Today I was offered a chance to partake in a survey by MySurvey.com (the one with Carol Wright, etc.) which is one of the best outfits around.  I have scored not only free merchandise but more than $300 from them so far.  PLUS I usually enjoy the surveys but the one I tried today really shocked me.

After an initial screening survey by MySurvey, I was offered a chance to sign up with and take a longer survey with some other outfit.  My reward would be 2,000 MySurvey points ($20).  The subject was credit card use and I was okay with this as I have taken financial surveys before where you told how many cards you had, what type, and how much (percent-wise) you used each card for each month.  THAT I'm okay with.

Imagine my surprise when this credit card survey asked me to give not only the number of cards I had but each credit card number, password and the answers to my security questions for each card!  I backed out immediately as I will never give up that information to anyone over the Net.  If I had a conjoined twin, I probably wouldn't even give HER that information!  I can't see any possible scientific good it would do anyone to know that stuff about me.  Further, they had promised me at the beginning of the survey that the information I gave about my cards would remain anonymous with nobody knowing who I am ... but the first information they asked for was my name, address, birth date, etc. and that added to the credit card numbers and security info does not bode well for anyone remaining anonymous or indeed hanging on to their personal identity information.

I'm glad I backed out on this but I've got to thinking that OTHER people must be going along with this and answering this survey.  It takes a lot of time an expense to conduct a survey like that and maybe other people are more trusting.  So here I am, conducting my own private survey -- if someone offered you $20, would YOU give up your personal information, credit card numbers, passwords and answers to security questions?  Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

I would never give out my information like that at all so you did the right thing. You should contact MySurvey to see if this was legitimate.

I agree! In fact we have been re working my mom's money and I got a call from a bank wanting to make sure that the withdrawals were right. When he asked for my driver's license number I told him that it was none of his business! Plus I called the bank to make sure he worked for them. Jo

Good point! and as it happens that's what I did do.  Haven't heard from them yet.

You are NOT being paranoid.  That is unsafe!  I hope you reported this to MySurvey.com, that does not sound like a practice they would agree with.  I often take surveys that start to get personal and close out.  They don't need to even know my address!  Usually I give fake names and phone numbers if I have to give those things, but most of the time if they start asking for phone, address or even real name, I hit the x.

20$ isn't enough for my personal info... maybe I'd do it for $100,000 :)

It really makes it suspicious about the name and address thing because MySurvey already has that info, for sending me checks and merchandise, etc.  I should have got suspicious then, hope I stopped in time.

Thanks for your insight, everyone!

Just thought I would let you all know that I have heard from MySurvey, who are going to look into it!  Thanks for all your feedback!

I can't imagine MySurvey playing a part in that. I hope NO ONE was foolish enough to give out that info and I hope MySurvey gets to the bottom of the situation. I have a few surveys waiting for me. I hope one isn't that one! Keep us informed!

I'm betting this is a well polished scam.  And, I bet they manage to sting a whole bunch of people.

Yikes. I would never take a credit card survey, not even for MySurvey!

Actually I have gotten emails about credit card and bank surveys now that I think about it.  I never did them at all because I wasn't even willing to share which bank I use.  So I always just deleted those surveys without even going to them.

My banks always have pop-ups when I log in reminding me not to give password information to anyone even if they call and say they are from the bank. I got a charge for $2 on my account and when I called to ask about it they told me to give them all of my info from my debit card so they could make sure it would never happen again. I immediately canceled the card. it was a pain, but less of a pain than if I had to clear up bad charges.

You are not being paranoid - you were being smart!

You did EXACTLY the right thing. Someone was trying to scam you and you smelled at rat.  Nobody legit in that situation is going to ask for that information.  It was a hacker.

No question you did the right thing!  I'm so paranoid that once my credit card company contacted me to inquire about suspicious activity.  I told the rep that I would call them back at the number on the back of my credit card to make sure it wasn't a scam.  Turns out it wasn't, but they said I had done the right thing.  Oh yeah, someone had used my number to make two small purchases.  I'm paranoid when it comes to my personal data and proud of it!

I agree. You did the right thing. It was someone trying to rip you off and you  didn't fall for it.I hope they stop it from being sent to other people from that survey site so others won't fall for it. I'm glad they told you they'll look into it. Please let us  know what happens.

Speaking of hackers, turns out that one of the worst - meaning the best at it but the worst in the criminal sense - graduated from my high school.  No, we are not classmates; I'm Class of 1983 and he is Class of 1999.  But it creeps me out knowing that a guy who stole millions of credit card numbers from such stores as T.J. Maxx walked in the same hallways as I did.

Point well taken.

However, one of my classmates turned out to be a corrupt cop who was arrested for selling drugs, and a student at my high school (a junior this year) shot and killed his father.

I am really surprised MySurvey would associate with a company asking such personal info. Perhaps you should send an email to the folks at MySurvey and let them know what happened.  It could also be someone who has hacked into your computer and managed to divert your survey to them in hopes someone will give them what they want.  I hope this issue gets resolved. You were smart to recognize this was out of the ordinary. You aren't paranoid. You're smart!!!

I've seen similar surveys throughout my time with them, although not often.  There was one like you speak of and also a cell phone one that asked for certain permissions as well.  I backed out of those pretty quickly.

That is creepy. It is kind of like finding out that a serial killer lived next door and you never once suspected him.

I received the same offer from NFO and I politely turned it down. There have been similar offers in the past, usually for 2000 or more points, that involve credit card studies, personal investment studies, etc. I never accept them- the risk isn't worth it.

Oh, yes.  You did the right thing!  NO WAY should you ever give out that information.  That's insane!  I quit working with MySurvey a few months ago actually.  Now I'm really glad I did.

Wow, AnnaBanana, I'm glad to hear you backed out of that survey.  I'm a member there also, and several other survey sites, and I don't care for the ones that ask me for my cell number.  I've never had a survey ask outright for my CC number, just the types of cards I have.

eek!  so yeah, forewarned is forearmed I suppose.
