RRNewYork says "YELP promotes a horrific place with untruthful review to do biz" about Yelp.com

Yelp is a despicable place to review. I have rarely seen any biz accurately reviewed on yelp, and worse, I own one that has horrible reviews on yelp. The worse part about it - is no matter how many times I prove some of the horrible reviews are lies, yelp just doesn't care. One of the terrible reviews about my biz on yelp claims we are on the 4th floor. We are not. We are on the 1st. One of the negative reviews says we do not have a street viewing property. Another lie. Yelp is a place where ex-disgruntled employees can try and ruin their former employer also by writing false info to try to get consumers to do biz elsewhere. In our biz we are also able to collect medical info about our customers. So we know who is mentally unstable, on anti-depressants, suicidal, etc. Unfortunately there is no disclaimer for the medically ill to spew untruthful garbage on yelp. Of course not all do this - but the ones that do are unforgettable as they are the most damaging. This...
...

Queenbee75 says "This is better than Angie's List it's free w/o the annual fee" about Yelp.com

I came across Yelp when I was looking for a site that was better than Epinions and I saw that people are respectful of you on Yelp. It's gotten to the point that many review sites seem to gain an audience of immature adults many who are married or in relationships with children acting immature and trashing people's reviews even going as far as emailing them threatening messages and other ridiculous high school level behavior.

I ended up finding a really good washer and dryer repairman named Robert aka "The Fix It Guy" who is highly rated on Yelp for his professionalism and prompt service. If anyone's going to find a good repair man or service or business will find it all on Yelp because the users who are awesome are mature adults who are not on there clowning and trashing people's reviews as if they're entitled to do so. This place is way better than Angie's List which charges an annual fee to be a member when being a member of Yelp is 100% free and you can meet some really cool people...
...

mrkstvns says "May not be worthy of YOUR trust..." about Yelp.com

I used to like yelp, but I'm not sure I really place trust in their reviews anymore. They play games with their content (and not fun, good kinds of games). They allow companies being reviewed to comment on their reviews, denigrating the opinions of their customers, and they let companies pay to determine what order the reviews get listed.

Can anybody say "sleazy"??

Sure thing! I knew you could!

A review site that puts controls into the hands of the merchants is not to be trusted for impartiality. A review site that makes merchant comments more prominent than fair criticisms from legitimate clients should NOT be trusted.

I don't trust yelp anymore.

You shouldn't either.
...

I work for an online information site where people can text a question and receive and answer back from guides.
I rely on Yelp.com for most of my "what to do in (name of city)" and "what bars are located in (name of city)" type of questions.
I get a great list of anything available including addresses, phone numbers, type of dress, cost if any..etc. There are also link to the actual website of anything you're interested in.
Next time you're looking for something to do, or want to plan a trip itinerary, use Yelp.com!...

lemurs2 says "yelp removes legitimate reviews" about Yelp.com

I am a new business owner. We have been telling our clients to use yelp.com to post reviews on what they thought of our business. We had up to 12 reviews, all positive and now we are down to 6. I contacted yelp and they said they have an automated program that removes reviews that it feels are not legit, but we could still find the reviews by looking up the user. Well that is easier said then done because we didn't write down their user names because we didn't know that yelp would be taken away their reviews. Most people that post don not use their real names. Other businesses have complained to yelp and they have developed another "automated" response which is just another dead end.

For a new business, struggling in a bad economy, removing good reviews, really hurts. Thanks yelp.com
...

SFfoodie says "Fake Reviews, Fake People" about Yelp.com

Yelp started as an interesting concept, but was executed so poorly that it has become one of the internet's worst disasters. Yelp relies on small business owners for advertising revenue, but instead decided to focus solely on its community of reviewers (free food, free booze, all donated by the same small businesses yelp so desperately needs to survive). Yelp intentionally prevents small business owners or other reviewers from commenting on any review, and will only allow you to vote on them as funny, useful or cool. The master plan here is to take a mass of amateur reviewers and use their comments, no matter how inaccurate or malicous they may be, and force small business owners to pay for the ability to defend the business they worked so hard to build. Despite all the negative press surrounding Yelp and the accusations of extortion, many Yelpers have rallied around Yelp and are quick to dismiss the large volume of small business owners who report the same problems with Yelp. ......

As a paid advertiser, I find that the site lacks merrit. Quite the disappointment. When there is an issue my ad rep. Erica M. knows how to talk the script, but that is all she knows how to do. My contact is soon over with Yelp.com so to say that I am not renewing is a relief. Read between the lines of Yelp reviews. The company is not who it says it is....

Yelp.com is a website where you can read and write reviews on restaurants, shopping and other services in your own town like favorite salon, spa, dog groomer, etc. You also have the option of reviewing places/services in other cities.

One of the best features about Yelp.com is the reviews are true, informative and intelligent. You will not find reviews consisting of three words like "It is great", or "I like it". Nor will you find reviews that are direct quotes (or basically copied word for word) from the service/product website, as so many reviews are on Viewpoints.

So if you are a true writer and reader of reviews, I would higly recommend using Yelp.com for informative and complete reviews.
...

OldHippie says "No "Quickie" Reviews" about Yelp.com

Footnote added to the top: Another thing I noticed about Yelp.com, one must be logged on to give a thumbs up or down on a review. On Viewpoints...anyone (including the writer) can give a review the thumbs up or down; and it counts towards total "useful" votes. This is just plain wrong.

The first thing I noticed about Yelp.com is that it is localized. You write and read reviews from your part of the country and/or city. This gives it more home-town atmosphere. I'm guessing you can browse other cities. I'm still new to it.

The second thing I noticed about Yelp.com; I saw NO QUICK REVIEWS! Good! No "I Like It" or ""It's Cool" only reviews. No "soundbites" only. Half the time on Viewpoints I can't tell what the person is supposedly reviewing because there is no review! No photo of the product - no description of the product - nothing. Sad. Those that want to truly read & write serious reviews should check out Yelp.com.

On the downside, is the inabilty to add photos...
...

Yelp is a local review site that I currently whenever I visit a new place. If you are looking for a place to hangout while you are traveling, Yelp is definitely must visit. It provides you reviews for restaurants, night life, and local shopping.

As a participant on Yelp, I frequently write and read other people's review. Although everyone's taste is different, Yelp users are among the best I have seen. The user reviews tend to be very honest and very helpful. This is definitely a website worth visiting!
...

Yelp.com is probably my favorite website (after my own of course), because it allows me to look up any restaurant or store or anything locally and find out what REAL people have to say about things. The only downfall is when restaurant owners review their own places positively, and you can usually spot these people pretty easily. But the community is alive, thriving, and definitely is the right place if you're looking for people to go eat with or to see a movie with or to date. It's a stellar website, darn't.

The reviews are quirky, creative, and you can tell these people really put their heart and souls into the reviews!!
...
