-time favorite quote is the one on my profile page: "The world breaks everyone, and afterwards, some are stronger in the broken places" by Ernest Hemingway...definitely the therapist in me.

I LOVE onwaytozion's quote above mine...that really suits VP!

The evening before my father died 30 years ago, I took my mother for a walk in a park adjoining the hospital.  We sat talking on a park bench and when we got up to go back to the hospital room we saw this quote enraved on the back of the bench. "Nothing is to be more highly prized than the value of each day" - Von Goethe.

I've heard some really clever ones. which, of course, I can't remember right now! I keep coming back to the tried & true: "Anything worth doing is worth doing well." "Think before you speak" (I learned this one the hard way....several times). And of course, the Golden Rule... Treat others as you would have them treat you.

I love the quote by Mark Twain: "The best swordsman in the world has nothing to fear from the second best swordsman in the world, but he may very well be killed by the fool who has picked up a sword for the first time and is just messing about with it". That has always stuck with me. Never underestimate someone who doesn't have the training & experience that you have.

I have two I live by:

The first I saw on a web page for one of those quizzes that tells you what ____ you are, depending on the focus of the quiz. This was there when I took a quiz on what science fiction TV show are you and I tested out as Star Trek DS9

"you know what needs to be done to take care of those around you"

I changed you to I and, hence, is motto number one. Works with my family, works in my day job.

The second one I use for music and I got it from my bass-playing friend, Steven Hashimoto.

"Everyone has a thing that they do, and you have to believe in your thing so much so that the fact that other people do other things wonderfully well doesn't paralyze you"

That is what my music is about.

I always liked the one my training instructor in Basic Training used.  He told us to always respect our instructors and obey them, but not really fear them because, after all, "They can't eat ya and they can't kill ya".

How about from the Joker in The Dark Knight? "What doesn't kill you makes you.....stranger"

Seriously, one of my favorites is from C.S. Lewis.-

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.

I forget who it was who said:

"You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool ALL of the people ALL of the time!"

I don't know if I quoted that exactly right but that's one thing you've got to say about ViewPoints:  as a group, it's very hard to pull one over on all of us.  As a group, we are almost unstoppable.

I got the quote right but shame on me for not remembering that it was Abraham Lincoln who said it.  I have a feeling he would have been a great asset to ViewPoints!

For the site, I like "Learning from experience is smart. Learning from other people's experience is wise." or a variation therein.

Below are some of my favorite quotes. The last three are quotes I've written myself.

"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly."

"Live today to the fullest. Let God worry about tomorrow."

"Never give up on life no matter how bad it gets."

"Give a big hug to someone in pain today. It shows that you care and love them."

I actually have four quotes that I use on a regular basis in conversation, letters and emails:

When two loves of my life died (Adonai and recently Brannigan) I bring to mind my motto on VP by Norman Cousins: "Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live."

I also like "Our greatest glory consists not in NEVER falling, but in rising EVERY time we fall."  Can't remember the author but I believe it may have been Winston Churchill.

My two originals that get me through difficult times:

"Life is hard but God is good."

"Not MY will but THINE be done.  In these seven simple words the victory's won."

You mean they don't? I had better get some Syrup of Ipecac ASAP!

I love that quote. I just wish I could remember that when I hold those grudges.

I had to smile at this, Patty.  I speak from experience when I say that there comes a time in a person's life when it's not "how many times you get up" but IF you can get up without crawling over and grabbing onto something!

HAHA -- just had to interject that here!

The other evening I was praying about our upcoming revival at church and a friend sent me a quote that I am now saying regularly to prepare my heart.

"Lord, break my heart with something that breaks yours."

I love motivational and inspiration quotations. I actually keep a log of good ones I come across or hear so I'm THRILLED to be able to share them with someone!  Thanks so much for asking :)

A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds. (No idea who said this though LOL)

"Good enough... isn't." - My friend and music director, Mark Logsdon, used to say this. I played in his musical group for many years and we had a reputation for being the best in the country. At times we'd sort of rest on our laurels and adopt a bit of a "well that's good enough" kind of attitude and stop trying so hard. He wanted to stay on top so he'd yell at us "practice, practice, PRACTICE! Good enough, isn't!"

Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. Einstein

Here are a few more I like that are specifically about community:

Margaret Mead:
Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Sandra Day O'Connor:
We don't accomplish anything in this world alone ... and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something.

These are great ~ and some of the most simplest are the best IMHO.

I like many, and MikeMaroon's on his profile page in particular:

"God is great. Beer is good. And people are crazy..."

I have mine, it's on my profile page and for the life of me I cannot remember hearing it anywhere.  If it's from someone other than myself please feel free to correct me:

"What Will They Think of LAST?"

I loved the chance to write my favorite quote and read everybody else's.

Also it's great to meet the Founder & CEO. This site is one of the best. I haven't been a member for very long but I check in every day and always find something that interests me. I have actually started creating topics and am getting great feedback on some of my thoughts,

I am really glad I found viewpoints.

These are all great sayings and quotes. I discovered one recently that applies to me:

"Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened"by Theodore "Dr. Suess" Geisel.

Too many things end. Just be gald you had the experience...
