So should I open this up for discussion and do the facts matter?

6 kids already under the age of 7
single parent - was married for 3 years
grandmother filed bankruptcy i.e. lack of money to care for these children?
She had fertility treatments

How about other things like quality of time with these kids, environmental issues, etc. etc. plus the money needed for special needs.

"Must See TV" at its finest.

Another reason why I hardly ever turn mine on.

Yes, I have learned, but some small part of me still wants to believe that Americans will reject exploitative crap like that, and in my head even boycott the advertisers! I know it won't happen, but hope springs eternal. Do you know Dr. Laura Schlessinger? She's ultra-conservative and a bit nutty in my opinion. She was going to get a daytime TV show and it had to be cancelled because so many gay rights people flooded Procter & Gamble with threats of boycott so her major advertiser pulled out.

I wish if people would do something so drastic to have someone's opinion kept off the TV that they would also come to the rescue of some poor children that have suffered enough. I know it won't happen, but I am still rooting for the 14 underdogs here.

Oh thank goodness. It's interesting. I am on our No Place for Hate Committee in my town. We are having Diversity Day in September. There is a group here - the 12 Tribes- they're all over the world who seem at first glance to be really cool people living communally with a fantastic store and furniture they make themselves. Several years back when they first came to town I went in and read there literature. Women are subservient and the beat there kids. Ok so eventually (I wouldn't do business with them but told everyone I knew) they agreed to a Town Meeting because 2 of the kids who left talked to the press about being locked in the basement for 2 weeks, etc. etc. As it turns out they homeschool their kids with no curriculum. I am sure that has changed because the Superintendant of Schools was there but at the time they admitted to that. It doesn't matter to them because the kids don't leave - some do like any other group. In any case someone mentioned that they should be included in Diversity Day. First of all we decided not to include religions - just ethnicities and second of all they beat their kids. Then I felt badly that here I am on this committee and I wasn't being sensitive. I talked with a friend who agreed with me and we also agreed that we wouldn't let the KKK come to Diversity Day so it is ok to decide that people who do what most see as bad aren't included. Whew!! The Dr. Laura thing is way old news, like yr 2000. She still has a popular show on AM radio.

See, in your Diversity Day, people who do what most see as bad are not included.

Most people do see what Nadya Suleman does/is doing as bad and she gets encouraged and rewarded for it. Even though people think it's horrible and if it happens again with someone else, we'll all be up in arms over it again. TLC is already casting for women pregnant with multiples for yet another show. I have never watched Jon and Kate, or 18 kids and counting, or any other parenting show. i don't have kids. It doesn't interest me. They interviewed Kate's sister. Jon and Kate got twins on their very first try of IVF. That's rare. i don't know what their relationship is like, so this could just be specious, but she said Kate wanted to implant more embryos to see if she could "get stuff."

Even if she didn't say it, that is what happens. It seems like you get your "15 minutes of fame" by carrying huge multiple loads of kids. The McCaughey septuplets in 1997 were rare. They did end up getting an new van and house and corporations giving them lots of baby stuff and college money and they were the focus of lots of news shows and got media attention.

It really seems like some people saw that as some kind of a gravy train. That stuff happened because it was such a rarity. It wasn't an invitation to crank out multiples. Maybe I just didn't pay attention before, but after the septuplets, it seemed like all over the world records started being broken IVF-wise. There were other octos but media attention faded when some of them died, but Nadya's lived so now she's the top breeder. What about that Spanish lady who forged a birth certificate and came to the USA for IVF and gave birth at age 66? She just died and her twins aren't even 3! She said her parents lived to 101, so she thought it was OK to have a baby. Now there are twin boys with no family.

Like the Careys say, sometimes you put in a lot of embryos in the hopes that one will take. These shows and the fanfare and fame involved are encouraging people to put themselves and their babies in danger! Babies aren't supposed to be 1.5 lbs at birth and spend five months in an incubator. Chicken eggs hatch in an incubator. Babies mature in a womb. No one with multiples that high have all (mostly none) the babies born healthy with fully developed organs, breathing on their own and normal weights. They're lucky if they have one like that.

I guess that's just why I am disgusted, and yes, vivasuzi, I know I shouldn't be surprised. I know so many people feel that way, but it won't stop them from pausing to look at this newest trainwreck.

The really only thing we can do is not watch the shows and write to the sponsors which you said is how Laura's program got cancelled.

Cranking out kids isn't just something people do for TV shows!  I know people who crank out kids for government benefits... and it sickens me.  They know that the government won't let a child starve, so they crank out another and then go apply for more "free stuff".  I try to avoid associating with these people as much as I can, because what they do just makes me feel so sorry for their poor helpless kids!

Or they'll keep having babies because they are too dumb to not have them anymore.  Believe it or not, some people are like that!

i agreee with ya lol

My belief is that this woman is in some way mentally impaired.  No woman in her right mind (with or without husband, but especially without) with six children under the age of 7 would seriously consider having another child, much less eight more.  So she enjoys being pregnant... let's see how much she enjoys taking care of 14 children under the age of 7.  Not to put too fine a point on it, she's extremely selfish, only thinking of what she wants, but not of the consequences of her behavior.  Of course, she's going to expect the taxpayers to foot the bill for her brood, because there's no way she can work to support all of those children.

baby486... She'll probably enjoy taking care of the 14 kids very much due to all the free help she's getting :(

Luckily for the kids, she will probably get enough viewers and make enough money to support them.  Sadly though, this will only encourage people to repeat the behavior :(

We were saying the other day.... it's harder for someone to adopt a cat then it is for them to have a baby!  The Humane Society will actually tell you your house isn't good enough for a cat or dog, but no one can tell a person they aren't good enough/stable enough to pop out a baby.  Crazy how that works!

I think this may be closer to the truth.  Although there are those who game the system by having more some just don't realiaze how "it" happens.  Even after the 6th one comes.

I know several people who would fall in the living on assistance with too many kids category... heck that's what I do for a living is help provide that assstance.  We had a family with 6 already, the advocate took her to get an IUD put in and several months later she was talking about the possibility of being pregnant (wasn't but thought she was)... get the man snipped or something cause you aren't making it the way you are.

Other times circumstances happen... but in this octo case... I believe she's just nuts.  She's much more worried about her fame and fortune than the well-being of those children and we're only feeding the fire.

You are right about the Humane Society rejecting homes! My friend adopted a little girl, and you should have seen the mega-binder she had to compile about how great her family was and have all of these home-studies done.

I looked at it and was like: "You guys rock-climb and repair small engines as a hobby?" She was like: "No, we just took some pictures and wrote a summary. You really need to seem well-rounded to get a child."

That's too much. Some people have to qualify as parents, while others can hiccup wrong and get pregnant with their 5th or 6th kid. Too much.
