AngiBowman says "Watch Your Time and Boredom Disappear in the Sea of Questions" about Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo! Answers is like a bad reality TV show. You know it's just a waste of your time, but you can't help yourself. From answering questions to asking your own questions, you can find everything from humor, stupidity and a little bit of seriousness.

What is It?

It's the Ask Jeeves of today. Everything is based on points - answer a question and get 2 points. Ask a question and lose 5 points. Have a best answer and get 10 more points! The possibilities are endless. There are categories for everyone - including pregnant, parenting, health, diet & fitness, ethics, law, etc.

How it Works

To ask a qusetion, you write down a topic (i.e. What vitamins can be deadly if overdosed?) and type more information if necessary (i.e. I'm currently taking D-3, C and B12 vitamins with Echinacea and Fish Oil. What would happen to me if I overdosed on any of these supplements?). Next you review you question for clarity or spelling (optional to some members) and select a category. Although they have automatic...
...

mtpelion says "Ideological censorship runs amok" about Yahoo! Answers

As a former Level 7 Y!A user, I know how valuable it can be as a resource. My caution is that if you are looking for any answer that could have a political or ideological difference you will not find answers on both sides of the issue as Yahoo! takes great lengths to censor anyone who disagrees with their views and thus it is not a free forum.

As long as your searches are fairly mundane (i.e. things that you could easily look up on Wikipedia instead of waiting for someone to answer it an Y!A) you shouldn't have a problem.

Also, if you are a moderate to conservative person who wants to keep their account, do not post anything in any political or religious section or your account will be suspended. If your beliefs trend towards socialism, you can get away with posting anything since the censors at Yahoo! agree with you.
...

CyndiA says "Don't just scratch your head. Toss out questions at Yahoo. " about Yahoo! Answers

If you have a question, you will almost surely get an answer at Yahoo Answers. That's linked off the main Yahoo page - easy to find.

To ask or answer questions, you need to sign up. That's easy. Just be sure to remember your sign in data. You can set it for 2 weeks or so, but you have to put it back in from time to time.

The site is divided into categories like law, health, food, recreation and so on. Then, the categories are further divided. When you're asking a question, you are prompted to select a category, and those tend to be spot on based on the question.

On the flip side, you can log in and respond to questions. You earn points for answering and lose some for asking questions with a limit of questions per day. I don't know of any benefit to the points other than the ego part.

The questions roll in fast, so responses are usually quick. So, if you are cooking a dish and want to know if you can substitute an item, this is a quick way to find out. In other cases, you may have a question...
...

I have been a member of Y! Answers for almost a year not. I've got the Top Contributer caption under Law and Ethics. This site is absolutely fantastic. If I can't find an answer to any kind of question, I run it through Answers. Chances are someone else has asked the same and I can read everyone's responses. Even doing a google search- you'll pull up Y! Answers. Simply go to the topic your question is under and type in a sentance for a title. You can write in your problem or ask for some kind of information. The site covers everything from money, dating, legal advice, immigration, voting, pets, jokes, etc. There are a lot of good posters who will reply to questions. In "law and ethcis" there are a few regulars who along with me, give advice. There are even policemen who answer questions under "law enforcement." Believe it or not, there are a lot of cop haters out there! You'll get some weird or ignorant answers but you'll also get good advice which can help you out. ......

jillwv says "Good community if you don't mind some snide comments" about Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo Answers is a very large community where users can go to ask questions or to answer other people's questions. The majority of people on Answers are friendly and helpful, but occassionally you will get rude comments or down right profane answers. And although you can report inappropriate answers and questions it often takes a long time of the administrators/moderators to remove them and/or reprimand the trouble-maker.

But overall you can get good, quick answers to your questions on anything: cooking, pregnancy, computers, kids, animals, etc.
...

ntwrkguru says "Yahoo! Answers is very addictive!" about Yahoo! Answers

I normally would only review tangible goods, but I find Yahoo! Answers so entertaining and addictive that I had to review it. :-)

For those that may not know, Yahoo! Answers is one part of Yahoo's push into the Web2.0 arena and offers a place where any Yahoo user can ask any question. In return any Yahoo user can offer up answers to that question. The asker can choose a best answer or in the absence of the asker choosing a best answer, the community can vote on a best answer. The whole system works on a points system where you are charged points to ask a question, and awarded points for answering. At first this seems silly, and in fact many questions that you will find are, but the premise behind user generated content provides entertainment and information, as well as the ability to genuinely contribute to the online community.

Normally, the silly or frivolous questions would be annyoing, but I find them to be humorous and entertaining. However, the biggest draw for me is the ability......
