We have a Sears Cannister vacuum that has done a good job.  It is versitile and easy to use.  BUT it has some shortcomings that I deem rather serious.  First off, it does not have a tube to use for the bare floor attachment.  I know that for the last number of years you have been expected to take the tube from the power attachment for carpet to use for the floor attachment, but this is awkward and we saves the tube from an old vacuum so that we do not have to disasemble the power assembly to do a bare floor!  There is one negative to this.  It appears that the diameter of the tubes has changed...

This is a good vacuum, but it's not great.  The carpet cleaner undercarriage broke within 1 year and haven't been able to fix it.  The carpet portion of the vacuum works still, but not as well.  The suction is good, but the nozzle for suction control continues to slide, unless I hold it to maintain continuous "high" suction.  Vacuum bags are expensive.  However, with 2 cats and a dog it does the job on rugs, furniture and wood.  The Hepa filter is also a plus.
