We purchase a Whirlpool Duet front loading washer thinking it would be a step up from our current washing machine. I has been a very bad choice. It leaks from the front constantly. The inside rim has black mildew/mold that will NOT go away with the suggested bleach cycle. We purchased it a Lowes and it has been a huge disappointment.

go4it says "Duet washer- look elsewhere!" about Whirlpool Duet - Washer Dryer

We have had this machine for about 6 years. It has had many service calls including 2 in the first year. Now it need a new drain pump which one person said cost her $500 to repair. The cost of the pump(part only $142) is about 3X the cost of an average pump for a washer. We are not hard on appliances--all our others are 10+ years old.In talking to appliance repair companies they said that these machines are a problem and they have not found a customer that likes them yet.(Of course, those customers are calling for repairs.) It was an expensive machine and continues to cost us money.

I have not found that it cleans the clothes all that great. White socks are hard to get clean and I have noticed that smells do not always wash out of the clothes . I always appreciate reading reviews from those who have had a longer experience with the product after the honeymoon is over. I say forget the Duet and take your search elsewhere.
...

It's hard to believe everyone is talking about the same washer and dryer. My problems with this pair are completely different. My old large capacity Whirlpool washer and dryer held more clothes, washed a load in 30 minutes, extra 5 for extra rinse. This washer takes 1 1/2 hours for one load with extra rinse! The "finished" alarm goes off anytime during the cycle for a full minute, but not when it's actually finished. If you try to stop the alarm during this point in the cycle, the whole cycle starts all over again for another hour and a half. Then the clothes come out in a knot altogether after I had carefully put in one item at a time after shaking it out. It took my husband and me to unknot 6 shirts with sleeves all twisted together.

The dryer takes so much longer also. Instead of running awhile to determine how long the load will take to dry, it determines the length of the cycle immediately even though it is supposed to sense when it is dry. It decided just 12...
...

We've had many problems with these Whirlpool Duet units in the first year. 5-6 service calls and the washer is still inoperable. Whirlpool doesn't have the parts!!! Temporarily doing our wash on mother's 30 year old GE Washer. We are trading in for Samsung which is a much more reliable unit.
...

We jus got our duet sport washer and dryer and we love it we turned it on to do a test and it is so quiet. We love it I have nothing bad to say because lowes did a great job in hooking us up with a better quality washer and dryer. We thought we were going to get a cheaper kind but instead sent us the high end one. Love you lowes! Make sure you get warranty just to be safe worth the extra money!
...

I will admit that I fell in love with the "look" of the Whirlpool Duet. I loved that we would use less water and still get "clean" clothes.

Right up front. Forget the clean clothes on a regular wash cycle! You MUST use heavy duty or extended wash times, which negate the small water usage. We have a normal family of 6 which includes a 7 year old boy that plays soccer and climbs trees regularly.

We bought the platinum color washer and dryer about a year and a half ago. Within 6 months I made my first service call because the electronic display indicated a problem code. Within a 12 month period I had to have service repairmen out on 5 different calls. I endure waiting weeks for parts that were not in stock. I finally called Whirlpool Corp. about 14 months into my ownership. There was "nothing they could do since my warranty only covered 1 year". They repaired the next 2 services free of charge. (Gee...thanks Whirlpool). Tonight,(10/24/09) I went to the laundry...
...

whirlpool duet sport is the worst washing machine ive ever owned... Ive had several service calls,"literally" in 3 yrs.1500.00 overhaull this may 2009 broke again in october... it was broke 1 week after purchase. would not let me return it. It has been repaired numerious times while under warranty .this is a piece of junk now looking at another 360.00 repair. and the best whirlpool will do is give me fifteen percent off on a new machine. what a great incentive to get another piece of junk. fifteen percent off another piece of junk doesn't even come close to covering the service bills over the last 3 yrs.on the first piece junk. what a joke but thats the best youll get, another piece of MADE IN MEXICO crap. screw me once shame on you, screw me twice with a 15 percent incentive shame on me!!
...

About 6 months ago my washer stopped working after 14 years. So off shopping I went. Now came the decision, do I go with the "new" fab of the front loaders or do I stay with the old faithful top loaders. The front loaders where extremely expendsive, but they are really nice looking.

So after a week of going from Lowes to Best Buy Home Depot, Sears and any one else that carried washers I decided on the Whirlpool Duet sport washer and dryer. That was the best decision I could have made.

I love my washer and dryer. I especiallly like the varity of washing cycles. The whites cleans whites like nothing I have ever owned before, (and I did own whirlpools) It even has a machine clean cycle, which I run once a month or after doing some of the grandkids clothes (muddy). No more bending over and trying to reach all the hiding spots for clumps of mud.

Not only are they energy savers thea also save on laudry soap. It took me a couple of weeks to get use to how much less...
...

I loved my washer. It was big enough to do all of our laundry in just one day and we are a family of five. It worked great until a year later when it just stopped working. It kept giving me this Error code that was not even in the book and it would stop. I was soooo upset. Can you imagine bringing all the clothes I had to a friends house to wash. Then finally we found someone who could check it out and all it was, was a stupid sensor. Cost us $150 dollars for the man to take the top off and change the sensor. I think that's CRAZY!. Why couldn't that code be in the book. Then I would've known it was the senosr and we could've changed it. I should've stayed with my other washer that I had for 8 years and never had a problem with it.
...

Was visiting one of our college kids who asked for a bit of help with her laundry. We used two Whirlpool Duet washers and were able to do a month's worth of laundry, divided into five different loads, and everything looked great! I loved the ability to control the spin speed and it worked great on the heavy towels and jeans. The delicate cycle was very gentle and not one item was stretched or damaged. The normal cycle was visibly different from the others and got everything clean. I was surprised how much fit into the drum. The countdown timer was a great aid for time management and I knew exactly when to come back. You do have to be careful to use the High Efficiency soap and it does feel like these machines take longer to do a load. ON the other hand, it was well worth the results. I was even comfortable doing a load of sweaters in the machine, something I never do in my machine. I can say that this is definitely my top choice for my next machine!
...

Thanks to misslee76 advice on this forum, we saved so much repair money! We love our Whirlpool Duel Washer but recently have had trouble with error code F2 and Suds, then looking online for solutions did we find this website. Yeah....we opened our drain filter behind the bottom kick plate and what we found was gross. Sock, pens, change, and ick! If we didn't have the advice of misslee76 it would have cost us more than the handful of change that we recovered from our filter. Thanks again...I still love our washer.
...
