The SVP brand name is the first thing I should've considered before purchasing this Digital HDDV 2300. SVP has a notorious reputation of producing less then acceptable products. I wanted this camera because of what the description had listed "11 Mega Pixels Max" and it came with what they call a "flash". However, I call it a bright spotlight that blinds any living thing you point it at with little improvement in compensating for darker surroundings. (It's an LED flash/spotlight.)

The price on this at the time was approximately $80 which was a decent sale price. Considering the regular price was $159.00. I figured how can I go wrong when working with 11 Mega Pixels at such a great price, right? No. In fact that 11 Mega Pixels is what is called in the photography trade as interpolation.

Here is their explanation which they plant at the very bottom of their description page:

"12 Mega Pixel Interpolation is a method of constructing new data points within the range of a discrete set of known data points using the orignal PICture ELement thus pixels. By using advanced mathematics and computing algorithm, a 12 Mega Pixel Interpolated capture is therefore rendered into a high-quality photo approximately 4640x3480= over 16 million pixels in size. A 5 Mega Pixel photo has around 2592x1944= 5 million pixels. Pixel count may vary depending on the sensor aspect ratio in each camera design."  -SVP website

So, it actually is a 5 Mega Pixel camera which adds it's own selection of pixels to make the picture/video larger for tv output. Which as you can imagine turns out to be a pretty poor quality video viewing experience.

It can take digital still pictures which I find are not any better then my cellphone camera images. I do find if you can get just the perfect amount of lighting (not to much and not to little) it does have the ability to take a pretty decent shot...but so does my phone. I cannot photograph my parakeets because if they move their head (even slowly) it blurs.

When using the video camera, you also must have the "just right" amount of lighting as well. And if what you are filming moves beware of a lag effect. The frame per second rate is 30 creating a blur when an object such as a bird or a running child happens by. And yes, I am still speaking of the video quality but the still image quality is far worse when it comes to blurring.

The 4X digital zoom is useless. It destroys what little quality you already get.

So here I will sum it up:

I do not recommend this to anyone older then the age of 10. Very poor quality all around.
I have included a picture from outside on a cloudy day and the little color specs you see around my car are not really there. It is all just plain brown dirt. For the second one of my birds, there are three florecent lights to the right and two bright kitchen lights behind me as I took this picture.
