provoshane says "Goomba must be Italian for "Great food, bad service"" about Goomba's Pizzeria - San Antonio, TX

Goomba's has excellent food at a reasonable price, there is no doubt of that, as it is always busy and has lots of repeat customers including me. That said, it is a testament to the quality of the food that it is so consistently good, while the service is so completely and consistently inept and bad.

They have excellent thin crust pizzas that are available by the slice if you wish, and outstanding lunch specials that feature large portions and moderate prices. Pasta dishes are excellent, as well.

Just don't count on every member of your party getting their meal at the same time, or even within up to 15 minutes of each other. If this is important, best to all order the same thing (still no guarantee, but safer) or stick to a whole pizza to share.

Another thrill-a-minute is the unending line of bimbettes that work the cash register. Long on looks, short on intelligence, customer service, telephone skills, and personality, the only thing less available to you is the manager/owner...
...

provoshane says "Don't let the name fool you, these folks can cook Italian!" about Miss Ellie's Pizza - San Antonio, TX

I went to Miss Ellie's after reading the Express-News critic's choice award for their Buffalo Wings. I have passed it by dozens of times because the name of the restaurant did not give me the warm fuzzies. What a mistake.

We did have the wings, which were superb, easily in my top 3 around the US, and I have eaten wings at over 100 different places in the U.S. They are marinated (which rarely happens) and the sauce is cooked into the meat, so while still messy, is not too slippery. Not too spicy, and not too mild for San Antonians.

The pizza was as good as you will find outside of the Nortiheast or Chicago, but is thin crust (not my favorite, but very good for thin crust). You can also buy it by the slice. The Garlic rolls and the calzone were outstanding, and the service is friendly and quick.

The ambience is nothing to write home about. Tables and chairs are simple and cheap, and decor is whatever was free or cheap to obtain. Wine and beer are on the menu.

Its tough to say...
...

provoshane says "Ordinary but ok for Canyon Lake" about Anchor's Landing - Canyon Lake, TX

I have eaten there twice, and it was ok, but nothing special. Of course, at the lake, your options are small, so it is about the best you will find unless you are willing to drive 45 minutes to San Antonio or Austin.

I would eat there again, and probably will, as it is pretty consistent, and very clean.

...

provoshane says "I would give up my car first!" about TiVo - Digital Video Recorder

The Tivo DVR is easily the best of the DVR's I have used. It is intuitive, simple to figure out, and dependable. I own two, and one Windows Media Center, and my first Tivo is over 10 years old and still running!

I highly recommend the lifetime subscription, which can be transferred to a new unit in many cases. The new versions have Internet capability and can show specially downloadable videos and games.

Tivo was the pioneer in DVR technology and it shows. Keep supporting them for new features and services!
...
