pcm says "Class action suit against Whirlpool for mold and mildew w/ Duets" about Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer Machines

Whirlpool Duet, Duet Sport and Duet HT front loaders all have a terrible mold and mildew smell during the wash that consumers have brought a class action suit against the company. I thought I was going crazy and it was my septic.I have had to throw out towels because the dishcloth or dish towel would smell coming out of the dryer! I couldn't understand it. I thought it was the kind of towel (microfiber ones). I had the technician come out and he said it was from my 2x concentrate detergent but my washer was fine. The clothes do not clean well and I would never buy Whirlpool again because my dishwasher also does not do a good job cleaning my dishes. I use to love Whirlpool products 15 years ago but after having this washer for only 3 years, I will never buy any Whirlpool item again. Since I just found out about the class action suit and what other consumers have gone through, I now have to go buy another machine because I can not expose my family to mold and mildew on their clothes....
...

jkellogg says "whirlpool duet washer and dryer have been nothing but trouble" about Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer Machines

We bought the Whirlpool duet clothes washer and dryer a few years ago; we were excited about the energy savings, greater capacity, and use of less water than top loading washers like our old washer was. In the last few years, the washer handle has broken; the latch that closes the washer door broke; the washer drum got stuck; the dryer caught fire because of lint that was collecting inside the base of the dryer, the internal computer had to be replaced, and washer drainage stopped working. We called Whirlpool's cutomer service for all these problems, and after a long wait, they told us that none of these problems were covered by the warranty; they wre not at all polite. We have spend about $600 on service calls since we bought the duet set; the same repairperson has been out a number of times, and he told us that the duets all seem to have similiar problems. We wish we had kept our old kenmore washer and dryer.
...

I have owned the Whirlpool Duet Washer and Dryer for a few years and I must say I am not a happy owner.

The wash cycle is so long and slow, it takes me hours to wash sheets for 4 bedrooms in my house. The water heat temperatures don't seem to work, when I've needed cold for delicates or hot for towels

The dryer doesn't seem to tumble the clothes, they seem to stay in the same place, so they don't dry evenly. Heaven forbid you have a small load, the clothes come out like a wrinkled mess. Towels take a long time and they never smell fresh and clean. I have 3 sons and a husband who wear white t-shirts, they are all streaked with terrible smears of a brown substance from my dryer. It is so upsetting. I cringe every time I pull something white out of the dryer.

They are large, but that is just not enough!

I don't think I will buy Whirlpool in the future.

We purchased the Whirlpool washer and dryer when we moved into our house about four years ago. We had never owned a Whirlpool appliance in the past but had heard good things about it, so we decided to give it a try.

These machines have been great! They do a great job in washing the clothes and the dryer automatically senses if the clothes are dry. The wrinkle shield option is great, especially if you tend to forget about a load that you put in earlier in the day. We have kids that play hockey so the washer is constantly going with stinky jerseys and gear and have never had a problem with anything being damaged or looking like it has been washed too much.

We recently needed to make more room in our laundry room and decided to stack the units. They were easy to put together and it really freed up a lot of space. We love the idea and it looks great too!

After 4 years we have not had any problems with either one of our machines and would highly recommend them to anyone looking...
...

We purchased the Whirlpool Duet Sport front loading washer and dryer set about a year ago. Overall I would say it does a pretty good job, but there have been more times than I can count where I have put items in - jeans, a rug, etc. and at the end of the cycle everything is still soaking wet. I will try running them on the Drain/Spin cycle multiple times but they still are wet and I either have to put them on the deck to drip dry or put them in the dryer for hours which certainly defeats any money saving benefit. I've tried reading the manual to figure out what to do about this but it was less than helpful. Most cycles are preprogrammed so you can not manually override and tell it what you need. I would get rid of this set in a heart beat but can't afford to purchase another new set.
...

Our last washer and dryer needed repairs. In fact, our repairman told us that we bought the only Maytag that had problems. So after much research, we purchased the Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer Machines. The washer cleans everything from wools to hand washables to whites and makes everything sparkle. The dryer finishes before the Normal wash cycle is done. The energy efficiency save us money. Well worth the cost and savings in time, energy, and detergent.
...

