As my wife will most surely attest, I will watch anything on the small screen at least once. But if it fails to entertain, the program is history. Recently the Discovery Channels' fourth season of The Deadliest Catch about Alaskan crab fishing in the unforgivable Bearing Sea wrapped up. I missed season's one and two, but thanks to the magic of TiVo, I was able to "catch" the last two seasons.
The Deadliest Catch which premiered on the Discovery Channel in April 2005 and is currently seen in over 150 countries is a documentary-style series that follows the five month Alaskan King crab and Opilio crab fishing seasons which starts in October of every year arguably the most dangerous time of year in the world's northern hemisphere oceans and seas. The Bearing Sea is particularly perilous during the late fall and winter months and that is born out in The Deadliest Catch as the crab boats and their crew are constantly battered by waves, wind, snow and ice as they case crab along the land locked sea.
The Deadliest Catch films on eight to ten crab boats a season but four principle crab boats, The Wizard, Time Bandit, Northwestern, and the Cornelia Marie, have appeared season after season. The show highlights not only the serious and dangerous nature of crab fishing, but also the rivalries and family bonds of the men who captain and crew these boats.
It's hard to say why I watch; perhaps being a sailor I can relate to the fierce nature of the sea, but also its sheer beauty and draw; she is an unforgivable mistress, and yet she is not to be denied. Or it could be that The Deadliest Catch is truly well produced and entertaining. Whatever the reason I will make sure and watch season five of The Deadliest Catch.
