Don't get me wrong, we love our 3 female Mini Rex and are not planning to give them up. However the longer we have them, the more we realize that they can be expensive and a lot of work. I think one alone would have been sufficient, but we got one for each of our three youngest.  From our experience they each have their own personality and can be very dominant. they are easy to litter box train, but constantly are chewing on items in the house. A play pen is a good idea unless you can supervise them. I would recommend only one at a time and make sure you can lavish time and attention that it takes to care for... I love it cause it gets the black marks off the walls and stairs that come with a house full of kids mainly teen boys! Artemus has his own unique personality, and is the best purchase that we have made from PetSmart. He is so easy to care for. We have learned that one advantage to having a Beta fish is that he can breath with out all the oxygen trappings that other fish seem to need and he only needs to be feed once a day. Our Beta fish has a playful personality and my youngest has had the best of times watching him. I would recommend a Beta fish as a first time pet for any child....
