Where the Wild Things Are was one of my favorite stories as a child and I still love to pick it up and read it. Max is a "little monster" who was being bad so his mother sent him to his room. He wears a monster costume through out the book and fits with the theme. A jungle grows out of his imagination and out of his closet at the same time. The monsters are great because they're big and cuddly and not scary at all.

Where the Wild Things Are is a great example of kids using their imaginations. The book itself is very short, yet the pictures are just amazing and so full of detail and color and unlike other childrens books. A great book to have around the house.
...

I remember this one as a kid and was always amazed by it. Certainly one to introduce to my daughter!

As background Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is a children's picture book originally published by Harper & Row. The book is about the imaginary adventures of a young boy named Max, who is punished for "making mischief" by being sent to his room without supper. Max wears a distinctive wolf suit during his adventures and encounters various mythical creatures, the wild things. Although just ten sentences long, the book is generally regarded as a classic of American illustrated children's literature.
Written in 1963, it was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1964. [1] It also won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and was an ALA Notable Book.
...

When I was a child, I read so much, I could finish a 250 page book in one day. (Maybe that's why my eyesight is so bad now). This book was wonderful. It was funny, the pictures were bright and well done. I remember pretending to be the little boy. I totally could relate to how he felt. I often wanted to get away from everyone. I will always hold this book close to my heart....

Maurice Sendak's offering of equisite illustration and simple yet poignant story telling is one of the greatest classics geared towards young children. Where The Wild Things utilizes repetitive wording, encourages the young reader to attempt to read along;still the vibrant and detailed artwork holds the adults' attention read after read. The moral message of the story is a wonderful gateway to child/parent discussion even in the earliest years. Every bookshelf should have a copy of Where The Wild Things Are tucked amongst the masters....