I love my Whirlpool Duets I have had them for three years now and no problems. They are great. I recommend getting the storage drawers for under them too great for storing all sorts of stuff and lift the machines up so you don't have to bend down at all. Love the water saving and the laundry soap savings....

I've been using the Whirpool Duet for 3 1/2 years now - i have a 1st floor laundry room & the washer makes so much noise, it sounds like a helicopter is landing. My husband has tried leveling it many times now. We have to turn up the volume on the tv & I can't do laundry when people are still sleeping because it would wake them up. The model we bought does not have the sanitizing feature, but towels, in particular, do not get clean unless I add bleach. I wash them on the heavy duty cycle & if I didn't put bleach in - they would have a funky smell in them. The only good feature is that since it doesn't have the fins in the tub, sweaters, etc. look better & do not get the balled effect. Overall, I am not pleased & am sorry I didn't buy the old reliable top loader.
...

Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer, yes are a Green living's heaven, with the low water usage, low electrity usage, and low laundry detredent usage, BUT I would NOT recommend this product to any of my friends. Yes there are MANY positives to these wonderful Whirlpool washing machine and dryer set and yes I am happy for the price that we paid, but again if they are not balanced correctly it thows everything off and it rattles and tumbles all over (ours are in stackable mode). Not to mention if you throw your comforter in it throws the Whirlpool washer off balance and then you have to call a repair man to come and tighten the ring. Which can get costly so we no longer wash the comforters we take them to the laundrymat. Another negative is that when in stackable mode you are consistanly bending over pulling heavy loads out and tossing in if you are short as me above your head. Not very practible. Overall this is a good product I have NO complaints as to the cleaning of our clothers,......

I really wish I had ahd these Whirlpool Duets units when I was raising my kids. I spent leterally hours every week trying to get my son's white football pants clean. If I had had my Duets then I could have spent more time watching him practice football.

Whe my daughter was in high school I had more dry cleaning trying to keep her sweaters and dresses in shape. If I had had my Whirlpool Duet then I could have saved enough money to have bought her more of the clothes that she wanted.

Last when my kids were little I washed diapers, and I hung them out in the sunshine trying to sanitize them as much as possible, not to mention trying to keep them white. Now that I have my Whirpool Duet I have whiter whites now that I have ever had. Not to mention when my kids were little it might have helped to save on the wear and tear of their clothes, even if they were hard on the knees.
...

I've had several different brands of washing machines and dryers over the years none even comes close to my Whirlpool Duet set. I finally found a washer and dryer thata can handle king size comfortors and large loads of greasy work clothes.

I've had my set for almost two years and the only problem that I've ever had was accidently locking the controls when I first got it. My fault, lol. I guess it really does pay to read ALL the instructions before you use it. It has a child safety feature in case your little ones are tempted to play with the buttons.

Beside the large capacity, I like the way I can remove the soap dispensing drawer to clean it, yes a neat freak, I clean the outside with a appliance cleaner too. Stop laughing.

It has a large variety of settings and timers which comes in handy.

Got such a great deal on the Machine through Sears specials paying less than $600(including the extended warrenty) we could not pass it up and with the no interest for a year agreement it ends up costing less, after-all than the gas of driving to the laundry matt and plugging the machines.

We purchased the machine in May of 2008 and have had no regrets.

The clothing is coming out clean, even my husband's grungy factory work duds. The water usage is minimal and the noise factor is not bad at all - even when using the high spin. We have cement floors and have not yet purchased the pedestal.

The clothing is damp when the cycle is done so electricity is saved on dryer time as well. I usually just hang the clothing to dry.

The gasket serves as an effective lint and small items trap (pocket change that did not get emptied etc)

We are still using the same container of detergent that we purchased back in May, which makes the higher price of detergent a bit easier to excuse. ...
...

You can also get so much more in the front loaders, then the traditional ones. All of the options on the machines are great. I had a load of tee shirts in the dryer, used the wrinkle guard setting came back 20 minutes after they were through and no wrinkles....
